Your Questions About Reading Food Labels For Kids

Robert asks…

Ideas for snacks for kids with egg/milk allergies?

So I work at a daycare, and there is one boy in my room who’s allergic to eggs, and possibly milk. It’s nothing serious, it just aggravates his eczema. He’s a very picky eater, and his mother isn’t much help; she just tells us to read the labels. Well, there are 12 kids, 2-3 years old, and only 2 teachers in the room, so we don’t even think about reading labels. (We’ve talked to our director about this, and she told us not to worry too much about it, that the mother should have given us a list of aprpoved foods). So, what are some snacks that will work for every kid, that I can just hand out without worrying about allergies. Fruits are a no-brainer, but I’m having a problem finding healthy snacks 2-3 year olds will eat. We’ve learned that pudding, marshmallows, and even some granola and cereal bars contain egg products, who knew? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much for your help!!

Ants on a log! Well its not really that what it is, is celery cut into like three bite pieces with peanut butter in the middle. Then what you do is allow the child to put raisins on them and pretend they are ants. Its actually a really fun thing to do with the kids and the normally have fun eating the pretend bugs. Its also very healthy for the kids and tastes very good.

what is the most heart healthy gluten free/Casin free food plan out there?

I’ve been changing my diet back and forth for about 2 years now. sometimes good and sometimes bad. I need to find out a decent mixture of food thats both heart healthy and gluten free. I’ve talked with my doctor about this and he says to read the nutrition labels and look online. I’ve been reading the labels, I know exactly how much cholesterol I’m intaking as well as any number of other things. but I need to know whats actually good for me and my heart.

My sudden interest is due to the fact that I’ve had heart issues in the past and I’ve taken it in stride and always just followed what the doc said. but now I have a kid coming along and I want to actually be able to get myself in shape within the next 8 months and the first step to that is a heart healthy diet. or so I’ve heard.

Sadly, the list of “Gluten Free Foods” is about 30 Pages Long. I have been allergic to Gluten for 5 years now, and it is NOT Easy, and NOT Fun. I MISS all that “Real people food”. So I wish you MUCH Luck. Here is the list: http://gfkitchen.server101.com/FoodstoAvoid1.htm
As far as your heart is concerned the best foods to eat are Blueberries, Salmon, Blackberries, Raspberries, Olive Oil, Cod Fish, Flax Seed, Artichokes, Beans, Cabbage, Carrots, Cherries, etc.
The first answer is wrong. I DO Eat cereal, and it is made from “Brown Rice”, or Tapioca. There are Lots of cereals you can eat, and if you can eat dairy you are even luckier, because I have to drink soy milk. As far as the bread is concerned there is also gluten free bread out there. You need to go to a specialty store however.

What’s your kid going to eat the next school day ?

ever heard of ..”you are what you eat” ? have you taught them the single most important issue in their life ?…to choose the right foods and not what the T.V. or other kids get for lunch ? remember…mortal existance depends on it !!!!!!!! as far as I’m concerned ..whoever is in charge of filling vending machines with junk food should be tried for attempted murder…read the labels !!!

If there was a video tape showing how to gain muscle and proving you were able to, would you buy it?

It would show you how to lift, what muscle exercises to train, when to eat, what to eat, how to shop for foods, reading nutrition labels, working out (reps sets and rest periods), calorie intake, sleep, and water. And it would be ending in a bodybuilding show, like a skinny kid getting big in 4 months showing you how to do it, and the end result is competing in a show…….would you buy it? Do you think others would? What else would you recommend in th video about building muscle…….

admin answers:

I would show also someone who is over-weight…and how they are able to turn their flab into muscle.

Like me, I have flab around my mid-section (as most men do) that I just cannot seem to get rid of. I am 5’10″ and went from 260lbs to 180lbs…but cannot seem to get rid of my mid-section.

So helping me out in that capacity would be beneficial

Good luck

cleaning ?

i was trying to find a product that is safe during pregnancy,so i was reading all the labels in the store today, and i picked up something that says its safe to use around kids, food and pets, and it also said there are no harsh fumes, does this make it safe for pregnancy as well?

admin answers:

You can use any cleaners while pregnant. I read up on it when I first found out I was pregnant (not that I was trying to get out of anything) ;)
My doctor said the same thing, as long as you’re using cleaning supplies in a well ventilated area (which you always should do), you’re fine.
