Mandy asks…
what are range levels for cholesterol? if doctors told you your level was 7 is that bad?
was wondering if it is a range of 1 through 10, my friend went to doctors and was told he was 7, is that on dangerous side?
admin answers:
In the UK, the average total cholesterol level is 5.7mmol/l.
The levels of total cholesterol fall into the following categories:
ideal level: cholesterol level in the blood less than 5mmol/l.
Mildly high cholesterol level: between 5 to 6.4mmol/l.
Moderately high cholesterol level: between 6.5 to 7.8mmol/l.
Very high cholesterol level: above 7.8mmol/l.

Maria asks…
How cool is this..new cholesterol count within normal range?
5 years ago I had a really bad cholesterol rating,and very high triglyceride count,today I got my new results back and both are within the normal range.
Although this is great news,I’ve done nothing different in the last 5 years eg….change diet,give up smoking,exercise more etc.I’ve pretty much carried on as normal,why do you think my count has dropped to a normal range?
admin answers:
Anyone who is aware that cholesterol is high automatically changes diet a bit.

Michael asks…
Is my low HDL cholesterol a bad thing?
I’m a vegan. L=low ()=normal range
Cholesterol: 121 L (136-200)
Triglycerides: 118 (<150)
HDL cholesterol(good cholesterol) 33 L (>=40)
LDL cholesterol(bad cholesterol) 64 (<100)
admin answers:
Yes you are at increased risk of coronary artery disease, particularly if you suffer from diabetes or high blood pressure. (Goldbourt et al., Isolated Low HDL Cholesterol As a Risk Factor for Coronary Heart Disease Mortality-A 21-Year Follow-up of 8000 Men. Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology. 1997;17:107-113. Http://atvb.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/atvbaha;17/1/107 )
You can increase your HDL by including soy products (Sanders et al., Moderate intakes of intact soy protein rich in isoflavones compared with ethanol-extracted soy protein increase HDL but do not influence transforming growth factor ß1 concentrations and hemostatic risk factors for coronary heart disease in healthy subjects. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol. 76, No. 2, 373-377, August 2002. Http://www.ajcn.org/content/76/2/373.short ) and coconut oil (Katcher et al., Lifestyle Approaches and Dietary Strategies to Lower LDL-Cholesterol and Triglycerides and Raise HDL-Cholesterol. Endocrinology &Metabolism Clinics of North America Volume 38, Issue 1, March 2009, Pages 45-78. EDIT: ignore daisy’s lies. You can get cholesterol from plant foods such as coconut oil, although it is in considerably lower doses.

George asks…
when total cholesterol, good and bad chol are all within range can triglycerides be 140?
admin answers:
Hi,
A general rule of thumb for most patients to figure out your cholesterol is…
Total Chol = LDL + HDL + (TG/5)
so… If LDL =120
HDL = 40
TG =140
total chol = 188
So, yes, it can happen. Just so you know, TG =140 isn’t a bad reading.
Also, even though guidelines say that you do not need to fast for a cholesterol test…trigylcerides can be affected by what you eat before you get the test.
Take care.

I am a 52 yr old male and I had a cholesterol level of 190. Is that ok?
My good cholesterol was in the average range but my bad cholesterol was over the acceptable range by about 30 points. Is this ok? Also the test did not need for me to fast first, is this standard procedure?
