admin answers:

Possible but before you throw it out you should know that when you don’t eat on schedule, your liver releases glycogen for energy and burns that . Thus your blood Sugar can go up even when you haven’t eaten a meal.

Ruth asks…

Tummy pain after colonoscopy/endoscopy. 15 ): help ?

Hi,
So yesterday (wednesday) I got an endoscopy/colonoscopy (was given general anesthesia). Well, at first after waking up (was in recovery for 1.5 hours) I felt great and wanted to just to home but then in the car I started feeling really nauseous and in pain. In the hospital I ate a little bit of a Popsicle but not much at all. Well the first few times I went to the bathroom I had blood (I still now have miralax in me and everything I’ve tried to eat comes right out) and so the pain is still there and hurts a lot. When I walk I’m a bit shaky but okay. Yesterday though I felt like I was going to pass out so I went and sat down and drank some juice to spike my blood sugar and was okay (I’ve passed out twice in the past year-one at Cortisone shot and one getting bloodwork so I know what it feels like before hand)
Well what should I do?
15, female.
Thanks!

admin answers:

Other than passing blood, the nausea, bloating and cramping are know effects of consuming Miralax or other polyethylene glycol (PEG3350) based laxatives. When used as a prep it can take several days to clear the system. It is not normal to pass blood unless the doctor failed to verify the bleeding was stopped after removing a polyp or the doctor accidentally caused some bleeding.

I am always awake for my colonoscopy and I can say for fact my doctor doesn’t leave the area where she takes a sample until she sees that any bleeding is stopped. I have never passed blood after a colonoscopy and I have been through this 5 times and always had polyps removed. Also, I have never experienced the effects of PEG3350 because I always insist on a different bowel prep.

Call your doctor as passing blood does not sound normal..

Mary asks…

I have severe burning on the skin of my legs. Please read below.?

Someone mentioned it could be from blood sugar. I do get sugar spikes about 1/2hr after eating, but normal fasting sugar (little above 100).
The odd thing is, the burning doesn’t stay that way, it turns on and off at different times. It seems to come from using my legs or when the skin stretches when I use my legs.
I also get burning on my feet sometimes too, just from my shoe rubbing. If I walk with no shoes on, I get the pins and needles feeling.
Any ideas?
Thanks

admin answers:

Perhaps PVD or PAD….i know my mothers legs burn and hurt when she walks or is on her feet at all….but her PVD is really bad….don’t know if this helps. Certainly couldn’t hurt to mention it to your doctor.

PVD- Peripheral Vascular Disease
PAD-Peripheral Artery Disease

Ken asks…

Will my boyfriend ever grow up?

My boyfriend and I have been together almost two years. When we first met, he was 17 and I was barely 18, so we were both pretty immature. Over the last two years, though, I feel like I’ve progressed and he’s stayed the same, or maybe even gotten worse. The way he acts has irritated me for a while, but it never really was too big of an issue. We moved in together (some other roommates live with us too) in December, and everything is coming to light.

He is 19 now, and still refuses to take responsibility for himself. Everything that happens to him is someone else’s fault. One recent example: He is an insulin dependent diabetic. He rarely checks his blood sugar and takes his insulin when he “feels he needs it”. He does not keep back up insulin at our house, instead he keeps it at his grandmothers house. So two weeks ago he ran out of insulin. At 10 am he took the last 30 units from the vial. He had work at six. Instead of choosing to go get some more insulin, he sat around and played video games all day until the very last minute when he had to leave. After being at work for no more than 30 minutes, and drinking 3 cups of cherry coke, his blood sugar spiked over 650. He asked for a break, and the manager said he could have five minutes to call someone to bring insulin, but that he really needed him to work because it was busy. So my boyfriend goes to the break room and sits down for about 15 minutes. A manager comes and finds him and tells him he has to get back to work, and he is appalled by this and walks out and quits. Now, to me, if I had to place blame, I think it’s obviously his fault for either not having extra insulin here or not going to get some. But to him, the manager is just an a**hole and it’s completely their fault he had to quit and he thinks there is nothing he could’ve done different to make the situation work out differently.

His dad pays for his gas and car insurance. When he’s out of gas and can’t get in touch with his dad, he freaks out. I often ask him why he can’t put gas in his own car, even a gallon or two until he can get with his dad, and he just looks at me like I’m stupid. When we first moved in, his dad loaned him money to pay the first month’s rent. Instead of paying rent with it, my boyfriend blew through the money and spent it on whatever the hell he wanted. He went back to his dad to ask for more, and instead of being told no, his dad handed it over without even a slap on the wrist, then told him not to worry about paying any of it back. Our bills were due the 25th. When we got them, I went ahead and paid them in full because I was able to, then told the other roommates what their portion was. The others all paid me within 24 hours. He still says he doesn’t have the money to pay me; however, he DOES have money to eat out every single night. Now that he’s quit his job, instead of searching for a new one, he lays around on his butt all day. To his credit, he is in college and goes to classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. But, he doesn’t keep up with his reading or his assignments, then when he doesn’t do well he blames it on the teacher for not knowing what they’re doing. He also will not help around the house. There are piles of trash everywhere where he just throws his trash down and keeps doing what he’s doing. If I ask him to help me clean up, he says he will, but he never does. Monday night, around 5 pm, I asked him if he could unload the dishwasher before his class the next morning. He said he could, however it’s still sitting there, waiting to be unloaded. I remind him in a polite, non-nagging way every day and he apologizes and says he’ll do it…but he doesn’t.

If I say anything about any of this, he turns into a five year old and has a big hissy fit, saying things like “No one appreciates what I do!” “I work so hard and no one sees that, they only see when I mess up!” “I don’t know what else I can do for you, I’m clearly doing all I can.”

He is also 100% a freeloader. Everywhere, everytime. If you say no to him, he has a fit. I, myself, am barely making ends meet between my job, school, and paying the bills, but I AM making it. If we go somewhere, usually when it’s food, he always asks me to get him something, usually he wants to spend 10 or 15 dollars. He has more than enough money himself, because his dad keeps handing it over for no reason. If I tell him I’m not able to get him anything it is a huge deal, and I’m a terrible person. But if I ask him to buy me something, or even to loan me the money until we get back home because I forgot my purse, the answer is haha no every time.

This is all very frustrating for me. We were raised completely different ways, and it confuses me to watch him do the things he does, or to see his parents just give him things for no reason, generally when he’s actually done somethi

Joseph asks…

Anyone fail 1hr. Glucose Challenge Test…?

and then pass the 3hr? (For gestational diabetes)

I failed the first one, but I also didn’t fast for it like the lab says to because my Dr. told me not to.
Now I have to go in for the 3hr. one (which sucks) and I’m concerned I’m going to fail, even tho I know I don’t have gestational diabetes because I’ve been monitoring my blood glucose with a meter at home for the last 2 days and its been completely normal.
The thing is, I read somewhere that low-carb diets can affect the test. Well I’m on a low-carb diet but they never asked me that when they did the test. And if my body isn’t used to taking in that much sugar (becauase I rarely eat sweets, don’t eat pasta, potatoes, corn, or peas, and if I have bread or rice its low carb, high fiber bread or brown rice) my blood sugar would spike a lot more dramatically frpm drinking straight glucose.

I don’t see my Dr. until after the test so should I just wait till I get the results from her and then if they’re high tell her about my diet and show her the journal I’ve been keeping on my home blood sugar monitoring? (And if they’re not high just say nothing?)

Has anyone else ever failed the first test and passed the second? Or failed because of a low carb diet?

I just need a little advice and/or reassurance.
Thanks in advance for your answers.

admin answers:

Hey,

Something happen to me too and I freaked out and was crying and everything since my family has diabetes on both sides of the family. So I had went back in and took the 3 hr test and passed it. But just a heads up bring something to eat for after you are done doing the three hour test. Its not that bad really but the stuff you have to drink is double the sugar then the 1st test. Try not to throw it up or you will have to go back in a different day and do it again. When I was finish with my 3 hr about 20 mins later my husband and I went to the store since I was feeling fine and by the time I got to the store and walked in I almost passed out because my blood level dropped really fast thats why I say to get something to eat right after you are done testing.

I wouldn’t worry to much about it. Come to find out that there are allot of women fail the 1st test then pass the second one. Also for the diet and everything don’t change anything you are doing til the test comes back but I am sure you will be just fine.

Good luck and let me know how they come out.

Your Questions About Complex Carbohydrates List

Mary asks…

Where do the calories come from in metamucil?

all the carbohydrates listed are soluble fiber and dietary fiber…
5 carbohydrates = 20 calories, but since fiber cant be used as energy…. are the calories coming from an unlisted amount of protein?
I know the ingredients include maltodextrin which is a complex carbohydrate….
Is this where the calories are coming from the complex carbohydrates that they dont list?? Or would that be included in the total carbohydrates?

The package lists it like this..
total carbohydrates = 5 grams
Dietary fiber = 3 grams
soluble fiber =2 grams

just a little confused on how this will affect on my low carb diet…

admin answers:

Yes the calories come from the fiber, maltodextrin is a carbohydrate that does aid in energy, but since its a complex carbohydrate it does not effect blood insulin levels. One gram of carbohydrates has 4 calories, no matter what the source. There for, 5 carbs times 4 cals a carb= 20 cals.

admin answers:

1. What is RNA and explain what it does and aslo do the same wth DNA pelase and thank u .?

RNA is just single stranded. DNA is double stranded.

Just remember this: DNA is your genetic information, and it is the exact sequence to make protein. However, since it is so important data, that it need some “copy machine” to do the work.

So Before protein can be made, it needs to be transcipt to RNA, then translate to protein. You may want to check out central dogma. RNA have a few types. MRNA, tRNA, rRNA, etc. They are all required to make protein during the central dogma steps.

2. What are the six characteristics of living things?
They contain DNA or RNA(for virus only, but not consider as living thing) , Cell, organelles. They breathe, they eat, they metabolize and reproduces.

3. Diffence betweet simple adn complex carbohydrates?
What is adn?

4. Example of food source tht contains simple carbohydrates?

Glucose water?

5 Example of a food sourcethat contains complex carbohydrates?

Bread? Rice? Sweet potato? They need enzymes to change them into simple carbohydrates,

6. List the 5 building blocks of cell and describe one function of each……

Plant or animal cell?
DNA: genetic information for the organism to make protein
Cell membrane: protect the cell
Cytoskeleton: give the shape of the cell
mitochiondrion: Contain enzymes that break down ATP to ADP.
Cytoplasm: contain floating enzymes and chemical that helps make cell pH level and oxygen level, and water level.

7. Explain why an organism that lives in land has more complex mechanism to maintain homeostasis than one living in water.

If not, without homeostatsis mechanism, you tend to fall sick /die much easily because different temperature, pH, water level could kill you. Compared to organsim on water, temperature is more constant.

8. Explain why a single- celled organsim produces an offspring identical to itself . THEN summeriza the section phspholipids…

Jenny asks…

Give at least 5 examples of enzymes and identify each enzyme’s substrate and reaction products?

An important step in utilizing complex carbohydrates as an energy source is to break their glycosidic linkage. This is necessary because the digestive system cannot absorb any carbohydrates larger than a monosaccharide. Compile a list of at least 5 enzymes that can accomplish this. Identify each enzyme’s substrate and reaction products. You may include enzymes found in any organisms…

HELP!!!

admin answers:

Glycoside hydrolases are typically named after the substrate that they act upon. Thus glucosidases catalyze the hydrolysis of glucosides and xylanases catalyze the cleavage of the xylose based homopolymer xylan. Other examples include lactase, amylase, chitinase, sucrase, maltase, neuraminidase, invertase, hyaluronidase and lysozyme.

Bingo! 5 of these act in digestion.
Lactase, amylase, chitinase, sucrase, maltase (invertase too).

Lactase: the ?-glycosidic bond in D-lactose is hydrolyzed to form D-galactose and D-glucose.

Calories and carbohydrates and losing weight… Soo confused, please help.?

Okay so somebody PLEASE help me. I have tons of questions about tons of stuff so i didn’t know what to do for with question. Well people say not to eat carbohydrates when your on a diet. But can’t you still with excercise?!?! Gosh, ppl are dumb then!!! And if you can’t eat carbohydrates then they say complex carbohydrates, but wouldn’t it be either or because of excersice?!?!!! Can’t they be specific? I need to lose weight and im confused with all these “buts” & “ifs” annd “howevers” goddamned people. And then websites say(they are true not lies) that an apple a day keeps doctor away and it’s okay to eat more than one apple a day?? Well i just found out that apparently apples have carbs or complex carbs whatever…. But I thought apples were healthy?! Now can’t eat them cause’ they have carbs! So can I eat more than one apple a day? Does it matter how much excersice i get could i still have 2 or 3 for a snack? What about tangerines and bananas? Can i have more than one a day? And same thing applies, does it matter how much excersice i get?? OBVIOUSLY, im not gonna get the EXACT same amount of excersice i get each day, it’s gonna be varied right?? Like if I do 5 hours of excersice one day at my barn and then the other I day I don’t go to the barn and instead I walk home from school and do some house work which is 1 or 2 hours, can i still have the fruit??? I heard fruit is so healthy so shouldn’t u be able to eat a lot????? Like geez, it’s better than chocolate…. And on a site it states… “Complex carbohydrates are mostly found in vegetables, nuts, grains, oat meals, and nuts. Listed below are some of the examples of complex carbohydrates food:
Barley Oat bran bread Low fat yogurt Onions Zucchini Tomatoes Lentils Kidney beans Apples Grapefruits Pears Carrots Oranges, etc.,,
ughhh Im sorry I can’t finish the rest because there’s too much writing. :(

admin answers:

Hi,
Ok, right I am going to tell you something now. FORGET EVERYTHING YOU HAVE READ OR HEARD!!!! You are so confused you need to get back to basics ok.
Don’t worry about fruit being a carbohydrate, yes some have more sugar in than others, but it is better to eat an apple than tuck into cookies!
In UK we say high glycemic and low glycemic foods which I find more useful. So the higher the rating, the faster the sugar is absorbed into the blood stream.
So, go back to basics, think lots of veggies, lots of fruit, lean meat/fish whole grains, lots of water. Then allow yourself a tiny treat a day.
Hope this helps. More tips/advice? Just get back to me.

Your Questions About Healthy Foods For Weight Loss

Susan asks…

What are some foods that are good for weight loss?

I drink a lot of green tea, and I hear pistachio nuts are good for you, are there any other healthy foods that promote weight loss? Thanks.

admin answers:

Richard asks…

What are some good foods to eat for weight loss- healthy meals, etc?

admin answers:

Fruits, vegetables, beans, lean meats, nuts.

David asks…

Is this healthy weight loss, and other suggestions?

I’m 21, and was 230 pounds about 2-3 weeks ago, I have been dieting since then and am at 225 now. I do a light to moderate amount of physical activity. Anyways, I’ve been consistently eating approx 1500-1700 calories daily for my weight loss. I am in college so it is often difficult to find healthy food, but I am eating mostly fruits and vegetables, tuna, and having lunch meat or bagel sandwitches and running 2-3 days a week.

So thats what I doing, could I be doing anything better, or am I doing something not as good as I should. Is that too little calories too eat for my size or can I reduce them even more. Should I be eating other types of food, vitamins, etc.

Just looking for some good general advice.

admin answers:

Thats a good amount of calories. Try running 5 days a week for 20-25 mins. To make sure your getting all your nutrients, take a multivitamin, like flinstones! (yes, even if your 21) and drink atleast 4-5 bottles of water a day. Acquire a taste to green tea and have 2 cups in the morning and 2 at night. The tea bags from lipton are great that come in a box. Best of luck and keep up the good work :)

ps. Try the Turbo Jam dvds, the 5 workout set. Their great, and a great variety from abs to cardio to sculpting!

Eating tips for healthy weight loss?

I’m trying to lose some weight the healthy way; by eating right and exercising more. I’m just looking for some tips on ways to eat healthy foods. For example; eating a piece of fruit for breakfast, or substituting certain foods for others. I’ll take anything. I’m not being obsessive about it, but I’m just looking for some simple things I can do to lose some weight.

Thanks for your help!

admin answers:

If you want something simple, you just follow these rules:
1. Eat lots and lots of vegetables and fruits
2. Eat less carbs, cholesterol, fat and oily meals.
3. Exercise regularly
