Your Questions About Good Questions About Obesity

Mark asks…

Why are people so tolerant of fat people?

I recently asked a good question on here that unfortunately got wrongfully deleted. The question was asking fat people the reason why they are fat, and don’t do anything about it. The answers had leaned most towards people simply not caring, and saying they are happy being fat. Sure there are rare diseases some people may have but that’s the minority. One answerer made a good point (although a point I already knew), that thats america is simply way too tolerant of fat people.

Now before you guys go thinking “This guy is some idiot who has been naturally skinny all his life”, let me tell you, I’m not and come from obese parents. My mom died around her 50s due primarily to extreme obesity, and my dad in his 60s is so big he can’t walk, and spends 95% of his life in bed. I also became a fat kid before I knew any better. I’m definetly at a genecical disadvantage, It is much harder for me to loose weight, yet through a strict diet, and exercise, I manage to be in very good shape, I could just about be on a magazine cover. Point being, I know what its like.

Anyways, on to the real question. Why are people so tolerant of fat people, and act like its perfectly ok? It simply is not ok. Statistics prove obesity is one of the largest preventable killers in america, along with cigarettes, and higher than illegal drugs. It causes all sorts of other health complications.

The only valid argument I’ve really heard before is people say “Well, that person is happy being fat”. Well, I think that is a big lie and excuse. Sure they may be somewhat a happy person, but they would be much happier if they were skinny. I mean, your giving up sooo many of lifes simple pleasures (or at the very least making them much more difficult), like getting into a canoe, or going on a good hike, or playing sports, being too heavy to skydive, or simply being able to walk up a flight of stairs without getting out of breath. The list could go on and on, there are simply so many of lifes pleasures they cannot do, or struggle to do. People seem to mostly agree that cigarettes are bad, and that illegal drugs are bad, why do so many people tolerate obesity as not being a problem?

Obesity also affects the non obese in negative ways also, for a couple examples
-The healthcare situation. If everyone lived healthy, and only needed to see a doctor about once every 10 years like me, everyone’s health insurance would be so much cheaper. But you’ve got all these fat and obese people with all their obesity related health problems, constantly needing medical attention, prescription drugs, etc. It skyrockets everyone’s cost.
-Just being in public with them. You go to a parking lot, what do you see? Rather than just pull into a good spot and go. A fat person cruises around and around trying to find a close spot. They spend more time driving than the walk would have taken. I constantly see fat people spending 10 minutes waiting for someone to put all their groceries and family in the car to take their spot, when there will be open spots just 30 feet further away. They screw up all the traffic in the parking lots, then you get in the store and they are blocking aisles, can’t turn their heads far enough to even be aware of their surroundings, etc.
-The food situation. Their are so many fat people demanding all these horrible high fat foods, that these extremely unhealty foods become the most common in america, and make it much more difficult for a healty eater to eat. I wish I could just pull up to any fast food restaurant and get a HEALTHY meal, but I can’t, 90% of any fast food is too unhealty for me to eat. Makes it a hassle, since I have to mostly cook my own food, or eat at the select few places that have a healthy dish.

That’s just 3 examples that come to mind, there are many more. The only good thing they do is make the skinny and athletic people look even better.

So, long winded question, but back to the just of it why are people so tolerant of fat people, and act like its perfectly OK, when its not?
I’ve had some good answers so far, especially TequilaRose, Rebecca, Lalala, and Cat. Keep them coming.

Just to clarify, I’m not trying to say they should be “ridiculed”, but I believe it should not be accepted and told that it is ok to be fat, because it is not.

I’m saying this both for their own good, and public in general. Same way I’ll tell a smoker they should not smoke, and same way I’ll tell a druggie they should not do drugs.

And anyone who disagrees with me, please explain your position better like Magenta did, as to why they should be accepted. Anyone who disagrees but cannot justify their position any better than giving a “your an idiot” type of answer, obviously does hot have a good point.

Yes, there are people such as CAT and others who have health conditions or diseases causing their conditions, those people are excluded, since I’m main talking about people who choose to be fat.
Also, fat people DO affect the food supply. Just like CAT stated, healthier foods do indeed cost more than unhealthy foods.

Take me for example, I will never ever even touch sausage, hot dogs, bacon, butter, oils, mayonaise, anything at all that has been fried, or anything else with too much fat. Never. And I will always buy the healthiest, lowest fat version of any food. For example, I will never get 2% milk ever, only skim. I will never buy hamburger with more than 4% fat. I highly avoid msg, hfcs, artaficial sweeteners, etc. If everyone else was as health conscious, all those unhealthy foods would cease to exist and be replaced by healthier foods. If everyone else was like me, and refused to buy 95% of the food from fast food restaurants, they would end up changing over to healthier foods.

With healthier foods more plentiful, it would be easier for everyone, and the world would be a better place. More people would be active, and more places to be active would be built.

I agree with you completely. Smokers get dirty looks and have to huddle off to designated areas – why are we forced to accept obesity as normal? For most people it is a choice as well. I think it’s more a case that THE TRUTH HURTS. Obese people don’t like admitting they have a responsibility for their bodies. Many people shirk responsibility in many areas of life – and obesity is just one that is easy to see. Deadbeats dads, painkiller addicts, and child molesters aren’t recognizable on the street.

Yes I just put fat people in league with sex offenders. BRING ON MY THUMBS DOWN. It’s still my opinion and I have a right to it. Obesity is NOT OK.

Susan asks…

Are there any good ways or tools to help morbidly obese people bathe themselves?

Serious answers please. I have a friend who is extremely obese and in a wheel chair. She has a significant problem with body odor, her clothes are always dirty and her hair is always dirty. She is really smart and a wonderful person and everyone who meets her really likes her. We sometimes go places together and her smell is at times overpowering and her personal appearance doesn’t match the intelligent, put-together woman that she is. Surely there has to be a way for her to get clean. I imagine that she doesn’t clean herself because it is too difficult. The degree of her obesity is to the point that her belly goes down past her knees. Does anyone know how morbidly obese people clean themselves? Are there any special tools or modalities? Also, what would be a good idea on how to bring this up to her? We are very close.

I am not asking a question that requires judgement about her obesity or character. She has a medical condition.

admin answers:

I am also very obese, I weigh close to 700lbs. Hygiene is a great challenge when you are this big but also manageable. I utilize several items I got from the website Amplestuff.com, like extended sponges and oversized towels, and also some supplies from a medical supply store, including a bidet for toilet cleaning, a sturdy shower bench, and an extended shower head. I do require some assistance so my wife will assist with making sure I am completely dry and powdered to avoid infections. It is not by any means fun, but the effort is worth it. I know that people judge me as a very very large person already, so I believe I need to give them as little to target about me as possible. I hope this helps!

Sandra asks…

Anybody know any good books/articles on how our ideas about health and illness are conveyed in the media?

In particular on ‘obesity‘, but doesn’t have to be. I just have to answer the question ‘how are our ideas about health and illness conveyed in the media?’ Needing some good books or articles. Do you know any?

I think you’re diet is very…what…..exceptionally well thought out? I like you’re idea’s, and even though you’re young, you are mature enough to understand the way of a fit life……GOOD JOB!

Answer to #1:YES! In a good and bad way…you’re teachers may be concerned about you’re weight loss, because the truth is, the result you want to achieve may make you more skinny and that’s all. You’re skin may sag, and you may find a bad skin reaction. You also might get too addicted to you’re weight loss, and that’s very bad.
While making yourself skinnier and more attractive (if that’s what your basic aim is to) you still need to maintain the healthiness in you’re skin by regularly exfoliating, washing and moisturizing, that includes taking more showers and keeping on top of you’re hygiene. You’re ‘Makeover’ cannot be completed over the summer, and it will take a long time for you to actually make a changing appearance.

Answer to #2:It varies. The reactions are going to be both good and bad, it REALLY depends….everyone has their own views, right? Just keep healthy, and don’t get anorexic….that could end badly and people could start labeling you as a ‘Wannabe’ or ….etc

Answer to #3:Yeah, its good.

Answer to #4:It depends on what you already look like and how intense you’re diet is….don’t OVERDUE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Probably until you’re and adult.

OVERALL: Keep in mind, the key to a healthier lifestyle is inspiration and thinking you can do it in you’re head.
KEEP IT TO A MINIMUM, STAY HEALTHY, BE HAPPIER! A hundred laughs a day can equal a ten mile walk.!

!!!!!!ALSO!!!!!!
Drinking water is EXTREMELY GOOD FOR YOU!!!!
It makes you lose A LOT OF WEIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am effing serious!

I think it’s great that you’re doing this while you’re still young! It will take a lot of dedication and hard work. You’ve put a lot of thought into this, I can tell. If you haven’t shared your plan with some close friends or family members, you should, because they can be a good support system (and you’ll need one, especially during tough times like holidays when the goodies come out).
I’m sure that if you exercise regularly and stick to your diet that you will really amaze yourself and your classmates! I don’t know if you’ll be able to pull off a six pack in 7 months, but if you really stick with your plan, and increase your cardio workouts as you build endurance, then you could definitely get there in a few years.
You’ll look better and feel better for sticking to a healthy lifestyle. When you take care of yourself, people will notice. You’ll be a positive person because positive things will be happening to your body– and people like to be around positive people!
You will definitely get people’s attention. There are always naysayers, but I think most people will be supportive of you. You might even inspire some other people to improve themselves.
I think that as long as you’re getting the proper nutrients, and you don’t overdue it too much in the initial exercises, you’ll be fine. Getting friends and family involved will help you to make sure that you’re losing weight in a healthy way.
Don’t be discouraged if you don’t see the results you want right away. It may take time, but it can happen! =)
Best of luck to you! You’re right, it’s not impossible.

Your Questions About Working Out Is A Lifestyle Quote

Chris asks…

What do you think about this quote?

I know that crossing the border without permission is wrong but when people are desperate to provide food for their families they will do anything to survive. Americans are very fortunate and somehow and somewhere have lost their human compassion and have fallen into this souless creatures. I rather have illegals come in and work for their food then provide a bunch of lazy americans with welfare because they feel we should carry them and the generations they are breeding with the same lifestyle. I feel the people with hatred, racism and black hearts are the only people who call them criminals. When people are hungry all reasoning is out the window
By the way I didn’t make it.
I will repeat I didn’t make this quote some racist Mexican girl did heres the link lay off me man1 I just wanted to show some people how Mexicans view americans. Her name is Yvette.

I believe we as Americans are the most fortunate people in the world, but that doesn’t mean we can solve the world’s problems. We have never turned people away. The problem is that the people crossing the border illegally are not JUST hungry, decent, hardworking humans. There are terrorists, drug dealers, rapists, and murders also coming through. We have to abide by our laws and so should anyone else who wants to be an American. That is also part of the problem. Some want to come here and take advantage of our great nation, but don’t want to be a part of it. They still raise their Mother Country’s flag instead of ours, they speak their native language instead of ours. They do not want to pay taxes like all Americans should. What is the difference if we have lazy Americans or if we have illegals using our system and our tax dollars? If you want to be in America, then you need to do it the legal way and become an American. Only then are you entitled to our freedoms and rights.

Which quote best illustrates the ‘Lets Grow Government’ Crowds mentality?

(3) “I don’t mind showing up for work, but it’s MEAN that they expect me to be productive while at work”.

(4) “Communalism didn’t fail in the Soviet Union, the Soviet people failed communalism”.

(5) “Make as much money as you desire like it’s a capitalist system. Just make sure to pay ME my fair share of what YOU make”.

(6) “Oh gaaawd, my mother just died & I’m only 47 yrs old. Who else can I find to live with that will take care of me like she did”?

(7) “Get a job & drop public assistance? Why would I drop public assistance like it would ruin my lifestyle?”

(8) “Work fascinates me, I can lay back & watch it all day long.”

(9) “Capitalism?!!! That system is only for the SELFISH exploiters amongst society.”

Sharon asks…

Can someone correct this essay!! It’s not a book report it’s a character trait!!look out for grammer errors!!!

The book So B. It by Sarah Weeks leads to a character named Heidi who doesn’t know when her birthday is or who her father is. In fact, the past of Heidi and her mother is a mystery. Heidi lives in an odd lifestyle with her mentally disabled mother and their neighbor Bernadette. Heidi always has luck, and it points her to the right direction, but Heidi wonders more about who she is, where she came from, and why is it only she and her mother. When a mysterious word comes out of her mother’s vocabulary, starts to haunt Heidi, and leads her to Liberty, New York, in search of her mother’s past and most importantly her past.
The main character Heidi shows three main characteristic eager, brave, and smart.
The character Heidi is eager. Even if Heidi doesn’t know her past, she has a lead, and she is eager to find what her mother’s past was about and most importantly her own past. She demonstrates this characteristic when she made a big decision to go out of Nevada to Hilltop home. She wanted to go to find a person named Thurman Hill to get information from an old photo Heidi had found in an old camera. Supposedly the photo was from a Christmas party that her mom was in. Another example of this trait occurs when Heidi made a phone call to Greyhound from a phone booth that was outside, and she found out two important things. One, was that it cost $313 for a round-trip ticket to Liberty to Liberty, New York, and two, she had to be fifteen years or older to travel across the country by herself. Heidi decided to get her money from a slot machine since she knew she had a lot of luck through her life. A quote from the story reveals this trait clearly, “You think I’ll forget about soof and Hilltop and all the rest of it, you want me to forget, but I won’t. If I do, I’ll end up like Mama, full of missing pieces.” Heidi’s drastic plans show how eager she is to find out why her mom keeps saying the word soof, and also what the photograph has to do with the word. And so, Heidi is an eager character.
The character Heidi is brave. When she finds old photographs of her mom at a Christmas party, she’s brave enough to go on a cross-country journey by herself from Nevada to Liberty, New York on a bus. This shows that the character is brave because she has the courage to do something that no twelve years old could do. Heidi had never been to New York and never traveled alone. Heidi said to herself that she would have to go to New York no matter what. This demonstrates that nothing could stop her in search of her past and also her mother’s. And so, Heidi is a brave character.
The character Heidi is smart in unique ways. Even though she’s only twelve years old she’s determined to get to liberty, New York to ask Mr. Hilltop about her mother’s past. She demonstrates this characteristic when she wants money for a bus ticket and she uses her talent in winning that money from a slot machine. Another example of this trait occurs when she wins the money and has to count the quarters so it makes $313. A thought from Heidi reveals this trait clearly, “It was early in the morning and nobody was around to pay attention, so I squat down next to the machine and counted out my winnings. Twelve hundred fifty-six quarters. One dollar more than I needed.” This demonstrates that even if Heidi didn’t have a lot of time to study she was very smart in math. And so, Heidi is a smart character.
Heidi’s eager, brave and smart through out the whole book and that makes her an exciting and hard working character. Heidi expresses emotion in every thing she says and makes the book more interesting than it already is. So B. It is such an amazing and sad book, because there is a lot of suspense going on and heartbreaking moments, and an unforgettable book.

admin answers:

Ok, when I change something I’ll put it in brackets [ ] and out beside it I’ll put in parenthesis ( ) why I changed it.

[In the book So B. It by Sarah Weeks there is a character named Heidi who doesn’t know when her birthday is or who her father is.] (general coherence) In fact, the past of Heidi and her mother is a mystery. Heidi lives in an odd lifestyle with her mentally disabled mother and their neighbor Bernadette. Heidi always has luck, and it points her [in] (to implies that it’s leading her to a definite destination) the right direction, but Heidi wonders more about who she is, where she came from, and why [her father isn't there.] (general coherence) [Heidi's mother says a mysterious word, "soof, " that starts to haunt Heidi, and leads her to Liberty, New York, to search for answers about her and her mother's past.] (coherence and parallel structure – I think you should mention the word here so it makes sense when you say it later)
[The main character, Heidi, shows three main characteristics: eagerness, bravery, and intelligence.] (You have to set of the appositive, Heidi, with commas. You need a colon after characteristics to show that you are beginning a list. You have to change the words from their adjective form to noun form to list them as things.)
()[The words, the character, are not necessary.]Heidi is eager. Even [though] Heidi doesn’t know [anything about] her past, she has a lead, and she is eager to find [answers about her and her mother's past.] She demonstrat[ed] (Because made is past tense demonstrated has to be too. You can’t change tenses in the middle of a sentence.) this characteristic when she made a big decision to go out of Nevada to Hilltop home. She wanted to go to find a person named Thurman Hill to get information from an old photo [she] (When you begin with Heidi and then say she, it reads like your are referring to two different people.) had found in an old camera. [She thought the photograph was from a Christmas party that her mother had attended.] (The sentence has to be rephrased because you can’t end with a preposition.) Another [example of Heidi's eagerness occured when she made a phone call to Greyhound from [an outdoor phone booth], and she found out two important things. [The first] was that it cost $313 for a round-trip ticket to Liberty, and [the second] was that she had to be fifteen years or older to travel across the country by herself. Heidi decided to get her money from a slot machine since she knew she had a lot of luck through her life. A quote from the story reveals this trait clearly, “You think I’ll forget about soof and Hilltop and all the rest of it, you want me to forget, but I won’t. If I do, I’ll end up like Mama, full of missing pieces.” Heidi’s drastic plans show how eager she is to find out why her mom keeps saying the word soof, and [] (saying also after and is redundant) what the photograph has to do with the word. [Throughout the entire story, Heidi exhibited eargerness.](Restate without repeating)
Heidi is brave. When she finds old photographs of her mom at a Christmas party, she is brave enough to go on a cross-country journey by herself from Nevada to Liberty, New York on a bus. This shows that the character is brave because she has the courage to do something that [most people her age couldn't do.] (It’s not completely impossible for a 12 year old to make it cross country.) Heidi had never been to New York and never traveled alone. Heidi said to herself that she would have to go to New York no matter what. This demonstrates that nothing could stop her in search of her past [and] her mother’s. [Heidi showed bravery by going after her goal against all odds.] (You can’t begin a sentence with “and so,” and you shouldn’t make all of your concluding paragraphs the same.
The character Heidi [shows her intelligence] in unique ways. Even though she’s only twelve years old, she is determined to get to Liberty, New York to ask Mr. Hilltop about her mother’s past. She demonstrates this characteristic when she wants money for a bus ticket and she uses her talent [to win the] money from a slot machine. [She exhibits intelligence again] when she wins the money and has to count 313 dollar’s worth of quarters. A thought from Heidi reveals this trait clearly: “It was early in the morning and nobody was around to pay attention, so I squat down next to the machine and counted out my winnings. Twelve hundred fifty-six quarters. One dollar more than I needed.” This demonstrates that even if Heidi didn’t have a lot of time to study she [had adequate math skills.] [Heidi's intelligence shows in her resourcefulness in making her way to Hilltop on her own.]
[Heidi shows eagerness, bravery, and intelligence throughout the whole book. Her traits make her an exciting protaganist.] (It’s better to use nouns there. – Throughout is one word, not two. – Those traits have nothing to do with her being hard-working so that doesn’t really work there. If you don’t know what protaganist means, it’s basically just the good guy of the story. Your teacher will appreciate the word.) Heidi expresses emotion in [everything] (one word) she says and [in doing so adds emotiong to the story.] [] (You should cut out the last sentence completely. It refers to the whole book, not the character you’re dealing with. It belongs in a book report.)

I hope I helped! This took longer than I thought!

Paul asks…

Is this a good quote to live by?

“What would you do if you knew you could not fail?”

Every time I hear or see this quote it scares me. I think it is because it forces me to analyze fear a little harder. Now obviously everyone’s life would be dramatically different if they were to follow by this philosophy, and I feel mine would be quite uncanny as well. But the question that really causes me stress is if I am living my life as I should be at all. There is obviously no ONE way to live life and it is starting to seem like I am allowing other people to have an enormous amount of control over my life. This ONE way that my life is heading is the cause of school, parents, community, friends, and all the other social forces. Work and go to school, study, get your degree, choose your profession, work 40 years, retire on little money and then reap your rewards when you die. Wait? That doesn’t make sense.

To make this question a little more answerable, let me give some examples of how I would live my life if it were according to the before mentioned quote. If I knew I could NOT fail I would… Create some sort of business or social entrepreneurship group. Move out of my father’s house. Redefine my social persona to my own liking. Date the women I want without society telling me who is beautiful, whom I should date, and at what frequency. Upon graduation of my four year degree leave the USA with whatever money I have and become a vagabond. Say f*ck you to every person who has tried telling me what I SHOULDN’T do. Love my family but not be afraid to live my own lifestyle on my own. Then figure the rest of it out on the road.

This sounds like a fairy tale to me. All arrows point the same direction I have been going of depression and anxiety. I don’t want any of it, but I don’t have the spine to redefine my reality. It seems easy just to say “GO FOR IT” but how the hell do I do that??? I feel like I’m being swallowed by the universe.

I think it’s good in the sence that it can make you realyse what you truely want. But i think that in a wya it advocates no fear for risk. If you folow that quote strictly, i think that you would be more likely to end up being dissapointed. But i think it can be helpfull in a sence that it can give you confidence to go for what you truely want.

Fear is a healthy emotion for a human to have, if you didn’t you would end up doing things that had so much risk you would end up dead. OBVIOUSLY YOU CAN FAIL, SO YOU WILL NEED TO FACTOR THIS INTO WHAT YOU DECIDE TO DO. Even if it is healful for giving you confidence to go for it.

Sandy asks…

Anyone else hate their current lifestyle?

…because I absolutely hate mine.

I’m a 17 year old guy. People would usually consider me as unattractive: short, disproportionate facial features, hairy, acne, etc. I don’t have a girlfriend (obviously). I do my best in taking care of myself–good hygiene, working out, dressing nicely(not too flashy), acne products, and so forth. I clearly have very low self-esteem, which I have tried so hard to work on, but I’m starting to feel like giving up on it.

Currently a junior in a difficult high school, so I have so much to worry about. I messed up my freshman year, so now I’m struggling to get my ideal grades in order to get into a B or B+ college (high standards due to my brothers’ grades and dad’s expectations). I’m also playing a sport that I hate because it takes up so much of my time and energy; I’m not even good at it. I’m only still in it because it’s an extra-curricular activity. My main motivation in getting into a good college is to get into medical school, study for another 3000 years, become successful, and hopefully find the “love” of my life (emphasis on the quotes).

I feel like a zombie, sheep, robot. Whatever it is, I don’t feel free. I don’t see my life getting better. I don’t see hope. It’s late right now, and I have a paper to write, a couple of tests to study for, and a lab due tomorrow. Tonight is going to be yet ANOTHER sleepless night.

I’m more than likely depressed, but I’m not stupid enough to kill myself or anything. It’s just holding me back from doing the things I need to do in order to improve my own lifestyle. Basically, I’m living a cruel and terrifying vicious cycle.

I apologize for the long rant about my stupid life. I was wondering if anyone can relate, or if not…what’s it like on the “other side?”

admin answers:

My favorite thing to say to my kids is ,”Do what you have to do so you can do what you want to do.”

It may not be fun right now, but once you get into college, you will meet people with interests similar to yours and it won’t matter so much what you look like. If you let yourself fall into bad hygine? You will probably spend college alone and graduate school/medical school won’t even consider you. Time passes quickly, and one day you will wake up and realize you are done with school, and when that is over with you will be a successful professional with a decent income, and will have all the freedom you want.

Your Questions About Mushy Poop In Toddlers

Donald asks…

2 year old dark green poop for 2 weeks?

So my toddler has had dark green poop for 2 weeks. It is not really diarrhea. It’s pretty normal consistence I think. But we asked the doctor and he said not to worry but that was a week ago. I am still concerned. She poops probably once a day. Also one of the poops was not green about a week ago at night it was grey with blueberries skins in it. Very mushy. She usually poops in the morning also so it was very strange. The color is usually a dark green like pine green.

admin answers:

Has she been eating a lot of foods with iron in them or taking supplements? Stools can turn dark green when a lot of iron has been added into the diet (i once had to take supplements and freaked the first time i saw this happen to me). If there is too much iron it can also cause constipation problems and then you will have to even it out with fiber. But since it is still going on (and if it isn’t iron), i would ask the doctor again or get a second opinion.

Sharon asks…

fussy toddler eating problems advice needed?

she has what I guess would consider diarrhea its really mushy and at times can be a few time a day although lately only once a day, I did notice though she tends to just love her milk these days and isn’t interested much in food except snacking of course, so maybe thats why she has mushy poop if she is filling up on liquid, but any tips on how to get a fussy toddler to cooperate and eat, its not even that she doesn’t like food its like she just doesn’t want to even try it sometimes like she is trying to rebel like 2 year olds do at times, well she is 2 next month but still. How do I get her to eat her meals properly its driving me nuts, its like soo much food gets wasted, certain things of course like kraft dinner and canned pasta stuff she likes but even sometiems then she is fussy like today she turned her nose up at pizza but she normally likes it, however, she did fill up on a whole cup of milk right beforehand, she begged for her milk cause i prefer to give it to her afterwards for that reason.

admin answers:

Don’t allow her to snack between meals.

Make sure all of her meals are balanced and nutritious

get her to join in when you are cooking and preparing meals, tell her she’s a good cook!

Eat the food she has helped make infront of her

educate her on why it is important to eat etc

reward her with praise when she finishes a meal

make meals fun, for example if you give her a salad, arrange it on the plate like a funny face.

Good luck to both of you!

Lizzie asks…

What is diarrhea?

Okay, I know this is a stupid question, but please answer nicely. With my toddler, there is lots of kinds of poop.

The watery type- totally soaked in diaper leaving only bits of stuff on surface.

The runny type- will drip out of diaper

The semi runny type- will go up back and front of diaper. Very difficult to clean out of folds because it gets everywhere!

The mushy type- will only go up back of diaper

The semi formed type- stays in diaper

Formed- so nice because it can be cleaned with fewer than 3 wet wipes!

So, where is the distinction between normal and diarrhea? Dont tell me different than normal because there is no normal, and even if there was I wouldnt remember….(she has been sick for a while.) I am way too embarrassed to ask the doctor this.

Also, sometimes it is white. Why? I heard that if it is green that just means it is not staying in her gut long and doesnt fully decompose.

Thanks for help!
Dont worry everyone- she is being seen. She has an appointment with a pediatric gastoentenologist next month. I just wanted to start a journal of pooping, playing, sleeping and eating…. try to see if it is food linked.

admin answers:

You should so not be embarrassed to bring this up with your doctor that is what doctor’s do!!!! Probably anything with the word “runny” in it is diarrhea. If your child is sick and is having diarrhea often please take them to the doctor. I am only just starting nursing school and don’t know much, but I do know if my child was having abnormal or inconsistent bowel movements I would make an appointment just to make sure everything is okay and that there is not something more serious going on.

David asks…

question about toddler bms (ya, I know…sorry)?

sorry it’s a little gross…but I haven’t changed a toddler other than my daughter in a while… (my niece has been out of diapers for 3 years, and I honestly don’t remember what it was like)
so anyway…are toddler bms supposed to be like adult ones? (and yes, I mean poop, or whatever you want to call it)
my daughter has really mushy ones all the time. it’s never totally solid. frequently goes out of the diaper.
the reason I’m asking is because I was reading about potty training in what to expect, and they suggested putting your child’s bm from their diaper into the toilet and flushing it down, so they get the idea of where it’s supposed to go. I’m like, get it in there? With what? A stick?
Is she abnormal? Should I talk to her doctor about this? She’s allergic to milk, so she drinks soy milk, not cow’s milk….but we still give her things like reg. butter, chocolate, waffles, cookies, etc. Do you think that’s the problem? She’s not gassy, her bum is rarely red, and she doesn’t have stomach issues. She’s a good weight, and not losing any. So..what do you think? Thanks!
ya..she just had pneumonia and was on antibiotics, so right now it’s bad from all that…so she’s going for a lung check next week..I can always ask her pedi then :)
no no, she has soy milk in a sippy cup with meals, and like, in her cereal, or if I make her pudding..she has soy yogurt, and soy icecream. That sort of stuff
she doesn’t eat that stuff every day! geez. I just meant that she does eat it once in a while, and all that has milk in it, so maybe just that little bit of milk bothers her. we’ve already decided to go no-chocolate, because it just makes her too crazy. trust me, she’s a wonderful eater. you won’t find a kid that likes onions, garlic, spinach and eggs like her.
also, she can’t have yogurt. Or anything “lacto” or “lactos” or “lactic”. She’s allergic…hence the soy. (not intollerant, allergic.)

admin answers:

We have this issue, too!! Our ped. Said it isn’t cause for concern since he doesn’t go any more frequently than would be expected, it isn’t watery, it isn’t causing irritation, he isn’t gassy or fussy, and he is gaining weight well. I suppose it is better than having to deal with constipation, but we go through a lot of baby wipes!

Susan asks…

Your Questions About How To Prevent Obesity Essay

William asks…

rate my creative writing essay? can u help me end it?

“You can never be too rich or too thin” According to Posh Spice anyway. Scan the covers of any glossy fashion magazine and you are sure to be greeted by rail thin, anorexic looking models, accompanied by bold headlines screaming for your attention with captions like: “How To Loose Those Pounds In 24 Hours” or “Liposuck Your Fat Away!” All this to achieve the worldly ideal of being model thin. The high prevalence of obesity and overweight problems in our culture means much more emphasis is placed on losing weight rather than gaining it, so much so it is easy to forget about people on the other end of the scales who have the problem of being too thin.

Being skinny might be an unattainable goal for some, a virtue to yet others, but to me, it is a major drawback. For one, I never am able to find a pair of jeans or any clothing in my size, as most of the designers cater to European sized frames, so an Extra Small size could well translate into a Medium in this country. To add insult to injury, the salesgirls would usually suggest I check out the kids department to find a fit. Ouch! I don’t suppose that is too far off because I once wore my 10 year old sister’s shirt to a function and no one seemed to notice the fact that it was cut for a child. Having said that, most of my clothes, especially my jeans have to be sent to the tailor for a refitting to prevent it from falling to my ankles. It is an unnecessary service that costs time and money, but it’s a heck of a lot better than rummaging through the juniors section.

Still want to be skinny? If you’re a girl, you might want to rethink your bid. Being severely underweight can make it difficult for a woman to conceive. One of the reasons for this is that body fat is essential in the reproductive process. In women with extremely low levels of body fat menstrual cycles can become very irregular and sometimes nonexistent. When the menstrual cycle is thus affected so is ovulation. Body fat also helps in the release of hormones that are necessary for the body to produce the egg. The good news is if infertility is due to being underweight there is a simple and usually effective solution. Gaining weight reverses the negative effects in most cases of infertility caused because the woman who is underweight.

Speaking of which, another drawback to being stick thin is that it creates an illusion of healthiness, when in fact, it could be the total opposite. Naturally thin people do not see the need to exercise as they feel they can’t afford to loose another pound, but lack of physical activity can prove detrimental to their health in later life. Being genetically lucky, the underweight are also unlikely to watch their diet. Although their high metabolism might prevent them from piling on the pounds, this does not exclude them from adhering to healthy eating habits as heart problems are no respecter of kilograms.

admin answers:

This is a good essay with only two minor errors that I saw. I would include a paragraph about anorexia and other such illnesses and then finish by referring back to your opening statement, ending with a quip about your choosing to work on the getting rich side rather than the getting thinner side because you feel that it’s just healthier for you all around.

The errors I saw were:

“How To Loose Those Pounds In 24 Hours”
It should be “How to Lose Those Pounds in 24 Hours”

and

…my jeans have to be sent to the tailor for a refitting to prevent it from falling to my ankles.
Should be: … My jeans have to be sent to the tailor for a refitting to prevent them from falling to my ankles.

Good Luck.

Just try to tie together all of your points without repeating yourself. If you feel up to it even end on a statement that will keep your reader thinking. Also, in your final paragraph “Naturally thin people do not see the need to exercise as they feel they can’t afford to loose another pound,” Loose is as in: my pants are loose. Lose is to have lost something. Little tip: lose loses an O (when compared to loose lol). Your conclusion doesn’t have to be very long, 50-75 words should be quite sufficient; at least it was in my year 12 English class!

—-Changes in Body Weight: Freshman 15

Today, many freshman students don’t know how to handle their eating habit and physical activity in a right way due to the new environment. Why have people always said freshman 15. Is this just a myth or truth? Some research shows that freshman students are lacking of physical exercised and eating three meals at a buffet-style dinning hall caused them weight change. Did students concern about their health from gaining weight? Gaining weight might appear minor for body in a short term, but it can cause serious health problems in a long term. In order to avoid those problems students must eat balance and do amounts of exercise to stay with a healthy lifestyle through all four years of college. The two study reports “The “freshman 5” A Meta- Analysis of Weight Gain in the Freshman Year of College” authors Rachel Vella-Zarb and Frank J. Elgar and the “Change in Body Weight and Fat Mass of Men and Woman in the First Year of College-Study of the “Freshman 15” authors Daniel J. Hoffman, Peggy Policastro, Virginia Quick, and Soo-Kyung Lee , argues that it is important to identify the exact causes behind weight gain changes and know how to devise appropriate prevention strategies to the students. Although both articles have collect good data about what are the factor effect student being overweight, Vella-Zarb did a better job by giving stronger details from a wide-ranging of year study with 3401 students, establishing Hoffman’s articles are weaker with only 67 students in the study.
One of the weight gain problem issue “The “freshman 5” A Meta- Analysis of Weight Gain in the Freshman Year of College,” Rachel A. Vella-Zarb , MA of psychology department, and Frank J. Elgar, PhD of psychology department at Carleton University. Vella-Zarb and Elgar cite their research from twenty-four studies that published in the year between January 1985 and April 2008 to support the conflict of freshman weight gain and the prevention strategies (Vella-Zarb & Elgar 163). The article examined several factors that associated with weight gain: low physical activity levels throughout the year, high junk food consumption, recent dieting, evening snacking, and a combination of dietary restraint and living in residences (Vella-Zarb & Elgar 164).Through the investigation, Vella-Zard and Elgar concluded that greater understanding of freshman weight gain could lead to prevention of this weight gain and thus a decreases in overweight and obesity among young adults (Vella-Zard &Elgar166).In particular, Valla-Zard and Elgar comments, “college health care providers should design weight gain prevention programs for first year students” meaning that programs should require for students to attend and give skills to prevent from weight gain, such as stress and lifestyle habits that can cause the factors of gaining weight instead of telling them started to eat less (Vella-Zard & Elgar 165).College should give a right message for students to balance their intake and exercised, buffet-style is all you can eat, but also mean need to moderate balance energy intake and expenditure in body weight, otherwise many student will end up with gaining weight unless they get greater understanding how to stay with a healthy life.
The other article entitled Change in Body Weight and Fat Mass of Men and Woman in the First Year of College-Study of the “Freshman 15”detail by Daniel J. Hoffman, Peggy Policastro, Virginia Quick, and Soo-Kyung Lee, faculties in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey in New Brunswick. They examine weight change from focus on a sample of freshman, who attending the State University of New Jersey. The method they used to determine the weight change is not powerful enough and it is harder to believe those facts only from 64 students .Therefore, the result of the study finding that students didn’t pay much attention in their intake and outtake during a new environment, which cause them weight keep increasing. Hoffman concluded that “students recognize that weight changes seemingly minor and perhaps even harmless changes in eating or exercise behavior may result in large changes in weight over an extended period of time” (Homan43). In particular, Hoffman states, “For those students who experience weight gain over the period we studied, if their energy balance is not controlled, they could placing at risk for obesity and chronic diseases later in life” (Hoffman 45) which mean take controlled of what they eat is important for the solution.
Overall, both journal articles have credible issues about the reasons of weight gain, because the information proves that is coming from valid experiments, which make the reader more believable. Both studies also provides similar claim for their supporting reason to prevent weight gain among students entering college is great and it is impor

Here’s some pointers:
~Always remember to indent for the first sentance of your paragraph.
~In a formal essay never say don’t. Instead say do or does not. Same thing for isn’t, wasn’t, (etc), instead say is not, was not.
~The sentance “Why have people always said freshmen 15.” doesn’t really make to me (the “outside reader”, aka me). I don’t know what that is.You should briefly explain what Freshmen 15 is.
~I’m pretty sure it should be “gaining weight may appear”, instead of “might appear”. Also in order to avoide “these problems” instead of “those problems” sounds better. It also sounds nicer to say “Another article”, instead of “the other article” (obviously don’t put the quotation marks in, I’m just using them to make what I’m saying easier to understand)

Carol asks…

May someone please critique my essay?

In “The Gospel of Food” by Barry Glassner believe that a fast food industry changes our culture with food and health issues. The poor, middle class, and adolescents fall in the category of the ethnic restaurant that is cheap. Now a day, people are getting to lazy to take time to at least make a sandwich or to use their manners without grabbing the food with their hands. Society will always change their culture, it does not matter if someone eats a burger with there hands or dine at a place where the food is cheap. Attending daily to a fast food area is a problem people need to learn how to limit there cravings for a hamburger.

Malnutrition has always been a problem in the community. As Bailey Burritt states that bad eating habits occur by “ignorance not poverty”. Anyone has the choice to eat a healthy and a balanced diet. Taking time to cook a meal for the family prevents issues with food crisis. Food poisoning always occurs at a fast food their products are not healthy. These food are kept processed, who knows if the meat is not spoiled. Children spend most of there time at the fast food chains and less in activities. Obesity, heart disease, and high cholesterol happen frequently when consuming fast food daily. Social status is changing because of these restaurants. Foreigners that come to America experience the difference of food and culture. Adolescent from France, prefer “self service aspect, absence of table settings, utensils, and the usual rules of etiquette”. The French tradition is to always eat at the fanciest restaurant with utensils and a posture of high class.

I’m of two minds about Barry Glassner’s claim that the food chain changes our customs with food and health. On one hand, I agree that society is changing their habits with food and our health problem has increased. On the other hand, I’m not sure if we should make a big deal of how people act or eat. When someone enters a fast food area, sits down expecting a waiter/waitress to take their order. That is not going to happen, these areas improves personal skills of doing things on your own. Utensils and the rules of manners do not play a part with a hamburger. Imagine someone using a fork for a hamburger. Would this seem strange or awkward? Of course they would seem awkward and strange. The only time proper manners should occur is at home, school, or a fancy restaurant. Health dilemma, there is no excuse for not feeding your child with healthy food. I understand single mothers have to work double shift to maintain a roof over their child’s head. That is not an excuse for being lazy or taking time to teach your child to prepare something easy and healthy. A mother complicates matters further when she writes, “My husband left us a few years ago and it’s just me and my son now. I work different shifts over at the hospital and don’t have much time to cook.” In other words, this mother believes that it is alright to feed their child every day fast food. This mother is a nurse as a RN they should know that fast food is bad for a child.

Although I agree with Barry Glassner up to a point, I still suggest that the main focus should be on health issues and not how people act when their socializing at these type of places. If mothers would stop to think about their child, not their job, they would realize the risk that may develop into obesity, heart disease, and high cholesterol. Manners at a fast food chain are ridiculous, people choose the way they want to act or eat. Glassner should stop worrying about changes in our behavior and focus more on other important facts.

Tummy pain after colonoscopy/endoscopy. 15 ): help ?

Hi,
So yesterday (wednesday) I got an endoscopy/colonoscopy (was given general anesthesia). Well, at first after waking up (was in recovery for 1.5 hours) I felt great and wanted to just to home but then in the car I started feeling really nauseous and in pain. In the hospital I ate a little bit of a Popsicle but not much at all. Well the first few times I went to the bathroom I had blood (I still now have miralax in me and everything I’ve tried to eat comes right out) and so the pain is still there and hurts a lot. When I walk I’m a bit shaky but okay. Yesterday though I felt like I was going to pass out so I went and sat down and drank some juice to spike my blood sugar and was okay (I’ve passed out twice in the past year-one at Cortisone shot and one getting bloodwork so I know what it feels like before hand)
Well what should I do?
15, female.
Thanks!

admin answers:

Other than passing blood, the nausea, bloating and cramping are know effects of consuming Miralax or other polyethylene glycol (PEG3350) based laxatives. When used as a prep it can take several days to clear the system. It is not normal to pass blood unless the doctor failed to verify the bleeding was stopped after removing a polyp or the doctor accidentally caused some bleeding.

I am always awake for my colonoscopy and I can say for fact my doctor doesn’t leave the area where she takes a sample until she sees that any bleeding is stopped. I have never passed blood after a colonoscopy and I have been through this 5 times and always had polyps removed. Also, I have never experienced the effects of PEG3350 because I always insist on a different bowel prep.

Call your doctor as passing blood does not sound normal..

The odd thing is, the burning doesn’t stay that way, it turns on and off at different times. It seems to come from using my legs or when the skin stretches when I use my legs.
I also get burning on my feet sometimes too, just from my shoe rubbing. If I walk with no shoes on, I get the pins and needles feeling.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Perhaps PVD or PAD….i know my mothers legs burn and hurt when she walks or is on her feet at all….but her PVD is really bad….don’t know if this helps. Certainly couldn’t hurt to mention it to your doctor.

Ken asks…

Will my boyfriend ever grow up?

My boyfriend and I have been together almost two years. When we first met, he was 17 and I was barely 18, so we were both pretty immature. Over the last two years, though, I feel like I’ve progressed and he’s stayed the same, or maybe even gotten worse. The way he acts has irritated me for a while, but it never really was too big of an issue. We moved in together (some other roommates live with us too) in December, and everything is coming to light.

He is 19 now, and still refuses to take responsibility for himself. Everything that happens to him is someone else’s fault. One recent example: He is an insulin dependent diabetic. He rarely checks his blood sugar and takes his insulin when he “feels he needs it”. He does not keep back up insulin at our house, instead he keeps it at his grandmothers house. So two weeks ago he ran out of insulin. At 10 am he took the last 30 units from the vial. He had work at six. Instead of choosing to go get some more insulin, he sat around and played video games all day until the very last minute when he had to leave. After being at work for no more than 30 minutes, and drinking 3 cups of cherry coke, his blood sugar spiked over 650. He asked for a break, and the manager said he could have five minutes to call someone to bring insulin, but that he really needed him to work because it was busy. So my boyfriend goes to the break room and sits down for about 15 minutes. A manager comes and finds him and tells him he has to get back to work, and he is appalled by this and walks out and quits. Now, to me, if I had to place blame, I think it’s obviously his fault for either not having extra insulin here or not going to get some. But to him, the manager is just an a**hole and it’s completely their fault he had to quit and he thinks there is nothing he could’ve done different to make the situation work out differently.

His dad pays for his gas and car insurance. When he’s out of gas and can’t get in touch with his dad, he freaks out. I often ask him why he can’t put gas in his own car, even a gallon or two until he can get with his dad, and he just looks at me like I’m stupid. When we first moved in, his dad loaned him money to pay the first month’s rent. Instead of paying rent with it, my boyfriend blew through the money and spent it on whatever the hell he wanted. He went back to his dad to ask for more, and instead of being told no, his dad handed it over without even a slap on the wrist, then told him not to worry about paying any of it back. Our bills were due the 25th. When we got them, I went ahead and paid them in full because I was able to, then told the other roommates what their portion was. The others all paid me within 24 hours. He still says he doesn’t have the money to pay me; however, he DOES have money to eat out every single night. Now that he’s quit his job, instead of searching for a new one, he lays around on his butt all day. To his credit, he is in college and goes to classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. But, he doesn’t keep up with his reading or his assignments, then when he doesn’t do well he blames it on the teacher for not knowing what they’re doing. He also will not help around the house. There are piles of trash everywhere where he just throws his trash down and keeps doing what he’s doing. If I ask him to help me clean up, he says he will, but he never does. Monday night, around 5 pm, I asked him if he could unload the dishwasher before his class the next morning. He said he could, however it’s still sitting there, waiting to be unloaded. I remind him in a polite, non-nagging way every day and he apologizes and says he’ll do it…but he doesn’t.

If I say anything about any of this, he turns into a five year old and has a big hissy fit, saying things like “No one appreciates what I do!” “I work so hard and no one sees that, they only see when I mess up!” “I don’t know what else I can do for you, I’m clearly doing all I can.”

He is also 100% a freeloader. Everywhere, everytime. If you say no to him, he has a fit. I, myself, am barely making ends meet between my job, school, and paying the bills, but I AM making it. If we go somewhere, usually when it’s food, he always asks me to get him something, usually he wants to spend 10 or 15 dollars. He has more than enough money himself, because his dad keeps handing it over for no reason. If I tell him I’m not able to get him anything it is a huge deal, and I’m a terrible person. But if I ask him to buy me something, or even to loan me the money until we get back home because I forgot my purse, the answer is haha no every time.

This is all very frustrating for me. We were raised completely different ways, and it confuses me to watch him do the things he does, or to see his parents just give him things for no reason, generally when he’s actually done somethi

Joseph asks…

Anyone fail 1hr. Glucose Challenge Test…?

and then pass the 3hr? (For gestational diabetes)

I failed the first one, but I also didn’t fast for it like the lab says to because my Dr. told me not to.
Now I have to go in for the 3hr. one (which sucks) and I’m concerned I’m going to fail, even tho I know I don’t have gestational diabetes because I’ve been monitoring my blood glucose with a meter at home for the last 2 days and its been completely normal.
The thing is, I read somewhere that low-carb diets can affect the test. Well I’m on a low-carb diet but they never asked me that when they did the test. And if my body isn’t used to taking in that much sugar (becauase I rarely eat sweets, don’t eat pasta, potatoes, corn, or peas, and if I have bread or rice its low carb, high fiber bread or brown rice) my blood sugar would spike a lot more dramatically frpm drinking straight glucose.

I don’t see my Dr. until after the test so should I just wait till I get the results from her and then if they’re high tell her about my diet and show her the journal I’ve been keeping on my home blood sugar monitoring? (And if they’re not high just say nothing?)

Has anyone else ever failed the first test and passed the second? Or failed because of a low carb diet?

I just need a little advice and/or reassurance.
Thanks in advance for your answers.

admin answers:

Hey,

Something happen to me too and I freaked out and was crying and everything since my family has diabetes on both sides of the family. So I had went back in and took the 3 hr test and passed it. But just a heads up bring something to eat for after you are done doing the three hour test. Its not that bad really but the stuff you have to drink is double the sugar then the 1st test. Try not to throw it up or you will have to go back in a different day and do it again. When I was finish with my 3 hr about 20 mins later my husband and I went to the store since I was feeling fine and by the time I got to the store and walked in I almost passed out because my blood level dropped really fast thats why I say to get something to eat right after you are done testing.

I wouldn’t worry to much about it. Come to find out that there are allot of women fail the 1st test then pass the second one. Also for the diet and everything don’t change anything you are doing til the test comes back but I am sure you will be just fine.

Good luck and let me know how they come out.

Your Questions About Sugar Spike After Eating

Susan asks…

What’s the cause of that sugar spike/hunger feeling you get right after eating?

admin answers:

Gas, it makes your stomach fuller and expanding, and this makes you think it’s hunger. Eat slowly, it doesn’t happen so much, also it happens more when you eat fibre.

Sandy asks…

drinking water after eating much sugar helps?

hi i was wondering if drinking water right after eating alot of sugar helps with either lowering sugar spike or at least slow down the digestion of sugar?

admin answers:

Just dont eat so much sugar

William asks…

Eating sugar after a workout?

Im 16 and taken protein post workout for a while but have recently discovered the importance of sugar to get an insulin spike after a hard workout. There is a drink available with 50g of sugar as well as 25g of protein which I am considering buying. However, in my family there is a history of high blood pressure, so would taking such high amounts of sugar be harmful to my health? thanks.
I am looking to bulk up. sorry i didnt mention it! thanks

admin answers:

Eat natural sugars found in fruits, and simple whole grain carbs. Don’t buy into fad drinks, except Gatorade if you sweat a lot. Lay off the starchy, white foods, they mess with your blood sugar levels. Eat steady, small meals throughout the day. You don’t need to add sugar, you need to regulate the sugar already in your body.

Mandy asks…

Is 109 high after eating 2 hours ago?

I’ve been feeling a little faint after a couple hours after eating. But I just checked my sugar level and it was 109. Is this high?

A little back ground. I had gestational diabetes so I know what it feels like for my sugar to spike low. I feel a little faint and thought maybe I had low blood sugar. After I had my baby the diabetes went away but they always say that you might have it later in life. I just want to make sure that I don’t for the mean time.

thanks for your experiences and advice.

admin answers:

Very good num, keep it up.

Jenny asks…

Does anyone get burning skin? It’s from my knees down, and it feels like fire. Could this be a sugar problem?

I am not diabetic (so the dr says) but my sugar has been over the limit forever. Now lately my blood sugar is spiking after I eat, but within 20 min or so.
One day I could eat something and my sugar can be 180, and the next day I could eat the same exact meal and it will be 140.
Either way I am spilling sugar into my urine, and also they found protein (24 hr protein test).

What do you think about this?

admin answers:

Sure sounds like diabetic neuropathy to me. I would say you need to do as I have done and learn more about diabetes than doctors and take better care of yourself. No one else can do a better job than you. Here’s more:

Your Questions About Bmi Chart Female Healthy

George asks…

5’6″ 115lbs 15 year old?

I know from a BMI chart this weight is just barely on the healthy zone for my height. I was 130 pounds last summer, and I got comments here and there that I was “fat.” It really affected my body image so I changed my diet and started working out 3-6 days a week and I lost 15 pounds. I also have softball a lot. Everyone tells me how good I look, whatnot. But everynow and then I get the occasional “your too skinny” comment. Personally I am pretty satified with my body, sometimes I wish I had a little more meat on my arms and less on my butt and thighs, but hey such is life. Just from a different person’s perspective I want to know is 115 pounds for a 5’6″ 15 year old female a good weight? And I tried to put on a pound or too but it doesn’t seem to want to happen…

admin answers:

I’m you’re height and age maybe an inch taller and I think 112 is the best weight, 105-120 is good though. So I’d say maintain, don’t lose or gain.

Sandy asks…

Effective exercises to lose weight?

Right, I want to drop a few pounds to slim down a bit. I am meant to be a ‘healthy weight’ according to BMI charts, however I am at the higher end of okay at 123lbs at the height of 5’3″s. I don’t have ‘rolls’ of fat, in fact my stomach oddly appears to be perfectly fine (just needs toning (; ) but my legs are a bit chubby (my mum even admitted that, reluctant as she was), my arms are a tiny bit, and my hips have a bit; mainly it is my legs though.
I am an asthmatic, who’s asthma is often triggered by the damp and exercise. I am very unfit, and have gotten worse over the years (I am talking a running 14.3 in 100ms to now 17.5 in it and on a drier ground) so I need to gradually build up my fitness levels preferably something that can be started inside. I don’t have access to a swimming pool (plus I am a weak swimmer), I would love to run outside however it is nearing winter and very wet, meaning damp and exercise with low fitness=asthma attack and can’t afford a gym member ship.
I recently rejoined my schools Hockey team, which I do for an hour twice a week, also in my final school year I can now go up town which involves walking up a steep hill, which I now need to walk up and down to go to and fro school as recently moved, which brings me to my next point of having stairs (we had none before lol!) so I was wondering if stair climbing would be a good idea? Though I know it can be damaging to ones knees.
Okay and some final smaller bits of information are, I am a 16year old female, who lives in near by town (recent), eats a balanced diet generally, but has a habit of snacking (which I could cut out… But I’d rather exercise my fat away rather than alter my diet) and can spare between 20minuets-hour of exercise a day- hopefully, if I try.

So, can anyone suggest some good exercises taking into consideration the information I have given?

admin answers:

Walking up and down the stairs is good exercise and if you’re not overdoing it, your knees will be fine.
Snacking is not bad at all… You can snack whenever you want, just make sure that your snacks are healthy and low in calories. Fruits and veggies is the best choice.
I have asthma too so i think i can help you. You can try dancing! It’s fun and you burn calories… It’s not necessary to join a dance class. Just take your ipod and start dancing with your fave songs. Another exercise that i love and it’s alright for asthma is biking. It is also a cardio exercise which means that it helps you burn fat-calories. Moderate biking is good for your heart too.
Good luck!

Thomas asks…

im 13 years old and i need to loose 20 pounds ?

now before you say that im only 13, my doctor has told me countless times i need to loose weight because its simply bad for my health so using a bmi chart i need to loose 20 pound just to be in the bottom of the “overweight” range. Working out is a big challenge considering my stomach gets in the way of sit-ups and pretty much any other exercise i try :( I just want to be healthy and im tired of kids calling me a “whale” or a “fat cow”. I really need help ! what can i do, im 5′ flat and 150 pounds FEMALE.

admin answers:

Losing 10 lbs a month is a good and safe target. Any faster weight loss is likely to be temporary only and in most cases you regain it all.

Running, jogging, cycling, swimming, dancing, push ups, sit ups, squats, brisk walking and power walking all help for weight loss but dieting helps more.

One of the healthiest weight loss diets is the DASH diet.

The healthy DASH diet can help you lose weight safely and effectively, lower your cholesterol and lower your blood pressure.

It is based on an eating plan rich in fruits and vegetables, and low-fat or non-fat dairy, with whole grains. It is a high fiber, low to moderate fat diet, and is rich in potassium, calcium, and magnesium.

You can see further details in a web search for “dash diet” + “lose weight”.

Donald asks…

tips for losing weight over the summer?

hmm… so i’m 15 years old, female, and only 5’1″… and chances are that i wont be growing anymore.

just a couple of years ago, i was only about 90 pounds… and im not sure why, but.. i wound up gaining 30 pounds… so now im at 120… i’m not very athletic at all… i havent grown at ALL since then, neither has the shape of my body changed…

soo the goal is to weigh about 100-105 pounds by the end of summer (August 26th)…

i knoww that 120 is like.. a “healthy weight” according to the bmi charts, but the thing is, i’m naturally kinda small.. so being 120 pounds does actually make me look big.

umm yea so basically, i want to know if its a realistic goal..

so i get the point about doing cardio exercise daily… would going on the elliptical machine for ~ 40 minutes be enough?? or should i try doing more than that…???

there are no nearby parks or anything for me to run in… nor do i have a swimming pool… and i cant drive either! so im stuck at home for the most part…

some other things, umm i drink coffee with a lot of milk and sugar in it in the morning.. so my plan was to eliminate that… i HATE drinking black coffee though… could anyone point me to a more healthy substitute?? =P (that’s actually good…) idk something that’d wake me up too preferably.

so yeppperzz any advice would be amazing.. =)

<3

admin answers:

Yeah your goal is realistic as long as you do it healthily :)
As far as coffee, I drink mine with sweet-n-low. Lots and lots. Haha..I hate it black too. 40 minutes of cardio a day would be great. Also, there are exercise videos on youtube that you can do since you’re stuck at home. Good luck! =)

Carol asks…

I’m skinny now but, I look disgusting.?

I’ve recently lost a lot of weight, the healthy way go me! It took a little over a year but I’ve lost 80 pounds. Going from 220 too, 140. I’m in a healthy weight range now, even though I’m still on the meatier side of average, according to BMI charts. I’m 5’5, In case you’re curious. The thing that puzzles me is I’m starting to look really bony, If I loose anymore weight I will look so disgusting. I have a really wide rib cage and now that I’m much thinner it kind of sticks out. I don’t like it and actually liked my midsection more when I was around 150. My shoulders look awful, I look like a skeleton. All the bones around my neck are so obvious. I don’t want to be unhealthy but, loosing anymore weight isn’t really an option considering, the way I’ll look. I really want to put on 10 pounds to get back up to 150. Obviously I don’t mean eating cheese burgers but, I really think I would look much better despite being in a less desirable weight zone. What do you guys think. Anyone else pretty wide framed, and self conscious about the way the look at an average female weight?
lose*** sorry, I know that’s obnoxious.
@ Alice, It was really simple. I eat healthy now, I don’t limit myself though. If I want french fries, I’ll eat french fries. I mean, not everyday but you can’t stop eating things you like. I’ve kicked a really nasty soda habit. I eat a small salad with tons of veggies before lunch and dinner to fill up a little before I indulge myself, and it helps a lot. I exercise regularly, 6 day’s a week I do Cardio, 3 day’s I do an hour and 10 minutes, 3 day’s I do 40 minutes with 30 minutes of strength training. I also make sure to include a 10 minute warm up which is usually jumping rope and stretching, and a cool down with is stretching and relaxing :)

Goodluck!

admin answers:

I say that there is someone out there for everybody. Society now a days brainwashes people to lose a lot of weight, and sometimes take drastic option to lose weight. In my opinion I would say that you should try to gain a little more weight and get yourself in the between thick and skinny. Am sure you would look gorgeous if you gain a lil bit of more weight. After you gain some, try to maintain it, so you dont look that skinny and bonny

I would love some advice on how to lose the extra weight, and whats a healthy time frame, from your personal experiences. please no negative comments

admin answers:

Loosing weight fast is always an unhealthy thing.
There are many diets who tell you that you can loose a lot of weight in no time. And it is working, but you are doing no good to your body. And there’s also the Jojo-effect.
The best thing to lose and hold a healthy weight is healthy food, less sugar, lots of drinking water, and sports.
Diet has to begin in your head. And you already started to think about your nutrition. That’s an important step. It is too easy just to make a magazine-diet for 2-3 weeks and loose some weight. But it will come back soon again. If you are over-thinking your nutrition and activity, you will have a constantly good result. Isn’t that much better and healthier than a crash-diet ?

admin answers:

Anything that mixes high fat with high sugar. Croissants smeared with frosting for example would be perfect, premium ice cream works, heck sugary sodas are awesome in keeping blood sugar elevated AND you don’t quench your hunger so you eat more.
