Possible but before you throw it out you should know that when you don’t eat on schedule, your liver releases glycogen for energy and burns that . Thus your blood Sugar can go up even when you haven’t eaten a meal.

Tummy pain after colonoscopy/endoscopy. 15 ): help ?

Hi,
So yesterday (wednesday) I got an endoscopy/colonoscopy (was given general anesthesia). Well, at first after waking up (was in recovery for 1.5 hours) I felt great and wanted to just to home but then in the car I started feeling really nauseous and in pain. In the hospital I ate a little bit of a Popsicle but not much at all. Well the first few times I went to the bathroom I had blood (I still now have miralax in me and everything I’ve tried to eat comes right out) and so the pain is still there and hurts a lot. When I walk I’m a bit shaky but okay. Yesterday though I felt like I was going to pass out so I went and sat down and drank some juice to spike my blood sugar and was okay (I’ve passed out twice in the past year-one at Cortisone shot and one getting bloodwork so I know what it feels like before hand)
Well what should I do?
15, female.
Thanks!

admin answers:

Other than passing blood, the nausea, bloating and cramping are know effects of consuming Miralax or other polyethylene glycol (PEG3350) based laxatives. When used as a prep it can take several days to clear the system. It is not normal to pass blood unless the doctor failed to verify the bleeding was stopped after removing a polyp or the doctor accidentally caused some bleeding.

I am always awake for my colonoscopy and I can say for fact my doctor doesn’t leave the area where she takes a sample until she sees that any bleeding is stopped. I have never passed blood after a colonoscopy and I have been through this 5 times and always had polyps removed. Also, I have never experienced the effects of PEG3350 because I always insist on a different bowel prep.

Call your doctor as passing blood does not sound normal..

Mary asks…

I have severe burning on the skin of my legs. Please read below.?

Someone mentioned it could be from blood sugar. I do get sugar spikes about 1/2hr after eating, but normal fasting sugar (little above 100).
The odd thing is, the burning doesn’t stay that way, it turns on and off at different times. It seems to come from using my legs or when the skin stretches when I use my legs.
I also get burning on my feet sometimes too, just from my shoe rubbing. If I walk with no shoes on, I get the pins and needles feeling.
Any ideas?
Thanks

admin answers:

Perhaps PVD or PAD….i know my mothers legs burn and hurt when she walks or is on her feet at all….but her PVD is really bad….don’t know if this helps. Certainly couldn’t hurt to mention it to your doctor.

PAD-Peripheral Artery Disease

Ken asks…

Will my boyfriend ever grow up?

My boyfriend and I have been together almost two years. When we first met, he was 17 and I was barely 18, so we were both pretty immature. Over the last two years, though, I feel like I’ve progressed and he’s stayed the same, or maybe even gotten worse. The way he acts has irritated me for a while, but it never really was too big of an issue. We moved in together (some other roommates live with us too) in December, and everything is coming to light.

He is 19 now, and still refuses to take responsibility for himself. Everything that happens to him is someone else’s fault. One recent example: He is an insulin dependent diabetic. He rarely checks his blood sugar and takes his insulin when he “feels he needs it”. He does not keep back up insulin at our house, instead he keeps it at his grandmothers house. So two weeks ago he ran out of insulin. At 10 am he took the last 30 units from the vial. He had work at six. Instead of choosing to go get some more insulin, he sat around and played video games all day until the very last minute when he had to leave. After being at work for no more than 30 minutes, and drinking 3 cups of cherry coke, his blood sugar spiked over 650. He asked for a break, and the manager said he could have five minutes to call someone to bring insulin, but that he really needed him to work because it was busy. So my boyfriend goes to the break room and sits down for about 15 minutes. A manager comes and finds him and tells him he has to get back to work, and he is appalled by this and walks out and quits. Now, to me, if I had to place blame, I think it’s obviously his fault for either not having extra insulin here or not going to get some. But to him, the manager is just an a**hole and it’s completely their fault he had to quit and he thinks there is nothing he could’ve done different to make the situation work out differently.

His dad pays for his gas and car insurance. When he’s out of gas and can’t get in touch with his dad, he freaks out. I often ask him why he can’t put gas in his own car, even a gallon or two until he can get with his dad, and he just looks at me like I’m stupid. When we first moved in, his dad loaned him money to pay the first month’s rent. Instead of paying rent with it, my boyfriend blew through the money and spent it on whatever the hell he wanted. He went back to his dad to ask for more, and instead of being told no, his dad handed it over without even a slap on the wrist, then told him not to worry about paying any of it back. Our bills were due the 25th. When we got them, I went ahead and paid them in full because I was able to, then told the other roommates what their portion was. The others all paid me within 24 hours. He still says he doesn’t have the money to pay me; however, he DOES have money to eat out every single night. Now that he’s quit his job, instead of searching for a new one, he lays around on his butt all day. To his credit, he is in college and goes to classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. But, he doesn’t keep up with his reading or his assignments, then when he doesn’t do well he blames it on the teacher for not knowing what they’re doing. He also will not help around the house. There are piles of trash everywhere where he just throws his trash down and keeps doing what he’s doing. If I ask him to help me clean up, he says he will, but he never does. Monday night, around 5 pm, I asked him if he could unload the dishwasher before his class the next morning. He said he could, however it’s still sitting there, waiting to be unloaded. I remind him in a polite, non-nagging way every day and he apologizes and says he’ll do it…but he doesn’t.

If I say anything about any of this, he turns into a five year old and has a big hissy fit, saying things like “No one appreciates what I do!” “I work so hard and no one sees that, they only see when I mess up!” “I don’t know what else I can do for you, I’m clearly doing all I can.”

He is also 100% a freeloader. Everywhere, everytime. If you say no to him, he has a fit. I, myself, am barely making ends meet between my job, school, and paying the bills, but I AM making it. If we go somewhere, usually when it’s food, he always asks me to get him something, usually he wants to spend 10 or 15 dollars. He has more than enough money himself, because his dad keeps handing it over for no reason. If I tell him I’m not able to get him anything it is a huge deal, and I’m a terrible person. But if I ask him to buy me something, or even to loan me the money until we get back home because I forgot my purse, the answer is haha no every time.

This is all very frustrating for me. We were raised completely different ways, and it confuses me to watch him do the things he does, or to see his parents just give him things for no reason, generally when he’s actually done somethi

Anyone fail 1hr. Glucose Challenge Test…?

and then pass the 3hr? (For gestational diabetes)

I failed the first one, but I also didn’t fast for it like the lab says to because my Dr. told me not to.
Now I have to go in for the 3hr. one (which sucks) and I’m concerned I’m going to fail, even tho I know I don’t have gestational diabetes because I’ve been monitoring my blood glucose with a meter at home for the last 2 days and its been completely normal.
The thing is, I read somewhere that low-carb diets can affect the test. Well I’m on a low-carb diet but they never asked me that when they did the test. And if my body isn’t used to taking in that much sugar (becauase I rarely eat sweets, don’t eat pasta, potatoes, corn, or peas, and if I have bread or rice its low carb, high fiber bread or brown rice) my blood sugar would spike a lot more dramatically frpm drinking straight glucose.

I don’t see my Dr. until after the test so should I just wait till I get the results from her and then if they’re high tell her about my diet and show her the journal I’ve been keeping on my home blood sugar monitoring? (And if they’re not high just say nothing?)

Has anyone else ever failed the first test and passed the second? Or failed because of a low carb diet?

I just need a little advice and/or reassurance.
Thanks in advance for your answers.

admin answers:

Hey,

Something happen to me too and I freaked out and was crying and everything since my family has diabetes on both sides of the family. So I had went back in and took the 3 hr test and passed it. But just a heads up bring something to eat for after you are done doing the three hour test. Its not that bad really but the stuff you have to drink is double the sugar then the 1st test. Try not to throw it up or you will have to go back in a different day and do it again. When I was finish with my 3 hr about 20 mins later my husband and I went to the store since I was feeling fine and by the time I got to the store and walked in I almost passed out because my blood level dropped really fast thats why I say to get something to eat right after you are done testing.

I wouldn’t worry to much about it. Come to find out that there are allot of women fail the 1st test then pass the second one. Also for the diet and everything don’t change anything you are doing til the test comes back but I am sure you will be just fine.

Good luck and let me know how they come out.

Your Questions About Child Obesity Essay Example

Joseph asks…

Is My College Application essay good enough?

My Rebirth

Looking back on the past five years of my life, I wonder how I ever came so far. How did that proud young Nazi, that staunch fascist and passion-led creature ever become the critical thinking feminist, cultural rebel, and amateur philosopher she is now? It may have begun in the invasion of Palestine in 1948, or even when my mother remarried, but the wheels were truly set in motion on August 23, 2006, the day my father died.
My parents had been an incongruous couple. My father, born in the mid-fifties to a protestant family of farmers, carefree and lighthearted, and my mother, a “beautiful exotic” as my paternal aunt called her, from Northwestern Africa, a devout Muslim, ambitious, passionate and always ready to vehemently contend with any who slighted her or voiced opinions contrary to her own. They were good for each other; they moderated each other, checking the other’s extreme tendencies.
My mother changed after his death; her scathing criticism intensified, her disdain for American culture turned into disgust and her political agenda turned extreme. Maybe it was the fact that after my father’s death his family cut ties with ours, or her inability to moderate herself, or some inner weakness within. Nonetheless, my father’s death marked my indoctrination into antisemitism and Islamic Fundamentalism.
Americans, my mother taught me, were selfish, promiscuous, fat, belligerent, stupid, and above all, irreligious. My father’s family was held as the prime example of American sinfulness. Their selfish individualism in abandoning us, Cousin Louise’s promiscuity with her illegitimate child, Cousin Cassie’s obesity, Uncle Joe’s aggressive foreign policy, Cousin Steven’s poor grades and work ethic, and their sinfully lenient approach to religion. Happy memories of my paternal family were slowly eroded by time, my mother’s lessons, and their absence. In time, I came to hate them as false devils that represented all evil in the world.
I worshiped my mother, her being the only person in the world that would die for me as she constantly reminded me. Her words were sacred truth. Jews were liars who invented the Holocaust to garner pity and invade Palestine, the only acceptable form of law was Islamic Sharia, women were meant to be obedient to men, and freedom of speech was the devil’s invention. I proudly brought her beliefs to school and accepted ostracism and loneliness to come home to her praise and welcoming arms. At twelve, I possessed the answers to all the great questions in life, needing only to ask my mother and I would be enlightened. It wasn’t until my mother’s remarriage that I would start questioning.
Her new husband was a chauvinist whom she slavishly obeyed. Suddenly I could no longer speak with my male friends, I was forbidden from listening to music, and my beloved art was destroyed. My mother disowned me when she learned I had called the authorities when her husband attempted to molest me. In the midst of my pain a single, rebellious thought occurred to me: my thoughts have value. The supernova of my mind was sparked by that single thought and from the dust I have been reborn an ignorant but pure individual. I do not regret the things I have experienced; otherwise I would never have changed. I have been unable to stop thinking: are my perceptions real? Can the individual exist without Society? Does anyone truly do good or evil sincerely? I don’t know these answers, along with many others, but I do know one thing: I will always pursue truth and there is no greater peace than the peace of truth.

Do you think this is good enough to get into Wellesley? I only have a 3.0 but I’ve always taken the most difficult classes and I got a perfect 800 on the reading section of the SAT and I’m the president of a philosphy club and a volunteer club.

admin answers:

Well, I learned a lot about your mother and that you don’t know what a “Nazi” is.

I don’t think that this is necessarily a bad topic, but this essay is poorly written and boring. The admissions office wants to know about *you,* not your mother. You have an awful lot going on here, but it’s all boring. You’ve basically made a laundry list of why your life sucked – not what admissions wants to see. Work on exemplifying the phrase “show, don’t tell.”

I agree with the above response that the introduction and conclusion are too abrupt. Work on getting all the pieces to fit together. Make one single point and stick with it. Ask some of your teachers or other people with good writing skills to help you proofread.

Laura asks…

College writing class argumentative essay: Should the gov. control the foods offered in schools?

Obesity in children is becoming a huge problem in our society today. The government is imposing specific laws to eliminate all fatty or sugar based foods (junk food!) in schools. For example; kids won’t be allowed to bring in cupcakes or cookies for their birthday treats anymore, etc. The cafeteria will not sell any type of sweets or fatty junk foods for lunch. Everything offered will be natural or fresh…no deep fried foods, pizza, ice-cream, candy bars, etc.
Do you think that the government should control this to help our kids learn about a healthier life style or should that be left up to the parent?

admin answers:

I think schools should serve nutritious food and snacks. They don’t need soda machines and all that. Schools should be teaching nutrition as part of overall learning, in that light no junk food should be sold by the school.
It would be great if everyone ate healthy.
Should the school chose a no junk for the classroom rule re: parties ect. Thats fine, but what parents chose to put in their childrens lunch sack should be entirely up to them.
The Gov. Should be for the people by the people, not parenting in spite of the parents.

Charles asks…

Is there any mistakes in this essay?? Please help me!?

Nowadays, junk food is gradually becoming a specific part of daily life and it is directly related to people’s health. Eating much of these foods causes obesity and premature death; especially foods with high fat, salt and sugar are harmful for children. However, some people argue that junk food is not the sole cause of health problems. In this essay, I intend to show that food manufacturers need to be forced to lower the fat, sugar and salt content in food to prevent dangerous consequences.

To begin with, in this era, people have the freedom to choose what they want to buy or eat and what is good for their body. In fact; most people have understood the danger of eating too much junk food which contains high amount of fat, sugar and salt; so why should the food manufacturers be forced to lower the fat, sugar and salt? The government does not need to make the decision for the consumers who have the ability to make their own choices. Furthermore, reducing the fat, sugar and salt content in food will make the food become tasteless. Consequently, people would try to eat more to satisfy their desire. For example, people would eat more than a sausage if the salt and fat content has reduced because they are not satisfied with these tasteless sausages. Thus, forcing food manufacturers to lower the fat, sugar and salt content in food may induce people to eat more.

Unfortunately, eating excessive junk food can have serious negative effects on people, young or old alike. In fact, the most common health problem is children being overweight resulting from taking excessive junk food. Currently, 17 percent of children in the world are obese. Many children like to eat processed, fatty and sweet foods nowadays such as chips, pies and candies. Children cannot stop eating these foods if they once get addicted to high sugar. Moreover, sugary drinks such as soft drinks are other causes of obesity. They are high in calories and contribute to weight problems. Therefore, forcing manufacturers to lower the fat, sugar and salt content in food is necessary.

More seriously, eating junk food is also one of the main contributing factors to the development of cancer. The body desires and needs certain vitamins and minerals to function properly. But, when you eat a poor diet with all kinds of junk food, you severely impair the body’s ability to fight off toxins and diseased cells. As a result, those cells can become cancerous. Furthermore, having unhealthy food causes premature deaths. People die too early these days because of poor nutrition, such as take away foods. Sooner or later food manufacturers have to be forced to lower the fat, sugar and salt in food to prevent cancer and unfortunate premature deaths.

All things considered, I am convinced that the government should force food manufacturers to lower the fat, sugar and salt content in food. The consumer, however, should learn to form healthy eating habits for life. If they do this, this confusion will come to an end.

admin answers:

First, I don’t see any spelling errors in the text.
But – the paper should be balanced with shorter sentences and longer sentences. If you notice, on almost every sentence you have a comma. You have also included many fillers. More seriously, however, all things considered, nowadays, to begin with, … All of these are fillers and there should be a better way to go about it.

You could go about it (the closing paragraph):
The eating habits plus bad lifestyle choices (exercise) are resulting in the deterioration of America. The consumer needs to learn how to form healthy eating habits for life. The government should also do more. There could be steps taken to monitor food manufacturers to lower fat, sugar, and salt content. Working with the manufacturers and consumers together, the future will be for a healthier America.

This is one way to go about it. It cuts out most of the fillers and gives you more sentences than the three you currently have.

Hope this helps!

I need help with my English essay ?

Value of Video Games

When I was the age of eight I got my first video game. I was hooked with the game so much that it became a big influence in my life. Everyday at lunch my friends and I would act out the characters of the games. This helped me develop my imagination because I was constantly thinking of about the games that I played. Video games actually got me into fantasy. This led to Harry Potter, which then eventually led to other books. Video games helped me in many ways and have been a huge influence on me when I was younger.

Video games can have the same amount of value as a movie or book. Most people stereotype video games as violent and addictive but that is not the case. Just as there are movies with morale messages and movies with nothing but action, there are video games with depth and video games with only blood and gore. This is what academics at London University’s institute of education have to say

Far from being an obesity-inducing, violence-promoting threat to society, as they are often portrayed, the games being played in bedrooms across the country during half term can be used in the classroom to help children learn concepts such as critical appreciation of narrative structure or character development which they might otherwise study in a novel… (Lucy Ward guardian.co.uk article http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2004/oct/27/schools.elearning)

Researchers, who presented their findings at a seminar in London last night, believe games deserve to be treated by schools with the same seriousness as books and films. Andrew Burn, the associate director of the children, youth and media centre, said: “Games are a cultural form that is just beginning to evolve and the evidence is they can be every bit as rich and complex and nuanced as a book or a film.”
(Lucy Ward guardian.co.uk article http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2004/oct/27/schools.elearning)

Children would be the part of our society that would be largely influenced by video games. They can get some math skills and reading skills out of video games which would help them in school. There are people who would say that video games at a young age will make children less focused and have a negative effect for them in school, and make them more violent, but it would be the other way around. Since children are influenced more easily then teenagers wouldn’t it make sense that educational video games could benefit children much more then it will a thirteen year old boy? Children are the part of our society that can benefit the most from video games. They are also the ones that are exceptionally influenced by video games just as much as TV or other forms of media can easily affect children.

There is also a major flaw in what parents can do and don’t do that can positively or negatively affect a child. Most parents do check the ESRB rating on the video game to see if it is appropriate for children to play, however most parents neglect to check the description on the back that might have given a game that rating. The rating is more of a guideline then a rule. Parents should check to see if the game would be appropriate for their child not by a letter on the box but by the description, because the ratings they give are not always correct. Some video games could have gotten a lower rating but others could have gotten a higher rating. There is also the rating E 10+ which people don’t see and treat it like an E rated game. For example parents are more lenient on the Ec-T ratings and don’t give them much thought but would you let a 13 year old play an M rated game? Then why would you let a 6 year old play an E 10+ game? This is what leads children to say such things as “I will frag you!” and “OWNED!”

Video games can also be very useful to older people as well. Brain age can keep your mind sharp, and can keep your brain functioning properly. They can also keep your reflexes in good shape as well because you would have to think fast in these games. Children are not the only people that can get something out of video games. Older people around the age of 65 plus can get use out of video games as well. Just the same way playing a piano can keep your mind sharp playing a video game can keep your mind sharp as well.

1UP: This is actually a game I would honestly buy a DS and the game and give them to my parents. They’re always doing the crossword puzzle, always doing the crap in the newspaper, they don’t play video games. But this is something I think they could get into and it’s non-stop, because there’s so much they can actually do with the memorization. Following this theme, Brain Age has been hugely successful in Japan, and marketed to an older audience, which is probably a big reason for part of its success. Are you planning on targeting a wider audience in the U.S. as well? Like, old people?
Matt: The answer is yes. Whereas if you took a Metroid, we would n

Mandy asks…

and here is da second part….plz help….?

heres the second part of the essay…plz help…suggestions will be taken into consideration…corrections….thanks

If fast food chains were to be banned, people still have the option of buying junk and fatty foods from supermarkets, school and workplace canteens, milk bars, vending machines, restaurants, convenient stores and many other places. Alternatively, they could just buy the ingredients needed for the recipe and make a fatty cheeseburger and chips at home. So banning fast food chains has no affect on obesity levels because people can still add a lot of oils and sugars to their foods at home. Especially homes with children, if the parents are not careful with what they feed their children, the children may be put at risk of developing obesity at a later stage in life. A child’s food decisions are highly influenced by what they see on television, in their homes, at school, in the media and by what they see as good food. Therefore, when the children are not around their parents or are at a place like school, they would be able to buy junk foods from the canteen. This is why it is so important for children to be educated about unhealthy foods and healthy foods at an early age to help them develop good eating habits. Consequently, people may already addicted to fast food and it may be difficult for them to avoid these foods, so they buy these foods at other stores that are not banned.

Prohibiting fast foods and fast food chains could increase the cravings of consumers who have already been addicted. People who try to quit smoking find it hard to give up the addictive substance, nicotine, so they just keep smoking because they are forcing themselves into thinking that they cannot have a smoke, which makes them want to smoke even more. Similarly, banning fast food chains will not stop people from buying or making these foods, they will find substitutes and consume them instead. In other words, if they cannot get their junk foods from a chain such as McDonalds, they will find another meal or pre-pared meal filled with oils, fats, preservatives and chemicals. Overall, if fast food chains are to be banned, it would just make consumers want it even more and there would be no differences because consumers will be continually trying to substitute in other fatty foods.

However, if fast food chains were to be banned, people would not have the chance to see advertisements or fast food restaurants, so they would not want it as much. In addition, people would learn not to eat fast food because it is not available to them and they would need to buy or cook their own food. This would be a healthier option because most fast foods contain high levels of sugar, fat, salt and preservatives, whereas home cooked meals would contain less sugars and fats and more nutrients and vitamins. For example, if you compare a Big Mac with homemade stir-fry, you can instantly see the difference. A Big Mac has two meat patties, mayonnaise, cheese and a couple of pieces of lettuce, but a stir-fry has a variety of vegetables, some meat and maybe some rice. Eventually, fast food will phase out and people will just learn to choose healthier options, but it may not be that easy or simple, it all starts with a good education on healthy and unhealthy foods.

To sum up, banning fast food chains will not necessarily reduce the obesity levels. There are other factors that contribute to obesity, such as the advancement of technology and little vigorous physical activity. There is not point enforcing a fast food ban when there are still supermarkets and milk bars that sell junk food, it is not as if the government can ban all stores of selling junk food, it would be too difficult, time consuming and money wasting. The money could go to more worthy causes such as education on this topic. Obesity levels probably will not change because people would still want their fatty foods and will try to substitute it with other junk foods. I believe that a ban on fast food chains such as McDonalds and KFC will not work, at the end of the day, it is the consumers’ choice to eat these types of foods.

Like I said, redundancy. You repeat a lot of what you already said.

And your conculsion “To sum up” is too informal.

You keep saying “physical activity…physical…physical…”
its driving me nuts, lol, not being mean.

But trust me, I always work with my teacher to correct my essays and even I always repeat stuff and he says that when he sees that a lot, and my paper is one of the lasts, he doesnt even bother making corrections. You just loose points, thats all.

So watch out for that.
Also.

Do this.
For each paragraph, write out the main points you have written. Not the ones you “meant” to say.
Cause you’ll notice, its not in order.
You jump around.
You have good arguments but they jump around.

In your conclusions “there is not point..”
sounds like your talking to your friend.
Try
“It would not be wise”
its like, act as if your the president and your giving a speech.
You have to be formal!

Your Questions About New Army Pt Test

Maria asks…

Does anyone know if the Army Rangers and special forces are going to adopt the new army pt test?

So the Army is currently trying to come out with a new pt test and since I,m going for the rangers I,m wondering how I can prepare for it or whether or not the elite units are going to change they’re pt tests as well.

admin answers:

Indeed, the folks in 75th Ranger Regiment have their RPAT, I’m can’t remember what the SF community has, although my friends with SF Support claim there’s a yearly or so ritual where they do some kind of advanced (or rather more events then the standard PU/SU/2-mile run) PT test. I’m not getting anything at my unit level as to when the new Big-Army PT test or physical training will become scripture, anyone have an idea about that?

Laura asks…

Well here it is the NEW NEW Army PT Test?

New PT test
More than 10,000 soldiers took a new physical training test in 2011, and you are likely to follow suit when the test becomes official in late 2012.

This will mark the first changes to the PT test since its inception in 1980. Officials are finalizing the details, but the new test will likely include:

• A 60-yard shuttle run.

• A two-minute rower.

• A standing long jump.

• Dead-hang pull-ups.

• A two-mile run.

Initial tests had a one-minute rower, push-ups instead of pull-ups and a 1½-mile run. Data collection and soldier input drove leadership to make the test tougher.

The Army is likely to add full body armor to the Army Combat Readiness Test, as well.

The ACRT incorporates sprinting, climbing drills and other high-intensity exercises that mimic the challenges soldiers face in combat. It kicks off with a 400-meter run with a weapon. This segues into an obstacle course with low hurdles, high crawls and over-under obstacles to test individual movement techniques. Soldiers then do a 40-yard casualty drag, followed by a 40-yard run with ammo cans atop a balance beam. Next comes point, aim and move drills, followed by a 100-yard ammo can shuttle sprint. Well there you have it push ups are out and replaced with pull ups with in one year from now. Sadly they are keeping the two mile run and not reducing that.
Does anyone know if this is really it or is this just another ” IDEA “

Looks fun…NOT.

The New Army PT test?

Hi everyone I was reading on line that since the Army is revising its PT doctrine that in 2011 it is going to result in a new PT test with different events. Now I was reading that the events that will be eleminiated are the sit ups and the long distance run ( which I assume they are talking about the two mile run ). Now does anyone know which events are going to be put in its place?

The reason I ask is because even though I am college now I will be graduating in Fall of 2012 and I plan to get back into the Army National Guard and since they really are changing the test I want to train to do well on the new one and obviously don’t bother with the one that is going out the door. Thanks for any feedback

Oh and as a sidenote I would think that this would be much bigger news then what its only gotten so far.
Honestly I just want to know if this is for real because I remember there was talk of this back in 2003 and they are saying that in this article it will happen in 2011 at some time. I mean I won’t lie I hate the two mile run and would be happy to do anything else in its place if thats what they say I have to do then that is what I will do but if they really are gonna change it then I want to get ready for it.

admin answers:

There has been talk of changing the Army PT test on and off since I came in 23 years ago. Train for what the standard is today.

George asks…

News on the New Army PT test?

Does anyone have any news on the new Army PT test? Also when is it supposed to come out?

admin answers:

Here’s a decent article on it

http://www.army.mil/article/54721/new-pt-test-to-get-at-least-6-month-trial/

There haven’t been any standards posted yet because it’s still in the trial phases.

Carol asks…

When is the new Army PT test suppose to start?

Just what it asks

admin answers:

There has been extensive testing to try to come up with scoring standards. It looks like that has been settled along with the events. The current report is that it could begin as early as FY 2013 (this Oct). I think it will probably be phased in and there will need to be a couple months of training and practicing for the events. I’m guessing that will happen during the next fiscal year with the new test becoming mandatory on Oct 1, 2013 (FY 2014).

Your Questions About Healthy Food Ideas

Paul asks…

What are some quick, easy, healthy food ideas for loosing weight?

What are some quick, easy, healthy food ideas for loosing weight? I am determined to loose weight for my last year of high school. I am starting a 60 minute walk every night. What is something healthy for breakfast, my lunch box, and snacks?

What are some really easy, healthy food ideas?

I’m 18, weigh around 135, and I’m 5’3. I have a lot of muscle so I don’t really look like I weigh that much, yet I still want to lose some weight. I exercise every day but fast food is much easier than having to fix something. Therefore, I would really appreciate some ideas for quick, easy, healthy meals or snacks!

Healthy food ideas for living in the truck with cooler?

I travel in the semi with my bf, we are gone for months at a time. We have a cooler and a place for dry foods in the fridge, but no microwave. I can heat water thru the small coffee maker we have. I need Ideas of what to put in the cooler that is healthy and easy to make. Not just snacks but meal ideas that will help fill me and lose weight! Please anything helps :)

admin answers:

Because you are ‘on the road’ I’d assume you can easily pick up daily food stuffs. So in the cooler I’d put things you’d use in a day or two that are ‘good buys’: lunch meats, cheeses, turkey bacon or breakfast protein of choice, prepared veggies for snacks or dipping, cheese spreads or dips for snacks. I’d have on hand: bread, crackers. I’d have cottage cheese, yogurt and fruits. Mixing the first two with later. Cooler or fridge. If for some reason you can’t get to store and want something warm and nourishing, have some ramen noodle soup and frozen or canned veggies.

You seem to imply you have a fridge, but freezer? Not certain. If you do, when at home make big portions of things you love to freeze. (chili, stew, soups). Save them for cold nights, thaw, heat. Enjoy!

Healthy food ideas on a max 70 dollars a week spending?

I’m trying to cut out fast food etc and I’m trying to eat healthier. I am on a bit of a budget and any food ideas for breakfast/lunch/dinner? and information would be appreciated!

admin answers:

Breakfasts:
Oatmeal cooked with apples (about $1.50)
Whole wheat toast & peanut butter & raisins (about $1.50)
Eggs, whole wheat toast, an orange (about $1.50)

(you can buy oatmeal and raisins in bulk for cheap)

Lunches:
Tuna & pasta (whole grain) & frozen vegetables
Whole wheat bread, cream cheese, tomato (or other vegetable) sandwich
Green salad with chickpeas, slivered almonds, raisins, mozzarella (I know greens are pricey but you need them every so often)

(frozen vegetable usu. Have no additives and are much cheaper than fresh)

Dinners:
Brown rice, beans, salsa, sour cream
Brown rice, chicken, frozen vegetables
Red lentil soup, homemade (cheap! Dired lentils & an onoin)
Whole gain pasta tossed with cheese, veggies, salad dressing
Whole grain tortilla with beans, lettuce, onions, salsa, chiken veggies, whatever you want

Good for you for cutting out fast food! You will be so glad you did! Try it after going one year without it—will literally make you sick–very telling, it’s horrible stuff!

In working with a tight budget, go to the bulk foods section for oats, rice, etc.

Best of luck to you!

Your Questions About Sugar Spike After Eating

Susan asks…

What’s the cause of that sugar spike/hunger feeling you get right after eating?

admin answers:

Gas, it makes your stomach fuller and expanding, and this makes you think it’s hunger. Eat slowly, it doesn’t happen so much, also it happens more when you eat fibre.

Sandy asks…

drinking water after eating much sugar helps?

hi i was wondering if drinking water right after eating alot of sugar helps with either lowering sugar spike or at least slow down the digestion of sugar?

admin answers:

Just dont eat so much sugar

William asks…

Eating sugar after a workout?

Im 16 and taken protein post workout for a while but have recently discovered the importance of sugar to get an insulin spike after a hard workout. There is a drink available with 50g of sugar as well as 25g of protein which I am considering buying. However, in my family there is a history of high blood pressure, so would taking such high amounts of sugar be harmful to my health? thanks.
I am looking to bulk up. sorry i didnt mention it! thanks

admin answers:

Eat natural sugars found in fruits, and simple whole grain carbs. Don’t buy into fad drinks, except Gatorade if you sweat a lot. Lay off the starchy, white foods, they mess with your blood sugar levels. Eat steady, small meals throughout the day. You don’t need to add sugar, you need to regulate the sugar already in your body.

Mandy asks…

Is 109 high after eating 2 hours ago?

I’ve been feeling a little faint after a couple hours after eating. But I just checked my sugar level and it was 109. Is this high?

A little back ground. I had gestational diabetes so I know what it feels like for my sugar to spike low. I feel a little faint and thought maybe I had low blood sugar. After I had my baby the diabetes went away but they always say that you might have it later in life. I just want to make sure that I don’t for the mean time.

thanks for your experiences and advice.

admin answers:

Very good num, keep it up.

Jenny asks…

Does anyone get burning skin? It’s from my knees down, and it feels like fire. Could this be a sugar problem?

I am not diabetic (so the dr says) but my sugar has been over the limit forever. Now lately my blood sugar is spiking after I eat, but within 20 min or so.
One day I could eat something and my sugar can be 180, and the next day I could eat the same exact meal and it will be 140.
Either way I am spilling sugar into my urine, and also they found protein (24 hr protein test).

What do you think about this?

admin answers:

Sure sounds like diabetic neuropathy to me. I would say you need to do as I have done and learn more about diabetes than doctors and take better care of yourself. No one else can do a better job than you. Here’s more:

Your Questions About Obesity Essays In America

Linda asks…

Writing an essay on Obesity in America. Please help!?

I’m homeschooled, and because of that, I’ve never really had a need to write essays that count for grades or anything. One of my friends is helping me by giving me writing assignments. I’m supposed to write a 500 word essay on Obesity in Ameria – only problem is, I have NO clue where to start!

How much of an essay is quoting other sources? And how much is my personal opinions? I honestly don’t even have any opinions on obesity, so where do I start?!

Any essay writing tips are GREATLY appreciated, and any more specific info to this particular essay as well. Thank you SO much!

admin answers:

Always have references. Even if it is on opinion, always try to be educated on the subject.
Here are some tips:
- One of the easiest forms of essays to write is the 5 paragraph essay. Have a topic paragraph, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.
– The topic paragraph should include your thesis, which is what you are trying to tell the reader, and should categorize it into 3 categories. Those will become your body paragraphs.
– In the body of the essay, try to always have at least 1 fact, and then explain it. You can have more, but always explain them.
– The conclusion should wrap up the essay. It shouldn’t be the thesis statement exactly, but restate it.
- When you use someone else’s information, you don’t have to quote them. Just be sure you reference whoever had the info. For example:
“The CDC did a research on obesity that shows…”
Although I never directly quoted the CDC, I did tell you they did the research.
- If you are writing an opinion essay, than all of the essay will be your opinion somehow.
- When you form the opinion, it doesn’t just have to be For/Against, or anything as black and white as that. If they just told you to write about Obesity in America, you can write about if its an epidemic, how can people change, and stuff like that.
- If you writer’s block, and you have don’t have to worry about running out of paper, just write. Someone I know told me this, and it works. Just write whatever comes to mind, no matter how stupid. Its a simple way to get rid writer’s block.
- Most important of all, DON’T STRESS! When you take a test, you will stress about writing. When you finish, you’ll find out that it wasn’t as bad as you thought it was.

Hope these tips could help you, and I’m sure you’ll do fine on the essay.

Ruth asks…

What is your honest opinion of obesity in America?

I have a project in my English class where I have to find out what people think about obesity. I was assigned to find out the NEGATIVE opinions of obesity. If you know of any truthful and somewhat harsh articles or essays just send me the link. Charts or graphs could work too. If you like, you can just state your opinion, that would be great, but preferably lengthy. :] Thank you

Is Denmark’s “fat tax” working to curb obesity?

Is Denmark’s “fat tax” working to curb obesity?I’m trying to write an essay on obesity in america, and I need to come up with some solutions. I want to put the “fat tax” in my essay as a solution, but I’m not sure if it’s actually working or not. I couldn’t find the answer online, so I came to you for help… So, has the fat tax worked in lowering obesity rates in denmark since it was enforced?

admin answers:

It is kind of hard to say, because the fat taxe have been here for less than half a year, but remember that the fat tax was never meant to curb obesity. Obesity isn’t a problem in Denmark the same way it is in USA. We are simply not that fat. Yet. Obesity is starting to become a problem, because people in general become heavier and heavier, so we have to build up hospital departments that take car of people with extreme obesity or obesity related deseases. That costs money(remember we have public healthcare), to get those money the fax tax was introduced. The idea behind it is simple. The more fat you buy the more you pay to tread obesity and obesity related diseases.

Lisa asks…

How many fast food restaurants are in America (Please help?)?

Your Questions About Bmi Chart Female Healthy

George asks…

5’6″ 115lbs 15 year old?

I know from a BMI chart this weight is just barely on the healthy zone for my height. I was 130 pounds last summer, and I got comments here and there that I was “fat.” It really affected my body image so I changed my diet and started working out 3-6 days a week and I lost 15 pounds. I also have softball a lot. Everyone tells me how good I look, whatnot. But everynow and then I get the occasional “your too skinny” comment. Personally I am pretty satified with my body, sometimes I wish I had a little more meat on my arms and less on my butt and thighs, but hey such is life. Just from a different person’s perspective I want to know is 115 pounds for a 5’6″ 15 year old female a good weight? And I tried to put on a pound or too but it doesn’t seem to want to happen…

admin answers:

I’m you’re height and age maybe an inch taller and I think 112 is the best weight, 105-120 is good though. So I’d say maintain, don’t lose or gain.

Sandy asks…

Effective exercises to lose weight?

Right, I want to drop a few pounds to slim down a bit. I am meant to be a ‘healthy weight’ according to BMI charts, however I am at the higher end of okay at 123lbs at the height of 5’3″s. I don’t have ‘rolls’ of fat, in fact my stomach oddly appears to be perfectly fine (just needs toning (; ) but my legs are a bit chubby (my mum even admitted that, reluctant as she was), my arms are a tiny bit, and my hips have a bit; mainly it is my legs though.
I am an asthmatic, who’s asthma is often triggered by the damp and exercise. I am very unfit, and have gotten worse over the years (I am talking a running 14.3 in 100ms to now 17.5 in it and on a drier ground) so I need to gradually build up my fitness levels preferably something that can be started inside. I don’t have access to a swimming pool (plus I am a weak swimmer), I would love to run outside however it is nearing winter and very wet, meaning damp and exercise with low fitness=asthma attack and can’t afford a gym member ship.
I recently rejoined my schools Hockey team, which I do for an hour twice a week, also in my final school year I can now go up town which involves walking up a steep hill, which I now need to walk up and down to go to and fro school as recently moved, which brings me to my next point of having stairs (we had none before lol!) so I was wondering if stair climbing would be a good idea? Though I know it can be damaging to ones knees.
Okay and some final smaller bits of information are, I am a 16year old female, who lives in near by town (recent), eats a balanced diet generally, but has a habit of snacking (which I could cut out… But I’d rather exercise my fat away rather than alter my diet) and can spare between 20minuets-hour of exercise a day- hopefully, if I try.

So, can anyone suggest some good exercises taking into consideration the information I have given?

admin answers:

Walking up and down the stairs is good exercise and if you’re not overdoing it, your knees will be fine.
Snacking is not bad at all… You can snack whenever you want, just make sure that your snacks are healthy and low in calories. Fruits and veggies is the best choice.
I have asthma too so i think i can help you. You can try dancing! It’s fun and you burn calories… It’s not necessary to join a dance class. Just take your ipod and start dancing with your fave songs. Another exercise that i love and it’s alright for asthma is biking. It is also a cardio exercise which means that it helps you burn fat-calories. Moderate biking is good for your heart too.
Good luck!

Thomas asks…

im 13 years old and i need to loose 20 pounds ?

now before you say that im only 13, my doctor has told me countless times i need to loose weight because its simply bad for my health so using a bmi chart i need to loose 20 pound just to be in the bottom of the “overweight” range. Working out is a big challenge considering my stomach gets in the way of sit-ups and pretty much any other exercise i try :( I just want to be healthy and im tired of kids calling me a “whale” or a “fat cow”. I really need help ! what can i do, im 5′ flat and 150 pounds FEMALE.

admin answers:

Losing 10 lbs a month is a good and safe target. Any faster weight loss is likely to be temporary only and in most cases you regain it all.

Running, jogging, cycling, swimming, dancing, push ups, sit ups, squats, brisk walking and power walking all help for weight loss but dieting helps more.

One of the healthiest weight loss diets is the DASH diet.

The healthy DASH diet can help you lose weight safely and effectively, lower your cholesterol and lower your blood pressure.

It is based on an eating plan rich in fruits and vegetables, and low-fat or non-fat dairy, with whole grains. It is a high fiber, low to moderate fat diet, and is rich in potassium, calcium, and magnesium.

You can see further details in a web search for “dash diet” + “lose weight”.

Donald asks…

tips for losing weight over the summer?

hmm… so i’m 15 years old, female, and only 5’1″… and chances are that i wont be growing anymore.

just a couple of years ago, i was only about 90 pounds… and im not sure why, but.. i wound up gaining 30 pounds… so now im at 120… i’m not very athletic at all… i havent grown at ALL since then, neither has the shape of my body changed…

soo the goal is to weigh about 100-105 pounds by the end of summer (August 26th)…

i knoww that 120 is like.. a “healthy weight” according to the bmi charts, but the thing is, i’m naturally kinda small.. so being 120 pounds does actually make me look big.

umm yea so basically, i want to know if its a realistic goal..

so i get the point about doing cardio exercise daily… would going on the elliptical machine for ~ 40 minutes be enough?? or should i try doing more than that…???

there are no nearby parks or anything for me to run in… nor do i have a swimming pool… and i cant drive either! so im stuck at home for the most part…

some other things, umm i drink coffee with a lot of milk and sugar in it in the morning.. so my plan was to eliminate that… i HATE drinking black coffee though… could anyone point me to a more healthy substitute?? =P (that’s actually good…) idk something that’d wake me up too preferably.

so yeppperzz any advice would be amazing.. =)

<3

admin answers:

Yeah your goal is realistic as long as you do it healthily :)
As far as coffee, I drink mine with sweet-n-low. Lots and lots. Haha..I hate it black too. 40 minutes of cardio a day would be great. Also, there are exercise videos on youtube that you can do since you’re stuck at home. Good luck! =)

Carol asks…

I’m skinny now but, I look disgusting.?

I’ve recently lost a lot of weight, the healthy way go me! It took a little over a year but I’ve lost 80 pounds. Going from 220 too, 140. I’m in a healthy weight range now, even though I’m still on the meatier side of average, according to BMI charts. I’m 5’5, In case you’re curious. The thing that puzzles me is I’m starting to look really bony, If I loose anymore weight I will look so disgusting. I have a really wide rib cage and now that I’m much thinner it kind of sticks out. I don’t like it and actually liked my midsection more when I was around 150. My shoulders look awful, I look like a skeleton. All the bones around my neck are so obvious. I don’t want to be unhealthy but, loosing anymore weight isn’t really an option considering, the way I’ll look. I really want to put on 10 pounds to get back up to 150. Obviously I don’t mean eating cheese burgers but, I really think I would look much better despite being in a less desirable weight zone. What do you guys think. Anyone else pretty wide framed, and self conscious about the way the look at an average female weight?
lose*** sorry, I know that’s obnoxious.
@ Alice, It was really simple. I eat healthy now, I don’t limit myself though. If I want french fries, I’ll eat french fries. I mean, not everyday but you can’t stop eating things you like. I’ve kicked a really nasty soda habit. I eat a small salad with tons of veggies before lunch and dinner to fill up a little before I indulge myself, and it helps a lot. I exercise regularly, 6 day’s a week I do Cardio, 3 day’s I do an hour and 10 minutes, 3 day’s I do 40 minutes with 30 minutes of strength training. I also make sure to include a 10 minute warm up which is usually jumping rope and stretching, and a cool down with is stretching and relaxing :)

Goodluck!

admin answers:

I say that there is someone out there for everybody. Society now a days brainwashes people to lose a lot of weight, and sometimes take drastic option to lose weight. In my opinion I would say that you should try to gain a little more weight and get yourself in the between thick and skinny. Am sure you would look gorgeous if you gain a lil bit of more weight. After you gain some, try to maintain it, so you dont look that skinny and bonny

John asks…

Can you trust the Clinton’s? You’ll be shocked?

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and her husband, the former president, liquidated a blind trust valued at $5 million to $25 million in April after learning that it included such investments as oil and drug companies and military contractors, her presidential campaign confirmed. ‘As a presidential candidate, Senator Clinton was required to make her assets public. As a result, she had to dissolve her blind trust,’ Howard Wolfson, a senior Clinton adviser, said late Thursday. ‘Upon its dissolution, she and the president chose to go above and beyond what was required of them and liquidate their assets in order to avoid even the hint of a conflict of interest.’” Would you like to hear what the investments were, ladies and gentlemen? Here we go: “several pharmaceutical companies,” Big Drug, “including Abbott Labs, Amgen, Genentech, Novartis, Pfizer and Wyeth, with assets in each company ranging from $100,001 to $250,000, The New York Times reported in Friday editions. Other assets included BP Amoco,” Big Oil, “Chevron Corp., ” Big Oil, ” Exxon Mobil Corp.,” Big Oil, ” Raytheon,” Big Defense contracts, “and Wal-Mart Stores Inc.”

So every industry and company that they demonize, they are invested in! (Or they were.) They have liquidated it, and I don’t believe this notion that it was in the blind trust and therefore — well, they had to know what they were invested in. “Blind trust” just means you don’t know how it’s doing, but they knew that this disclosure was coming up, and they were going to have to do this, and I don’t believe for a minute that the dissolution of the investments in these companies was for any highbrow reason of openness and sunshine and all that — it was to avoid charges of hypocrisy. I mean, here they are demonizing every one of these industries. In fact, during the health care attempt back in the early nineties, Mrs. Clinton was doing everything she could to trash these companies. I wondered back then if she was investing in pharmaceutical stocks and then selling short after driving the prices down, and I still don’t know. Who knows what’s been going on with any of that?

Anyway, according to these disclosure forms, their net worth is now approximately $50 million. They came to Washington with nothing. How does this happen? Clinton as president made 200 grand. Hillary as senator makes 60, 70, 80 — I don’t know. Clinton’s been out there doing speeches and they’ve written books and so forth, but we also know they have ties with some really strange people — like this Gupta guy — and they have ties with Dubai. In fact, Clinton was even helping Dubai lobby for the ports deal back when it happened! So this is just typical. These people, I’m telling you: everything they tell you is going to be wrong or is going to end up being in one degree or another a falsehood if you just sit around and wait. I mean, Wal-Mart, of all companies? She was acting embarrassed a while ago that she was on the Wal-Mart board! She was having to cover for that lately: “Well, that was in Arkansas a long time ago. I had to do that. I was in business down there. Wal-Mart was a big concern. But I left that board when I discovered that some practices that company was involved in were things I didn’t approve of.” How are you investing in Wal-Mart stocks, then? With some of their hard-earned cash that they have earned since the Clintons left the White House in January of 2001? There’s only one industry that they have not invested in — and that’s because they own it — and that’s Big Hypocrite.

admin answers:

Apparantly you don’t know what a “blind trust” is, “blind” being the operative word, meaning they don’t make any decisions about where the money is being invested or even have any knowledge of where it is invested. — and when they found out they where the money was going they divested —

Also, they came to Washington with nothing? BS Hillary was a lawyer in private practice for years and made plenty of money and I’m sure Bill had some money –

But Trust any politician, no.

Helen asks…

Marine Corp Lieutenant suppose to be honorable but how can someone with no moral make to be a military officer?

Here is my story, I hope someone could help me.
I dated a marine corp officer for 1.5 years we know each other for 5 years prior to that. When we first start dating. I had a good job, he hasn’t got his commission so he was waiting without a job. He was selling all his belongings to make ends meet. I felt bad for him so I paid for his rent. It lasted a couple month. He swore to me he will pay me back. he keep on telling me how honorable military officers have to be. He will never do anything to hurt me. I trusted him since I know him for so long,. By the way i paid roughly 2.5k. I was totally love blind at the time. After his commision, he could not stop spend all of his pay check every month on guns, car equipments and other misc. I didn’t push too hard to get my money back cause he had none also i didn’t want to sour the relationship. So TBS (9 month) pass by, IFS I start to try to give him some financial advice and he told me that I suffocate him. But other than money everything was great. Everything changed when he went to pensacola. I changed my job so I can be around him more often. with all the travel from my job and accomodating to his schedule. I was extremely stressed. We start to have fights. he begin to become aloof. Then during xmas I found out he was cheating on me and had another gf. His reason was I have changed and i wasn’t who he thought I was. In fact even in virginia he had an profile up in match.com. I was dumb found and shocked. To add fire to all this I found out I was pregnant. I am think oh great he is going to think I am trying to keep him. He told me he wants nothing to do with me nor the baby. I agree to have an abortion but I want him to be there when I do it. Since it takes two. He agree to come but 2 month pass by and nothing. I was getting desperate. one day he calls me out of blue and told me he needs paper work saying i am pregnant, Because he doesn’t believe the child is his or I am pregnant. but later I found out appearantly he has been too stressed from our situation to do well in API. He has been failing tests and command has put him on hold. he said he will drive back and he wants a sonogram. I was furious. he came back and it happen to snow that weekend and all doctors office closed. Just his luck. He didn’t contact me and left town. My doctor said I will not be healthy enough to carry the baby to term so I finally got the abortion. I am in pretty bad health from all the drama. Now someone please help me:
1. How can i get my money back, it was really all words, he was smart about it.
2. Can I do something about the way he is treating me. I am seriously concerned about his moral as a leader. He will lead marines into war.

I was so love drunk. I may not be the best military gf, but I wished he has educated me. I don’t have any family member from the military. But I don’t deserve to be this screwed. I need some advice. Thank you so much

Why is Obama slamming health insurance profits? Don’t they have profit margins of 3 to 4%?

Over the past year, “the profit margin for health insurance companies was a modest 3.4 percent,” Newman points out, quoting data provided by Morningstar, a company that rates mutual funds. Morningstar would have no reason to low-ball the insurance industry’s profits; its readers are looking for highly profitable sectors of the economy where they can invest. But the health plan industry is not one of those sectors: insurers ranks 87th out of 215 industries.

The most profitable industry over the past year has been
- beverages, with a 25.9 percent profit margin,
- healthcare real-estate trusts (firms that are basically the landlords for hospitals and healthcare facilities)
- application-software (think Windows).
- oil and gas industry overall was 10.2 percent, three times the margin in the health insurance industry.
- high-fliers like Google—which had a 20.6 percent margin
- Microsoft, at 24.9 percent.
- Pharmaceutical companies 16.4 percent

Amgen (biotechnology): Profit margin, 30.6 percent
• Gilead Sciences (biotechnology): 37.6 percent
• Celgene Corp. (biotechnology): 11.9 percent
• Johnson & Johnson (drug manufacturer): 20.8 percent
• Pfizer (drug manufacturer): 16.3 percent
• GlaxoSmithKline (drug manufacturer): 17.4 percent
• Unitedhealth Group (healthcare plans): 4.1 percent
• WellPoint (healthcare plans): 4 percent
• Aetna (healthcare plans): 3.9 percent
• MedcoHealth Solutions (healthcare services): 2.1 percent
• Express Scripts (healthcare services): 3.7 percent
• Quest Diagnostics (healthcare services): 8.7 percent
• Medtronic (medical equipment): 14.9 percent
• Baxter International (medical equipment): 17.5 percent
• Covidien (medical equipment): 12.3 percent

Melissa – using data from the AFL/CIO is tainted. MorningStar is an organization who monitors and rates investments. I would not believe the AFL/CIO numbers.
DSTR – We are not talking CEO compensation. We are talking overall profit margins. If he made $1 million, would $2 million impact profits all that much?
Hey mental case – I think you named yourself appropriately. I am not Paul Grass regardless of how many times you say it. You sound like Obama making false accusations about insurance industry profits.

admin answers:

It’s harder for the government to take over a business if it’s actually making a profit. Obama is slamming profits because he does not understand basic economics and he has a socialist agenda. He either does not care or does not realize that insurance companies are not generally non-profit businesses (though some are) and have a responsibility to their share holders. But he WANTS them to fail, because that would make it easier for him to push through the type of healthcare reform that nobody who would actually have to subscribe to it wants. Instead of making changes to restrictive regulations that prevent people from having broad choice, options and pricing in health insurance as they do in other insurance sectors, which would bring prices down and increase quality as people could choose for themselves not to use an insurance company that unethically denies valid claims, he wants to force everyone to have LESS choice and give up MORE control of their health to the government. Those of you complaining about how the insurance companies deny certain things for the sake of profit, just wait until (god forbid) the government gets to make those decisions.

Car insurance companies are profitable. The ones that aren’t go out of business. But we have almost endless choice and can compare policies and freely and individually choose what works best for us. And you don’t here people complaining en masse about the car insurance industry as a whole…if you don’t like your provider, you change. I don’t know why Obama is looking to other countries’ healthcare systems that do not work instead of other systems within the U.S. Free market that do work.

Sandy asks…

Does it bother you that 95% of all American media is owned by only six corporations?

Those would be:
General Electric
Walt Disney
News Corp.
Time Warner
Viacom
and CBS

With General Electric’s ties to the Obama administration (and govt contracts), and News Corp‘s submission to Monsanto in suppression of information on rBGH,
can we really trust the media at all?
Would MSNBC tell us we need to buy GE lightbulbs to save the planet?
Would Fox News omit other public health stories because of corporate pressure?

Sources/editorials for all claims in this question (research them yourselves if none of these sources meet your credibility requirements. I tried to pick articles from all over the political spectrum. There’s plenty of info out there):

http://www.inmotionmagazine.com/fox.html

http://www.freepress.net/ownership/chart/main

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,520548,00.html

No, Pixie. News Corp is not a “liberal corporation.” This is not a partisan issue.
@Billy: LOL. You sure showed me. I should take a lesson on debate from you. When people ask honest questions it’s best to respond simply with “You’re dumb.” Got it. Great job. I wish I could be you, sir.
@PeaceThruBlindingForce: I don’t want one owner. I’m complaining that six is too few, not too many.

admin answers:

Sure, these media outlets are going to act in the best interests of their corporate masters, that is a foregone conclusion. Actually, however, 6 different ones is not that bad relatively speaking. Most people probably don’t realize that a majority of their prepackaged food comes from 1 of only 3 companies…Kraft, Pepsico, and Nestle. You will notice that most products and services in this country are controlled by basically an oligopoly. Not that I am defending that, I would love to see more competition, but just pointing out that it does not surprise me that the media is the the same way.

Your Questions About Bmi Formula For Men

David asks…

can you estimate my body fat %?

my stats are:
16 year old male
5″9 or 70.1inch
150lb or 68kg
bmi 22.1
waist 29″
neck 14.75″
moderately active (exercise 3-5 days per week)

If you enter those stats into this formula here you get 9.09%
Body Fat Formula For Men
Factor 1(Total body weight x 1.082) + 94.42
Factor 2Waist measurement x 4.15
Lean Body MassFactor 1 – Factor 2
Body Fat WeightTotal bodyweight – Lean Body Mass
Body Fat Percentage(Body Fat Weight x 100) / total body weight

where bodyweight is in lb’s and waist is in inches

or if you enter them into this formula here(link) you get 9.09% as well

http://www.bmi-calculator.net/body-fat-calculator/

or this formula(link) you get 6.72%

I know that the only accurate way of getting my bf% is hydrostatic weighing but im not quite sure if they have it in my country (NZ).

Do you have any advice of getting my abs to become more visible?
Should I continue to lower my bf%? or Do ab exercises to make the muscle bigger?

If I should do ab exercises which ones would you recommend??

Full answers if possible please

admin answers:

Your abs are really scrawny. Beef them up, but lose the love handles. I’d say diet a little bit and mainly work lower abs and just ab strength. Ab wheels, leg raises, hanging leg raises, etc

Mary asks…

Reasons why bmi cant be trusted for those who use it still?

1. The person who dreamed up the BMI said explicitly that it could not and should not be used to indicate the level of fatness in an individual.

The BMI was introduced in the early 19th century by a Belgian named Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet. He was a mathematician, not a physician. He produced the formula to give a quick and easy way to measure the degree of obesity of the general population to assist the government in allocating resources. In other words, it is a 200-year-old hack.

2. It is scientifically nonsensical.

There is no physiological reason to square a person’s height (Quetelet had to square the height to get a formula that matched the overall data. If you can’t fix the data, rig the formula!). Moreover, it ignores waist size, which is a clear indicator of obesity level.

3. It is physiologically wrong.

It makes no allowance for the relative proportions of bone, muscle and fat in the body. But bone is denser than muscle and twice as dense as fat, so a person with strong bones, good muscle tone and low fat will have a high BMI. Thus, athletes and fit, health-conscious movie stars who work out a lot tend to find themselves classified as overweight or even obese.

4. It gets the logic wrong.

The CDC says on its Web site that “the BMI is a reliable indicator of body fatness for people.” This is a fundamental error of logic. For example, if I tell you my birthday present is a bicycle, you can conclude that my present has wheels. That’s correct logic. But it does not work the other way round. If I tell you my birthday present has wheels, you cannot conclude I got a bicycle. I could have received a car. Because of how Quetelet came up with it, if a person is fat or obese, he or she will have a high BMI. But as with my birthday present, it doesn’t work the other way round. A high BMI does not mean an individual is even overweight, let alone obese. It could mean the person is fit and healthy, with very little fat.

5. It’s bad statistics.

Because the majority of people today (and in Quetelet’s time) lead fairly sedentary lives and are not particularly active, the formula tacitly assumes low muscle mass and high relative fat content. It applies moderately well when applied to such people because it was formulated by focusing on them. But it gives exactly the wrong answer for a large and significant section of the population, namely the lean, fit and healthy. Quetelet is also the person who came up with the idea of “the average man.” That’s a useful concept, but if you try to apply it to any one person, you come up with the absurdity of a person with 2.4 children. Averages measure entire populations and often don’t apply to individuals.

6. It is lying by scientific authority.

Because the BMI is a single number between 1 and 100 (like a percentage) that comes from a mathematical formula, it carries an air of scientific authority. But it is mathematical snake oil.

7. It suggests there are distinct categories of underweight, ideal, overweight and obese, with sharp boundaries that hinge on a decimal place.

That’s total nonsense.

8. It makes the more cynical members of society suspect that the medical insurance industry lobbies for the continued use of the BMI to keep their profits high.

Insurance companies sometimes charge higher premiums for people with a high BMI. Among such people are all those fit individuals with good bone and muscle and little fat, who will live long, healthy lives during which they will have to pay those greater premiums.

9. Continued reliance on the BMI means doctors don’t feel the need to use one of the more scientifically sound methods that are available to measure obesity levels.

Those alternatives cost a little bit more, but they give far more reliable results.

10. It embarrasses the U.S.

It is embarrassing for one of the most scientifically, technologically and medicinally advanced nations in the world to base advice on how to prevent one of the leading causes of poor health and premature death (obesity) on a 200-year-old numerical hack developed by a mathematician who was not even an expert in what little was known about the human body back then.

Sandy asks…

How do you calculate the BMI for a cross-trainer or body-builder?

Never got an answer to this before, today it seems to be of more interest. A man with built-up muscles in his arms, shoulders, chest and legs who calculates his BMI will find that he is profoundly fat, maybe even obese. How can a cross-trainer (let alone a body-builder) make use of the BMI with his physically ambitious lifestyle taken into account? Is there a formula of some sort that gym bunnies and (whatever guys at the gym are called) can use that factors in the increased weight of muscle?

admin answers:

I don’t think the BMI would benifit someone like you. I think you just need to get your body fat percentage checked.
