Your Questions About Reading Food Labels For Healthy Eating

Donald asks…

Someone help me out of this eating disorder..? :( :( :( :( :( ?

Tonight I read an article and found these:

1. Losing a significant amount of weight
2. Continuing to diet (even when already thin)
3. Feeling fat (even after losing weight)
4. Having an abnormal fear of gaining weight
5. Losing monthly menstrual period for three or more consecutive months
6. Having a preoccupation with food and obsessively counting calories
7. Preferring to eat in isolation
8. Exercising compulsively
9. Abusing laxatives or other over-the-counter diuretics
10. Denying that you’re hungry
11. Always having an excuse as to why you’re not eating (for example, “I just ate” or “I’m feeling ill”)
12. Becoming “disgusted” with former favorite foods
13. Obsessing about food labels
14. Drastically reducing or completely eliminating fat intake
15. Not believing others when they tell you you’re thin
16. Detesting all or specific parts of your body
17. Denying that a problem exists

I have Symptoms No 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16 and 17.

I don’t want to count calories anymore. I don’t want to have to do exercise every day. I just want to be healthy but I don’t know how.. how can I eat healthy when I’m so, so terrified of gaining weight?

I hope there’s a website online that has threads for conversations for people who have eating disorders like myself.

No harsh answers, thank you.

James asks…

Food suggestions for dieting?

Look, I am skinny, but I still want to eat the right foods because I am trying to gain abs. However, I have no clue what to read. So many foods are labeled unhealthy, so I’m afraid I will eat foods that I consider healthy, when they really aren’t. So I was wondering if anyone had a good suggestions for foods to eat for Breakfest, Lunch, and dinner. I am in decent shape, but want to be in excellent shape through cardio, and various workouts, so the gym part is covered, but I have no clue what to eat. Thanks.

admin answers:

Hi-

Breakfast: avoid sugar-loaded cereal, do you like oatmeal?
It is very filling and tasty esp. With strawberry, milk and sugar.

If you don’t like that you could go for 2 toasts (whole grain) with cheese (not american cheese, edam is better and much tastier or low-fat cream cheese) with OJ or AJ or 2% milk.

Perhaps 2 egg omlette with cheese and bacon with 1 slice of toast+cup of milk

I ate this and was very healthy for long (was anyway) and it is also very healthy if you cook the eggs with EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) instead of butter.

Lunch: I don’t know if you like that or not but I usually had a bagel (whole grain) with low fat cream cheese (so yummy) or a salad (low fat dressing) or pasta salad or baked potato (very easy and quick and healthy, i’ll post it down)

Dinner: you know deep fried food is very unhealthy but if you like the taste of french fries and fried chicken,… Bake them in the oven instead while coating the pan with EVOO. It is much healthier and you get used to it. Add sides such as pasta (whole grain) and use EVOO instead of any other fat. It is okay to eat white pasta but in moderation along with pizza. Processed meat (burgers, sausages,..) are very unhealthy so go for baked chicken, grilled steak, tuna… But it is okay to indulge with mcdonalds once in a while.

Baked potato no butter recipe:

Wash potato and poke some holes in it with a thin knife. Put in a plastic bag, knot tightly leaving the bag full of air and put in microwave for 5 min. Check if the potato feels soft, if it does then talk it out, tear the bag and get the potato. Remove a bit of it from the top and put to the side.

Cover the potato with salt and pepper all around and in the put small pieces of bacon and edam cheese in the carved part. Cover the rest of the potato (the removed bit) with cheese also and bacon and microwave both in a plate for 1 min.

Hope I was helpful with this. I was very healthy with this diet and exercised regularly.

Laura asks…

How do you convert kcal to calories for cat food? How to determine an average feeding amount?

I have a cat that is massively underweight and has kidney cancer, so the more high calorie food he eats the better. I know others have the opposite problem: a healthy cat that needs a diet. I read that the average for a cat is 15-30 cal per pound of body weight, but the cans, dry food, and treats all measure in kcals. I vaguely remember from food chemisty class that 1 kcal of energy = .001 cals, but I read that it’s the opposite (1 kcal = 1,000 “label” nutritional calories) and that kcals and calories are the same/interchangeable when it comes to pet food. I am mostly interested in tracking how much my cat eats per day (more is always better for him), but I know the real conversion would help a lot of other people with overweight cats too. Does anyone know the real conversion? Does it vary between brands of food? Does the conversion factor in how much just passes through his system undigested (there are 2 measurements on each can of food)? I will ask my vet to explain the confusing label when they open on Monday, but I think a basic calorie conversion for cat food labels will help everyone, Anyone who can explain the two conflicting kcal counts on the medical k/d food I have in the mean time would be greatly appreciated (his vet seems to dumb things down for me for no reason, but otherwise has taken great care of all of my animals), but really I mainly need the conversion so I can determine how many kcals are in a pet food nutritional label calorie and determine how much my cat is eating (enough to gain weight back, enough to maintain weight, etc.)

admin answers:

1 kcal= 1 calorie

“The energy requirement for adult cats range from 60-70 kcal metabolizable energy/kg body weight per day for inactive cats to 80-90 kcal/kg BW for active cats. Kittens at five weeks of age require 250 kcal/kg BW. The requirement drops with age, to 100 kcal/kg BW at 30 weeks and to the adult requirement at about 50 weeks. Gestating cats require about 90-100 kcal/kg BW and lactating cats 90-270 kcal/kg BW depending on litter size”- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_food#Energy_requirement

“Since most people free-feed dry food, the amount of calories consumed in a day is not known. In this case, figure out what you think your cat *should* weigh and plug that number into this formula:

Required calories per day = [13.6 X optimal lean body weight in pounds] + 70

Most female cats should weigh a nice, lean 10 -11 pounds. Most male cats should fall into the 11 -13 pound range.”- http://www.catinfo.org/?link=felineobesity#Safe_Rate_of_Weight_Loss

Hills k/d® Feline “Canned 1279kcal/kg (200 kcal/ 156 g can )”

- “1279kcal/kg” means if your cat ate 1 kilogram of this food , your cat would have consumed 1279kcal
-”(200 kcal/ 156 g can)” 1 156g/5.5oz can of cat food contains 200 kcals

John asks…

do I have an eating disorder? Please read this and help me?

I’m 13 years old (almost 14) , 5’3/5’4 and i weigh around 120 pounds (might be a bit less)

I know i’m not fat but i’m very self conscious of my body. For the past couple months i’ve been exercising every day. Most days I run 2 mile runs and sometimes walk 1 mile in addition, on other days i do a workout dance class for an hour. If I skip a day of exercise I feel very guilty. I constantly worry and think about my body, and when I eat food I read all the labels. I’m not starving myself, and I don’t make myself throw up or anything like that, I don’t binge, but I’m always obsessing over everything I eat. I make sure everything I eat is very healthy, and I seriously never eat any junk food or sweets. Last night I was at my grandparents for dinner and they served a small slice of pie for everybody, but I just COULDN’T eat a bite, I never am able to eat sweet things like ice cream or anything. My mom says that I should be able to enjoy sweets occasionally and that I need to stop worrying since i’m exercising regularly. That makes sense, I know, but I can’t bring myself to eat anything sugary like that. I don’t love my body and so if I ever slip up eating something that isn’t 100% good for me, i’ll feel VERY guilty. Today at lunch I had a lot of granola which was full of sugar and nuts and I felt very guilty, even though it was organic and it was light brown sugar, it was just extra calories. I know i’m not anorexic or anything, and I’m not underweight I know.. I’m just really trying to lose a little weight and tone up. Sometimes I find myself chewing food and spitting some out instead of swallowing it all. Not all the time, but sometimes. I’m always jealous of other peoples bodies and I just wish I could have a beautiful body. I always think that i’m not happy with my body and I eat unhealthy, it’s my fault that my body isn’t the way I want it to be. I can’t go a day without worrying about my body and the food I put in it.

Do you think i have an eating disorder? if so what would it be? I don’t feel comfortable talking to anybody I know about this because it’s really embarrassing. I don’t know what to do
edit: I always think that IF i’m not happy with my body and I eat unhealthy, it’s my fault that my body isn’t the way I want it to be. I can’t go a day without worrying about my body and the food I put in it.

IF, i do eat healthy.

admin answers:

Sounds like EDNOS (eating disorder not otherwise specified)
However, if you keep with this path you may find yourself underweight and a classified anorexic

Richard asks…

Do I sound anorexic to you?

My parents think I’m anorexic because I’m on a restricted diet. I limit myself from eating greasy, sugary, fatty food. I try to eat as healthy as possible. I count calories, never allowing myself to go over 1800 a day. I read all food labels before eating. Every once in a while however, I will allow myself to have whatever I want in moderation. I try to exercise at least everyday for about 30-60 min. I’m very afraid of gaining weight, it’s one of my worst fears. I’m 19, 5’3, 100 lbs.

Do I sound anorexic?
Also, I want to lose a little bit of weight. Not too much. Just like a few pounds.

admin answers:

I am the same way, but i am not as skinny as you. Your are NOT anorexic, you are just very cautious of what goes in your body which is GOOD. You dont want crappy foods in your body. You should not lose weight though, try eating more protein and lifting weights so your gaining muscle and you look skinnier with muscle on, just please do not get scared when you see the scale going up but your still fitting into your skinny jeans. Muscle weighs more than fat, but it takes up less room in your body so you look thinner.
Look at victorias secret models for a healthy toned beautiful body.Theyre also great role models because they actually eat very healthy and exercise lots to maintain their strong bodies.

Do not get too obsessed counting calories though, just eat when your hungry and stop when your satisfied.

But its better than Explorer!

Linda asks…

FireFoX????????

I always hear that Fire fox is better than Internet Explorer and its faster safer ect….But what are the bad things about firefox?

admin answers:

I really don’t know of any bad things, since it’s open source. The only complaints I have are that cut and paste could be done a little better; and it should allow shortcuts like Internet Explorer. I really don’t like bookmarks.

On the plus side of things, it allows Java and Javascript.

Microsoft tried to set the standard for both programming languages, but Sun Microsystems wouldn’t put up with any of that, so Microsoft purposely crippled all future versions of it’s browser – and as a result – Internet Explorer will no longer enable Java or JavaScript. Also, Dynamic HTML is disabled. That was supposed to be one of the next steps, in the evolution of the internet.

Microsoft and it’s monoploy have done more to cripple the internet, than all of the spammers, virus writers, adware / malware writers, software pirates, and hackers combined.

Donna asks…

FIREFOX…?

I have asked several questions, and many of the replies suggest that I consider FIREFOX. I’m not sure what it is – probably a browser. Is it similar to Netscape and Internet Explorer? What are its good features and its bad features?

admin answers:

Firefox IS a browser, published by Mozilla, that has been competing with Internet Explorer for the past couple years. It’s actually a pretty cool browser that has turned out to nab more of the market than I think most people anticipated.

Good features:
Great pop-up and spyware protection. This is also partly due to the fact that the vast majority of viruses and spyware are written FOR Explorer, which most people are running.
Probably the best feature of Firefox is tabbed browsing, which opens up multiple windows within a single window so that your taskbar doesn’t get crowded with all of the webpages you’re navigating between.
Also, from their website…I think this is pretty cool: “Firefox 1.5 delivers easier navigation for everyone, including those who are visually or motor-impaired. Firefox is the first browser to support DHTML accessibility, which, when enabled by Web authors, allows rich Web applications to be read aloud.”

Bad features:
The only one so far is that since most webpages are meant to be viewed with Explorer, I had limited accessibility to some web applications. For example, when Yahoo! Introduced PhotoMail, I wasn’t able to download the upgraded e-mail application because the service was built for certain versions of Explorer only. But as Firefox gets more popular (they just released an upgrade) I expect this to happen less.

So the people recommending this browser were absolutely correct! I have used it for almost a year now and love it.

Your Questions About Bmi Calculator Children

George asks…

BMI calculator can be used from what age of people? can 16 years old use it?

I heard BMI is only for adults. but i’m already 16. so can i use BMI calculator to know whether i’m normal, under or over? and from what range of age people can use BMI? i know children can’t use .. but from what age can we use BMI

admin answers:

This one is for children and teens. The other ones are for adults. But note, some can lie. Some give a totally different response than another. Only your doctor can tell the truth.

Joseph asks…

bmi concerning things?

so i measured my daughter bmi on a NORMAL bmi calculator. it said she was underweight.
then there was this ‘child bmi calculator‘ and it said she was a healthy weight. i thought is didnt matter whether you were a child or not. just depending on your height and weight.
confusing but what im asking is which calculator should i listen too!

admin answers:

If your daughter is in her teens or younger, the regular BMI doesn’t apply. Many healthy children are “underweight” according to the adult BMI tables because they’ve had a growth spurt up but their body hasn’t yet filled out. This phase of being “underweight” doesn’t come with the same health risks as an adult with the same BMI though they are not considered underweight.

Talk to your doctor if you have any concerns, and remember the BMI formula is not a hard-fast rule but is just one tool which may help assess if someone’s a healthy weight. It tends to fall apart if you try to apply it to teens, children, or those who have a good deal of muscle (Tom Cruise would be considered “obese” if you just calculated his BMI, but obviously that’s not true – he’s very fit)

Linda asks…

bmi calculator says i’m obese, have been trying to lose weight very long, but nothing works?

okay, so i knew i was overweight, after having had 4 children in 7 years, i have put on alot of weight, i went from 67 kilo’s to 95 after having had my 4th child 5 months ago. i am excercising, on diets, no sugar, etc, but nothing helps. what should i do? i am afraid that if i go to my doc, he’ll dismiss me because i had a baby 5 months ago, but after i had him, i only lost 5 kilo’s, and nothing after that. could there be something underlying under this? please help me, because it annoyes me, and even my husband tells me to lose weight, but nothing works. thank you for any response.

admin answers:

BMI calculators are incorrect and need to chucked out with the stone age. These days they have proven that certain ethnic races have different make ups, so there fore effects the BMI rating, it also doesn’t take into consideration the Muscle Mass someone has nor bone density etc. The best way to look at your weight and see if your over is jump in front of the mirror and if anything carry s on jiggling after you stopped means your over weight.

Remember that your body is still coming back to normal after having a baby and I reckon a good year before it has completely returned to normal but inside and out! So dont be too hard on yourself. My advice is to do as Kylee has stated before, less in more out ( and that means in a healthy way) and if you are breastfeeding you are going to need a bit more calories in your diet to contend with the extra need on the body.

Good luck :)

Charles asks…

BMI Calculator? Should I be concerned?

I went online and calculated my daughter’s BMI, and I’m concerned that since she’s no where near reaching puberty this could become a problem..what is your opinion? I mean, she’s eated the following today:

a fourth of a fruit pastry (25%)
a bag of baked lays cheese and sour cream chips
90% serving of honey nut cheerios
1 serving of apples and cinnamon instant oatmeal
half an apple
a 4 in. quesadillah just cheese and beans
small amount of salad

and I think that’s it, I’ve just payed attention today, I’m not crazy, I just want to make sure. But it seems as though she has a healthy appetite, but she is pretty cautious about sweets, just because they’re unhealthy

A 12 year and 8 months old (female) child
who is 76 pounds
and is 4 feet and 11 inches tall has
a body mass index of 15.4,
which is at the 6th percentile,

and would indicate that your child is at a healthy weight. Keep in mind that it is still possible for a child to have an eating disorder even if they are at a healthy weight though.

admin answers:

So far, her BMI is fine—but her calorie content is far too low and her carb content far too high for a healthy diet. She is eating about 1100 calories. This is an estimate because I did not include the milk for the cereal or know just what you consider a “small amount” of salad and which dressing was on it, or what it consisted of. Not only that, but you say she only ate “90%” of a serving of honey nut cheerios–but what is a serving? On the box, it is a half-cup of cereal. Most people eat a BOWLFUL–which is about 4-5 times that much! 90% of a bowl full of cereal would be about 3 or 4 actual SERVINGS.

So her calorie content could be much higher.

BUT–I would be more concerned that her diet is almost exclusively carbohydrates. These are burned off quickly in a very active person—like a child–but a diet high in carbs can lead quickly to Type II diabetes and high cholesterol even in an active person! That’s far more important. There is not enough protein, not NEARLY enough vegetables. A fruit is not considered a vegetable serving–it’s mostly sugar and carbs. A small apple contains about 55 calories, but about 15 of those calories are carbohydrates.

She may not be overweight now, and her BMI may be all right, but she won’t STAY that way if she continues to eat like this. Fruit pastries, potato chips, sweetened cereals–even oatmeal–and the beans and the tortilla in the quesadilla are all serious offenders for carbohydrates. Out of the 1000 calories I was able to count up by the list you gave, she ate over 125 grams of carbohydrates and only a small amount of whole-grains (oatmeal, cheerios–minimal!) . Was this one meal? Two meals? All day? Because if it was all day, then this is not enough protein, not enough servings of vegetables, and not enough whole grains–too many white-flour, sugary processed foods, and VERY unbalanced–and it will–WILL–lead to trouble down the road, don’t kid yourself.

Yes, you need to be concerned.

Paul asks…

What diet should I put my 12 year old daughter on?

I went on to a BMI calculator website designed for children , and it said she was overweight.
She is 12 yrs, 73 lbs and 4″11 tall.
thanks for your help. :)

admin answers:

You don’t put her on a diet. You eat healthy food as a family and engage in exercise as a family.

Your Questions About Nutritional Guidelines

Carol asks…

Is it fair to say that corporate giant McDonalds is smarter than the liberal city council of San Francisco?

McDonald’s restaurants in San Francisco have found a way to comply with a city law that bans free toy giveaways with Happy Meals: charge 10 cents for the toys.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that franchises in the city will begin charging the dime to customers who request that the toys be added to their Happy Meals.

San Francisco last year became the first major U.S. city to prohibit fast-food restaurants from including toys with children’s meals that don’t meet certain nutritional guidelines. The law takes effect Thursday.

Scott Rodrick owns 10 of the 19 McDonald’s franchises in the city and says the 10-cent charge complies with the “letter of the law.” The money from the toy sales will help build a new Ronald McDonald House. He has no intention of dropping the price of a Happy Meal.

According to McDonald’s USA Director of Media Relations, the 10-cent price was determined from surveying customers. “They told us 10 cents is fair and reasonable,” especially after being told the money would go to a charity, she said.

admin answers:

Just go to http://www.sparkpeople.com to find out this information. It uses your current weight and what weight you want to achieve to figure out (in grams for most items) how much you should be taking in. For me im supposed to eat 60 grams of protein a day, 213 carbs, and 42 grams fat. It also tells me what my calcium (100 grams) and fiber should be (23)

Hope that helps, its honestly the easiest way to find out!

George asks…

Nutritional value of cereal?

My pediatrician has given me a feeding chart that gives me guidelines on how much milk/solids my daughter should be eating at what stages. It breaks it down by food groups, ect. Anyway, at 8 months of age, it DOES recommend two servings of cereal each day (2-4 tablespoons with each serving). I’ve heard from several people on here though that cereal is junk. So, if you think that, why? I have never heard the counterargument of why cereal is bad, so I’m interested to know what you think. I’m particularly interested in this topic right now because I just started reading labels on baby food jars. I make my own baby food, but my daughter just started a daycare where they do not allow homemade baby food. In fact, the even provide her jar food. I was shocked when I looked at the jar and saw how much sugar was in that stuff!!!
They feed her Gerber. Of course the fruits and veggie sugars could be the natural sugars, but I’m weary after looking at the JARRED cereal. Out of curiosity, I picked one of those jars up (which they do not feed my daughter at the daycare), and it had like 14g of sugar in it. But, the dry cereal equivalent had 1g of sugar. Yuck!! Like you guys, I don’t get baby desserts. Why would anyone buy those?

Right now we are feeding our little girl HappyBellies organic oatmeal. When she was on rice cereal, I insisted on buying her brown rice just to up the nutritional value.

It makes me shiver that I don’t have more control over the food my daughter gets at daycare, but my husband and I don’t have much of a choice. He is active duty Air Force and she has a slot at the base CDC (which is nationally accredited and very, very good). The base charges us $139/week in the Boston area. If we went off base (say, to a place where I could provide homemade), it would be over $300/week near us

admin answers:

Cereal had ‘added iron’ ‘fake’ iron that isnt nortmally found in the food. Instead you could be giving her pureed meats with veg that has natural normal iron in them not fake stuff. Plus it isnt half as nutritional as formula/breastmilk or fruit/veg pureed…formula/breastmilk per ounce has waaay more calories than cereal. I completely skipped cereal and went onto pureed meat/veg. Cereals a filler food, it fills them up with not much nutritionally value comapred to other foods x

admin answers:

Too many big questions at a time but
2. No. Sweating’s purpose is to regulate body temperature and dispose of bodily poisons. If anything you would gain even more vitamins and minerals because your body will use vitamins and minerals more efficiently with less poisons in your body that sweating can help get rid of.

6. Vitamins are a vast category of nutrients. In the physical world vitamins don’t actually exist. The term vitamin is only a way to categorize nutrients. Nutrients (which includes minerals) nourish life allowing cells to replicate and perform their roles.

8. If I had to mention a single food bananas would be known for having miracle fibers. The entire banana (the husk too) has great fiber. Green bananas are known for having unique fats and fibers the body craves. Fiber’s role isn’t actually as great and important as some make it to be. It isn’t a vital requirement but it sure can boost health by keeping digestive tract clean, digestive muscles strong and can help get nutrients to the lower parts of the digestive system that sometimes doesn’t happen.

David asks…

DO you understand the CODEX ALIMENTARIOUS?

Codex Alimentarius (the international food standard organization) and multinational corporation collusion together impair and gravely threaten world health. If Codex has its way, its deadly standards and guidelines will be implemented in the United States by 2010 significantly impairing the health and health prospects of all Americans, killing those with chronic illnesses who depend on therapeutic dose nutritional supplements for survival.
you can research it here. http://www.healthfreedomusa.org

There seems to be quite a few misinformed people out here. Its more than just regulation of vitamins and other suppliments. If you read the entire codex document you will find it confusing and hard to follow. Exactly they way they wrote it so its hard to understand. Understand this. They are taking your rights to choose what kind of health care you want.

Even with reading and thinking the wording is so twisted.

I do not do doctors. I was in the Army. I served in Bosnia as a medic. I have not been to a doctor since I parted with the army in 1988. I left on good terms and have VA benefits. But our medicine is stupid medicine.

I have had medical problems and I go to Golden Temple. GT is a local health food store with a holistic medicine practitioner that is happy to address any questions. Most at no charge and will suggest herbal remedies.

What would I do without this? I do not know. I have been using that for all of my nutritional, emotional, physical, and psychological needs for almost 20 years.

Your Questions About Physical Fitness

Mandy asks…

What to do the night before a physical fitness test the next morning?

I have a PT Physical Fitness test tomorrow morning for a job, it includes the following: 1.5 Mile run, Maximum Push-ups, Timed 1-minute situps, the sit and reach, the vertical jump. Does anyone have any advice for what to do the night before? Please advise.

admin answers:

Just relax. Eat a good healthy meal. Get at least 8 hours of rest. In the morning eat some oatmeal, plain, that way you can get some carbs into your body. Don’t drink milk otherwise it can curdle and you will get sick.

Lisa asks…

Are there any jobs in the Military without a physical fitness test or a way to bypass it?

Is there any way to get around the physical fitness tests?
Ive seen some guys that i cant believe passed the tests. Do officers still have to take the PT tests? Or a certain job where they dont care? Like a doctor or something?

admin answers:

Nothing you can do to avoid the physical activity of the military. It is their job to be in shape. Would you want a man that can’t run without being winded to defend this country?? No getting around it either. Suck it up, and look into the benefits you’ll have from it.

What types of physical fitness programs are there for police officers?
and what do they involve?

admin answers:

Once you are hired, most departments have no formal programs.

Some have thier own gyms, and some provide discounted memberships, but it is up to you to find the time to go.

There are a few departments that have annual physical fitness tests, if you pass you get a bonus. However, participation is voluntary.

Your Questions About Obesity Epidemic

Robert asks…

What are some creative ways to fight the obesity epidemic?

Why do some people think that it’s not their fault.
I’m overweight about 15 pounds but I remember all
the bad food I ate to create it. Yes some people
are more susceptible to weight gain than others but
no one has special genetics or a thyroid problem that
prevents them from losing weight.

admin answers:

It is more mental than physical, in my OWN personal opinion. Which makes it more difficult to deal with and treat. Mental health (health care) is so expensive. It’s very similar to being a drug addict or being addicted to achohol. It can be overcome however you have to do it yourself and if you can afford it using therapy! It’s almost impossible, but it is possible. It is all about being ready, recognizing the fact that it’s not impossible and then taking the first step with “I can” in mind.

Maria asks…

What are your thoughts on the obesity epidemic?

I personally feel that it’s a bunch of bull crap. What do you think on this issue?

admin answers:

I’ve lost weight by exercising every day, so the obesity epidemic is overblown to a big extent if you only focus on food.

Nancy asks…

What aspects of the American lifestyle contribute to the obesity epidemic?

Just to clarify, I am not tryint to single out people in the United States. My assignment is based on the Unitied States only for a paper, and I wanted everyone’s opinion.

admin answers:

1) More and more, we sit on our gazunkases while doing our “work.” Our anscestors used to actually WORK for their living!

2) We rush everywhere and seldom have time for a leisurely meal, thus grabbing a quick bite at the fast food joint instead.

3) Who has time (or even knows how, for that matter) to cook for themselves anymore?

4) Crazy scheduling and/or broken families. The faimly sit-down dinner is fast becoming a thing of the past.

5) Self-indulgence and instant gratification. People would often rather eat what tastes good than what is good for them.

Richard asks…

Who is to blame for the obesity epidemic in the United States?

Please explain your opinion. Also, could you list at least 5 pieces of evidence that supports your opinion?

For example, it could be the consumers fault. Maybe even the parent’s fault. Or the fast food companies fault?

I wanna know your opinion. Thanks!

admin answers:

Everyone who’s obese. Everyone’s in charge of what they put in their own mouth, and everyone knows if they eat junk with a bad metabolism they risk gaining weight. That’s why I gave up junk food. Didn’t lose much weight though, still a little chubby :(

Donald asks…

who is to blame for the obesity epidemic in america? schools? the government? the fast food industry? individu?

who is to blame for the obesity epidemic in america? schools? the government? the fast food industry? individuals ?

admin answers:

I’m inclined to blame the individual. The government, the schools, the fast food industry, the persons parents, may all be factors but in the end the individual has the choice to step away from the fattening food, and/or to exercise more often.

Steven asks…

What foods r healthy to eat if u want to lose wight?

im having a hard time finding healthy foods to eat that will help me lose wight. so if u know any good recipes tell me!

admin answers:

You need to eat lean meats (chicken, fish, turkey, lean beef) , low gi fruits (apples, bananas, pineapple, oranges), green veggies (broccoli, celery, green lettuce, spinach), only whole wheat breads (look on the package and see if the first ingredient is whole wheat flour, if it is it should be good unless it has high fructose corn syrup like Mrs Bairds does). Jillian Michaels from biggest loser has a great quote, “before you eat your food ask yourself, does it have a momma or did it come from the ground? If not don’t eat it.” Eat 5 – 6 small meals a day, this will increase your metabolism and help you to not feel so hungry in between meals. It’s all about portion and calorie control regardless of what food you are eating, but remember cleaning up your diet and eating X amount of calories of lean good healthy foods instead of X amount of calories of candy bars (I know you are probably not eating 4 candy bars a day but its just an example) will help you lose it faster. The leaner you are eating the faster you will lose it, and you will get a toned healthy look instead of a skinny jiggly look. You also need to drink at least 8 glasses (8oz) of water a day. Sometimes hunger is mistaken for thirst so if you are hungry drink 8 oz of water and wait 30 minutes, if you are still hungry then eat a light healthy snack. Water also helps you feel fuller longer and helps flush out toxins that may prevent fat loss. Also allow your self a cheat day (but don’t go over board and eat everything in sight or like 5 cakes in that day). Allowing yourself a cheat day once a week will help cut out cravings… Think of it like a reward if you did well with your diet and exercise that week have a piece of pie… If not just stick with you healthy food. You can find recipes for decent tasting healthy foods on sights like bodyforlife.com and bodybuilding.com and also on recipe sights like allrecipes.com, foodfit.com, cookinglight.com and foodnetwork.com

Lizzie asks…

What are some healthy foods to eat for a teenage girl?

I have my routine planned out but now I need to know what to eat. At school I’ve only been eating salads. I usually don’t have time for breakfast and I after school when I get home I usually eat a salad.
Could you tell me what’s healthy to eat for breakfast, lunch, and snacks?

admin answers:

Bleck. With you on the school thing, my school pretty much only offers cheesy pizzas, burgers, pasta bowls and other fatty foods.

BREAKFAST
1 piece fruit and 1/2 cup cereal
1/2 cup oatmeal and yogurt
1 piece fruit and 1 piece toast w/peanutbutter
1 egg (cooked w/out oils or cheese) and 1 cup milk

LUNCH
1 light sandwich (such as sliced turkey and lettuce on whole grain bread) and 1 piece fruit
1 medium salad (grilled chicken with lettuce), vinegar-based dressing
1 serving meat (such as grilled chicken) and 1/2 cup veggies
1 piece fruit, 2 pieces toast w/peanut butter, 1 cup milk

DINNER
1 serving grain (pasta/rice, whole grain) and veggies
1 serving meat, 1 small serving cheese, veggies
Fruit medley (sliced apples, grapes, pears, bananas, orange) and cubed cooked chicken (I love this meal!)
1 medium sandwich (such as lean meat burger or grilled chicken with veggies on top, whole grain bun/bread) and 1 piece fruit

Daniel asks…

What are good healthy foods to eat?

i don’t want to try a fad diet, nor do i need to loose weight.
i just want to eat healthy but have no iidea what kind of things to make here at home..

i don’t like sea food, so eating tuna and such is out of the question..

what do you like cooking thats healthy? where can i get ideas?

admin answers:

Any vegetable or fruit is healthy, in fact, you should eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day! For grains, you should always try to eat whole grains… Replace that white rice with brown rice, white bread with wheat or grain bread, etc. Also make sure you eat enough protein! The healthiest meats are chicken and turkey, but as long as you keep your portions in size (about the size of a deck of cards for one serving of meat) you can really eat whatever meat you want, just avoid skin/fat. Also, if you like stuff without butter, skip the butter, you could always make healthy sauces or something to replace the butter.

Your Questions About Healthy Lifestyles Scholarship

George asks…

I need fed-back on my scholarship essay. Im not quite done yet. Im I on the right track?

Im applying for a scholarship, and I need fed-back. Im not done writing my essay, but am I on the right track?
The topic is Health And Fitness.

Seventeen Magazine, the most influential magazine for American teenage girls, inspired me to adapt to a healthy lifestyle. Each subscription includes teenage girls giving a visual description on how to do exercises such as lunges, squats, and push-ups. Seventeen Magazine, also, teaches young girls how to make healthy foods. In fact, the 2009 November issue explains how sugar can cause mental and emotional problems. The magazine, also, explains the danger of drinking alcohol, “It is a depressant that stays in your body and for days” implied Jill P. Weber, the fitness and health editor for Seventeen Magazine, “ a couple of drinks can make you overly emotional and then depressed the day after.” However, teens like Char, Christine, and Ashley had to learn the hard way of an unhealthy lifestyle when they discovered they were diagnosed with clinical depression. After hearing their intriguing stories, I knew I had to alter my unhealthy lifestyle.

I think if this is a scholarship essay you should make it more in depth and professional since this is a competition against many other people that really want the price

i know there are some good ppl out there that are good with there lives and are happy.

thank you so much i will e-mail you if i use any info thanks again and have fun all is opinion =)

admin answers:

A healthy lifestyle has to do with making healthier choices in life. All these advertisements for fast food you just have to look past. Also being active is key, humans like all animals are meant to move.

I wake up, brush teeth and cook some breakfast like eggs and toast with fruit.

I go workout early in the morning since my body is still fresh. Then after that, I have my lunch usually a wheat sandwich and some juice. I do some schoolwork and finally I finish up my day with dinner, watching some tv and taking a shower, then going to sleep.

John asks…

I think i am a bad writer can anyone give me their opinion?

I just graduated high school and have been writing many scholarship essays but i do not seem to win. I am about to start college and i am scared that i might not be ready any advice? The following is a sample on a scholarsip about “why it is important to practice healthy lifestyles in school”?

Unfortunately, many students have the habit of either skipping breakfast before going to school or not getting enough sleep. What they do not realize is that aside from affecting their health, skipping breakfast and not getting enough sleep also affects them in school. It is important for students to practice healthy lifestyles in and out of school because it will help them be healthy so they can have good attendance, be energized and focused throughout the school day, and ultimately do well academically.
Doing well in school can be challenging for students if they have poor attendance. Everyone knows that the first step in earning good grades is to be in class everyday. Which is why it is important for students to maintain healthy lifestyles so they can be healthy to attend school everyday. A big part of having a healthy lifestyle is practicing good hygiene. But being healthy can seem difficult especially since everyone is surrounded by germs especially students in school. They are virtually everywhere, doorknobs, toilets, windows, desks the list is endless. Unfortunately germs make people sick and can even send them to the hospital. The good news is that germs and the illnesses they can cause are preventable. Practicing good hygiene is the key to avoiding them. Of course we can’t get rid of all germs but with good hygiene students have less of a chance of becoming ill. Good hygiene can go a long away. If students practice good hygiene they can avoid getting sick and prevent unnecessary absences from school. If students practice good hygiene when they are young it will make it easier for them to practice it in the future because they are so used to it that it will be like second nature to them.
Students who do not practice healthy lifestyles usually have a lack of energy or have trouble concentrating in class. That lack of energy and minimum concentration ability often prevents students from learning. A serious problem that lack of energy leads to among students is the consumption of energy drinks, coffee, and other energy related products. A large amount of students who consume energy drinks or energy products often abuse them in hopes of increasing energy and being more alert. They are using energy products to make up for their lack of sleep or fatigue resulting from not practicing a healthy lifestyle. Because of the high levels of sugar and caffeine in energy products students can become addicted to them which can cause serious health problems. In order to avoid the dangers of energy drinks and other energy products, students should practice healthy lifestyles so that they are always well rested and energized. If students practice a healthy lifestyle they will have no need to turn to artificial energy which can affect their health. A few important actions that students should include in their lifestyle are to getting enough sleep, eating nutritious foods, and exercising regularly. Being well rested and eating breakfast is especially important for students because it gives them the energy they need for the school day. From Personal experience I can say that being well rested and eating breakfast definitely has a positive impact on school performance. It allows you to think clearer and be more attentive in the classroom. Unfortunately not many students realize how important a healthy lifestyle is in school. But schools should work on influencing the benefits of a healthy lifestyle especially for young students because they are developing and their bodies need to be healthy so they can grow.
It is important for all students to lead a healthy lifestyle because it has a tremendous impact on their academic performance. Students who practice a healthy lifestyle are more likely to do better than those who do not. The reason being that a healthy lifestyle increases a students ability to learn. Students who do not lead healthy lifestyles usually have trouble concentrating in class and their poor concentration ability will prevent them from learning, therefore resulting in bad grades. Any unhealthy lifestyle such as lack of sleep and poor nutrition can make students irritable and reduce their effort in the classroom. It will also prevent them from thinking clearly. On the other hand students who practice healthy lifestyles will feel ready to learn and will be able to concentrate on their work. A healthy lifestyle can even help students raise their test scores. Doctors have even said that eating breakfast and getting a good night sleep will increase a students test scores. A healthy lifestyle is beneficial for all students to practice.
If students want to do well in school they need to make sure they

admin answers:

4 long paragraphs on the importance of breakfast and a good nights’ sleep? That’s one paragraph at most. Expand on your topic to include other things that might compromise a students’ ability to learn, especially in college. How about drinking, sexual promiscuity, too many extracurricular activities such as clubs, parties, games, etc. Mention the importance of study habits, and how a person can sometimes even find a class on developing good habits. Talk about how a student should engage with his or her professors in order to develop a passion for what is being learned. Good nutrition in general is a problem for college students, who tend to live on ramen noodles and hot pockets.

Maria asks…

can you use “I” in an essay?

i’m writing an essay on why a healthy lifestyle is important in school. It’s a scholarship contest. Should i not refer to myself in this essay. Do i not use “I”, can i use “you”. for example “i found this quote similar to myself..”

thanks!

admin answers:

Normally one would refrain from using first person pronouns. What type of essay is this?
Maybe you could try saying “The following/previous quote can be easily applicable to many (people) because blah blah blah”, in which you are secretly saying that the quote applies to your life, without the use of the words I/my/we/you, etc.

I would suggest not using “I” and “you” in your paper.

Your Questions About Nutritional Guidelines

Laura asks…

How screwed up is California that they’re taking away Kids Happy Meals?

Not only did San Fransisco play an important role getting loser Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown elected again, but they are screwing with the kid’s lunch’s now..

“The supes today passed an ordinance that will require meals to meet nutritional guidelines if restaurants wish to include a toy with the food purchase. More importantly, the supes passed the so-called “Happy Meal Ban” by an 8-3 vote ? meaning it can survive a promised veto from Mayor Gavin Newsom. That’s right: San Francisco done banned the Happy Meal. Robble robble.”

http://blogs.sfweekly.com/foodie/2010/11/sf_supes_pass_happy_meal_ban_w.php

How is this legal to ban food?

This isn’t heroin or Meth people, it’s fries and and hamburger and a freaking toy..

admin answers:

The state is mentally bankrupt.

Betty asks…

What do you guys think? Bake sale ban?

Recently, Chancellor Joel Klein passed a regulation basically banning bake sales in public schools (in NYC) because he believes that they have played a role in childhood obesity.
Like everything, this new regulation is going to have consequences. One of the biggest things that has happened as a result of this (at my school at least) is that our clubs, that rely almost exclusively on bake sales for funding, are not able to make money.
In my opinion, the regulation is a pathetic attempt at conquering the issue of childhood obesity and I was wondering what you guys thought about it.

If you want more information here’s the links to the official regulation and the nutritional guidelines:

http://docs.nycenet.edu/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-41/A-812.pdf

http://www.opt-osfns.org/osfns/nutrition/NutritionalGuidelines.pdf

Also, we have organized a peaceful protest on the steps of City Hall and there is (of course) a Facebook event for it:

http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/event.php?eid=157082772513

Whatever your opinion is, let me know. I would love to know what other people think!

admin answers:

It is garbage, and an over zealous knee jerk reaction on his part.
Bake sales did not create, nor magnify the obesity problem in children.
Bring back physical training, and get the junk food out of the cafeterias and vending machines, and you have started on a resolve to the problems.
Parents are the first line of defense in childhood obesity, and many of them do not seem to care.

William asks…

Does anyone have a recipe for homemade dog food (for canning)?

I have four dogs (Aussie mix, Shih Tzu, Sheltie, and Basset Hound) and I would like to make homemade dog food in my pressure canner. We raise a very large amount of broiler chickens every year and always have way too much. I can meat for ourselves, so I want to try this method for dog food. I would be willing to spend hours canning to make healthy, shelf stable foods for my dogs. Any recipes the meet neccessary nutritional guidelines would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks. :)

admin answers:

All dogs love chicken, and it’s even better if you make a healthy meal for your dogs.

I would say that you could make a chicken stock/gravy mix and make sure its pretty thick, the dogs would like it more than if it was really runny.

Then you can add vegetables. My dogs (german shep X and a lab) love peas, chopped carrots, apples and pretty much anything else you can think of.
Try and work out your dogs favourite foods and add bits of it to the food.

I love making dog food because i can go through my cupboards and fridge and anything that the dogs like will go into their food.
Rolled oats is another good thing to add to food, it will soak up some of the liquid to make it thicker and its also good for them.

Just stay away from foods like onion because they could be harmfull to your dogs.
Have Fun!!

Helen asks…

Is it fair to say that corporate giant McDonald’s is smarter than uber-liberal San Francisco?

Huckabee says Palin is wrong to attack the First Lady for encouraging healthy eating habits. What do you think?

Mike Huckabee is weighing in on the Sarah Palin v. Michelle Obama face-off when it comes to suggesting nutritional guidelines for Americans – and he’s taking the First Lady’s side.

“With all due respect to my colleague and friend Sarah Palin, I think she’s misunderstood what Michelle Obama is trying to do,” Huckabee, who has long documented his own battle with weight said Tuesday on the “Curtis Sliwa Show,” according to Politico.

Huckabee’s comments come in response to a remark from Palin on her TLC reality show Sunday during a scene in which the former Alaska governor is seen making s’mores – the not-so-healthy dessert of chocolate and marshmallows.

“[This] in honor of Michelle Obama, who said the other day we should not have dessert,” Palin quipped as she served up the tasty treat.
