Okay 3 more questions that I don’t get.
1.The equation, C6H12O6 + 6O2 ? 6CO2 + 6H2O (ATP + Heat), describes a reaction that
a. is endergonic.
b. requires energy.
c. occurs in plants only.

c. The loss in free energy that occurs as an electron moves down the transport chain.
d. The H+ electrochemical gradient across the inner mitochondria membrane.
e. The ability of oxygen to rapidly capture an electron and energize ATP synthase
D?

admin answers:

1. I think this one is B, primarily because phosphoenolpyruvate is being broken down into pyruvate. A catabolic reaction is one where you break down a molecule.

2. I agree with you on this one. Energy is released as a product, so it would be exergonic

3. I agree with you on this one, too.

4. The delta G for the reaction would be positive if you have to use up ATP for the reaction to happen. Since the question is implying that you’re using 2 ATP molecules for this, you can eliminate all the negative numbers. This leaves you +7.3 and +8. The question also says EXACTLY 2 molecules of ATP. 7.3 + 7.3= 14.6. So the answer is D

5. It’s B. The substrate won’t fit into the active site if you change the 3d structure of the enzyme. It is possible that maybe a different one would start to fit, but the main issue is that the original substrate won’t fit.

6. You’re right, the answer is D. It’s called the chemiosmotic potential, and it has to do with the proton concentration across the membrane.

Your Questions About Army Pt Test 2012

John asks…

Would i pass my army pt test?

Im 19 and in the army, I deploy on February 2012. So I have time before I leave and im using that time to workout. Me and my friend had our own little pt and I did 61 push-ups in 2 minutes, 44 sit-ups in 2 minutes and ran 2 miles in 15:13..

Is this passing or not?

admin answers:

No, it is not passing. The pt standards for someone in the 17-21 age bracket are as follows:

2 Mile Run: 15:54
2 Minute Push-Ups: 42
2 Minute Sit-Ups: 53

I’d say work on your sit ups and you should have no problem. Depending on where you deploy to, you might need to work on your run a little bit more. I know before I deployed to Afghanistan, my run was just shy of 13 minutes. Here in Afghanistan it was just shy of PASSING. The altitude really *ucks with your breathing.

Chris asks…

army reserves? what kind of document do you get when you ets? i already got a dd form 214 from active duty?

ok i etsed out of active duty army 28 sept 2010, and i signed up for the army reserves because i did this i got 15 months dropped off of my eight year obligation. I get out of the reserves Feb 2012. Do i get another DD form 214? i got one from Active Duty. I attend every drill, but they still make me do Pt test even when im about to ets in 3 months is this right?

admin answers:

You will be issued discharge orders that will end your service obligation. You only recieve a DD 214 when seperated from Active Duty, for whatever reason. The Army Reserve issues discharge orders, the NG issues NGB 22′s to thier soldiers that seperate.

Susan asks…

Flight slot in the army national guard?

Hello all, I am a senior Army ROTC cadet at a major university in the big 12. I am a SMP cadet also and have been MOS qualified. I want to stay in the national guard and fly helicopters (UH-60).

My resume looks like this: Major-Electrical Engineering GPA: 3.71 AFAST: 127 Passed flight physical already Performed at LDAC with 4/6 E’s in evaluations Score a 274 on my PT test.

In October of 2010, I had an interview with our state aviation officer and he told me he had 5 commissioned officer slots for flight school in fiscal year 2012. He told me he would be creating a OML list and if I was in the top 5 that I would be sent. In addition, I was told I had a better than a 50/50 chance of being chosen based off the interview.

What my question is, in the National Guard, is it more about who you know, and less about how qualified you are? For example, I accessed in the top 10 percent of ROTC cadets and could have gone active aviation if I wanted to, but I wanted to stay guard (more money in the civilian sector). I just have this feeling that I shouldnt consider myself a shoe in for an aviation spot in the national guard just because of my qualifications. Do you guys think that a letter of recommendation from a National Guard officer would have a way larger impact than how I did in school/rotc? I just have this weird feeling that I will not get this aviation spot because these national guard officers in Aviation dont know me at all. Any hints or suggestions on this dynamic process would be awesome!!!!! Thanks all!

admin answers:

I am sure you will get one of the slots. I will tell you that it is whom you know throughout the Military not just the NG. I have 21yrs of experience to tell you it is good to communicate and attend every social event. Once your Seniors know who you are, it makes it easier for you to get things. That being said, you have a good resume and it should land you a slot. Lastly you probably already know that you are promoted by Congress, so again i say word of mouth goes far. I served with one West Point Grade that made LTC in 14yrs. He definitely was fast tracking. Good luck and welcome to the Military Life.

Could I be chaptered out of the Army, while on a P2 Profile?

I am barred and If i do not take a PT test by May, the commander says he will have to issue the chapter work to put me out. My profile I have expires in June.Since I am on profile and can not take the test by May, is he able to still issue the chapter to get me out. I have 5 and 1/2 years and ETS Dec 1 2012. I have enough leave dates to leave in mid Sep. I also have some upcoming appts and determining what the y find DR says he might issue a MED Board….

admin answers:

Well, you best get those appointments moved up to next week…
And the MEB started long before May…

Don’t know what a P2 Profile consists of or
why you can’t do a PT Test ???

Is it Due to Combat ???

Either way you will be Discharged long before Dec…
The CO’s way you end up with nothing…
The MEB way you at least get something…

Your Questions About Jobs That Involve Physical Fitness

William asks…

Summer job involving physical fitness?

Im a college student looking for a summer job. I’m into working out and I’d like to do something that involves physical labor. I had landscaping work in mind. I was wondering what other types of jobs I could do in order to improve my level of fitness and stay active?

admin answers:

Newspaper boy, Sweat shops and factories, Recycling, Mcdonalds (Do it in daytime. No other fast food restaurant get you running around like this place does),

Michael asks…

What kind of job involves lots of physical activity and manual labor?

I am looking for a part time job that is physically demanding and is a good workout. I am in school to be a fitness trainer, but I want to get a masters degree in kinesiology and work with ergonomics, or corporate fitness. I want to get my foot in the door by having a manual labor type of job or an entry level position, while training on the side.

John asks…

Do you get college credits for being a certified personal trainer?

I want to go to college to be a certified personal trainer.. the college I would be taking it at is a community college. It has a specific class just to teach people who want to be one… I don’t think it counted as credits so is it even worth taking? Is it even possible to get credits in something like that?.. If I did take it and it didn’t count as credits would it be of any use to me trying to get a job or say into a different college that involved physical fitness or something? Or do people usually just take that class then other classes that count as credits with it..? I’m confused o_O Sorry for the stupid questions, thanks :)
Well on the site it was under the “non credit classes” list so I was jw

admin answers:

Community colleges sometimes offer both college classes and vocational programs. This might be categorized under either depending on the level of the classes. My guess is that they are offering this through a vocational program. That means it counts towards a vocational certificate rather than a true college degree. The community college might still refer to the vocational certificate as a “degree” so be sure to ask it it will transfer to a 4 year college. If the answer is no, then it’s not really a college program. You might still want to get the vocational certificate “degree” though, if it will fulfill your career goals. You can get guidance on this from the community college’s advisers.

Susan asks…

Is horseback riding/working a good substitute for running?

I usually run 3 miles nearly everyday, but recently, I got a job at a stable. Once I start, I’ll be there most days of the week, working–cleaning, tacking up, grooming, etc.–so my job will involve physical work, and hopefully I’ll be able to hopefully ride most of those days as well. On the days I’m not working, I’ll still go out running for at least 45 min. But, if I stop running on the days I work, am I risking gaining weight/losing the fitness I’ve gained? Will working/riding be a proper substitute on the days I’m not running? I don’t want to gain any weight.
The thing is, my job is after school. So I will not have time to go running after my job, because I have other responsibilities (homework, etc.).

admin answers:

You can add your daily Job duties/horseback riding to your “overall” physical activities, but you should not substitute it for your actual exercising routine. I worked as Event Security for a season during Hot August Nights and I would walk at least 10 miles a day patrolling various areas. However, I would not count my essential Job duty as my daily exercise, I would add it to my overall activity level. I would still go for my routine exercise after work.

Your Questions About Healthy Food Questions For Kids

Michael asks…

This question is for all you kids who say your parents won’t let you be vegetarian (clarified)?

*If you don’t intend to read this carefully, please do not respond. Thanks.

I asked this earlier but many of you seemed to not understand the question, so I’ll try to clarify. I am not saying that a diet has to be vegetarian to be healthy. What I am saying is that if a family is buying the kinds of healthy groceries needed in anyone’s balanced diet, a child in that home being a vegetarian should not have great difficulty finding things to eat. They may have to cook their own entree, or buy their own veggie burgers/substitutes should they want those items. But if the family’s groceries and meals are following the basic food pyramid guidelines, there should be plenty of food in the home for a vegetarian child to have an adequate diet without making any drastic changes.

I am asking this because it seems that kids who say their parents won’t let them be vegetarian always say that their parents think it will be a great imposition on the family. I am saying that if the parents were buying a variety of healthy foods in the first place that would not be an issue. I am saying that parents should have in their home enough to give their children enough servings from all the food groups each day. Not providing healthy food for your child IS child neglect. I am NOT saying that not making your child a vegetarian is child neglect. If parents cannot afford nutrition for their children, it is their responsibility to seek assistance, by applying for food stamps and find resources to help them plan a healthy diet and learn to buy healthy groceries within their budget.

Now, this is my original question. (Food suggestions below are merely suggestions on how a vegetarian child could find meals using the groceries that should be in their omnivore home already, I am NOT saying any of these foods are specifically required, ok?):

I was wondering if you could tell me a little about what your family eats and what they buy for groceries. It seems to me that if your family is eating healthy it would not be hard for you to be a healthy vegetarian on the groceries they buy, maybe with the addition of some veggie burgers/specialty products you buy for yourself.

After all, protein is only 2 (maybe 3 if you’re eating only plant protein) servings per day. Your families should be providing you with at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables and 4-6 servings of healthy whole grains. Plus they should have things like peanut butter, beans and eggs around even if you might have to make them yourself on the side if your family is having a meat entree.

Remember, not providing healthy nutrition can be considered child neglect. If you are a minor and your family is not giving you the adequate nutrition you need, speak to your school counselor and see if you can all work on renovating your family’s diet and working your vegetarian lifestyle into it.

—————–

Again, to summarize: I AM saying that a family who buys healthy food should have enough variety of foods in the home that their child could build their own vegetarian meals without too much trouble. A family who stocks their kitchen with just meat and junk food cannot possibly be eating healthy in the first place. I think a family who doesn’t know how to eat properly should receive help, not because they are bad people, but because they need to learn how to make a healthy change. The child could ask his/her school counselor for help with this. IF the child also desires to be a vegetarian, the family could work on incorporating that child’s desired lifestyle into their meal plans.

I hope I made that clear enough this time. Of course, it would help if people actually read questions before spouting off. I apologize to those of you who had good answers the last time I asked this – I hope you won’t mind contributing again?

admin answers:

I think that one of the problems (It was for me anyhow) is regardless of if parents have the right food available or not, is whether the parent is allowing their child to do what THEY want as apposed to what is being inflicted on them.

I grew up with a very healthy omnivore diet – so cutting out meat would have been easy in theory but my parents just wouldn’t allow it – and when you are 8 or 9 you aren’t in a position to go making your own food and in my experience, even if you were, you’d probably be thrown out of the kitchen.

I actually talked to one of my science teachers at school about becoming vegetarian very early on, and He told me to not do it until I was old enough to do it by myself, and also once I was old enough to not still be developing. The logic makes sense kind of but the frustration of knowing what you want and having to wait for what can be an eternity is what brings a lot of those kids here to look for an alternative way out.

Secondly, a parent won’t always change their view in light of information such as that just provided by yourself. The stigma attached to vegetarian food makes even making the first step difficult sometimes – so a lot of the kids that come here saying ‘my parents wont let me be vegetarian’ are having a problem just convincing their parents to give it a go – whether they can do it healthily or not is a whole other ball game.

Getting a whole family to receive nutritional help could well be the way to go, but it isn’t always feasible in reality – if I told my family that, they would have laughed in my face

I’m sorry if I have misunderstood what you have written! You made some excellent points btw

Another cat food question!?

I have four cats, and as a lot of us know, can be a hassle when it comes to choosing foods. I took them off Science Diet (bad food) and tried Wellness (they didn’t like dry, but they love Wellness canned so that’s what they eat for wet food) Felidae, Evo…and can’t remember each one. As soon as they tasted Natural Balance Reduced Calorie Dry food they ALL love it! A lot of people on here know the good and bad when it comes to cat foods and the brands so just want to know if this a healthy food to feed my kids? Or is it too good to be true ??? (since this rarely happens) Thanks!

admin answers:

I agree with J.C. Natural Balance is way better than Purina, Hill’s or Iams. But the Reduced Calorie isn’t their best quality food. If the canned Wellness is their main food, and the dry NB Reduced Calorie food is the smaller part of their diet, it should not be a problem. But if they are mostly eating this dry food and you give them canned just for a treat, then it is more important to have a better quality food.

The best guidance I can give you is to learn how to read ingredients labels, so you can choose the best of what is available in your area. Here is a website that can help you do that: http://www.catfoodguide.com/ It not only teaches you how to read cat food labels, but also gives reviews of some brands. The person who made that website is not allied with any pet food manufacturer – she in fact feeds her pets mostly homemade food. So she does not have a vested interest in steering you to any particular brand, other than to educate and improve lives for cats. The short version is this. The better foods have specific muscle meats (rather than by-products or meat meals) in the first couple of ingredients. Any grains or other starches are much further down the list – the lower, the better. Avoid by-products altogether. Many cats do not tolerate corn or wheat, so you may wish to avoid those as well. It is unlikely that you will find the better cat foods at Walmart, or at your local grocery store. And yes, you may find yourself standing around in a pet store, reading labels for a long time – I do it myself, whenever I consider a new brand.

Jenny asks…

Kids and healthy eating? Whats your opinion, what do you do?

I have a 7 year old girl and an 9 year old boy, our family has always ate fairly healthy, we always have whole grain breads, pastas and cereals, we try and get the children to have healthy snacks, fruit, veggies, crackers cheese, but we do also have some candies, chips, and oreo cookies etc for the kids to have for snacks. We pack their lunch for school so we know they’re having good food for lunch and not burgeres or pizza at school, lunch usually includes and sandwhich or wrap, some nuts and dried fruitor fresh fruit, and then a candy or pack of chips,

We always sit down at the dining table for a meal the children always have the same meal as us,

But I’ve found, most my childrens friends eat all junk food, my son tells me that his friends don’t sit round the table with there family but eat in front of the TV, I dont want to criticize others parenting, but i personally think dinner time is the best time to talk and spend time as a family, and I want to start my children off eating all kinds of food, not just pizza, chicken nuggets, burgers etc, like I see a lot of my kids friends…

Anyways, my question is, whats your food routine with your children?
Do they eat at the dinner table and have the same food as mom/dad?
Do you feed them ‘real’ food, or do they eat a lot of junk?
If you don’t have children what would you do?
Quix.. Thats a good point about soda, we usually keep sprite in the house and have lots of flavored water and juice, on the weekends we often make a jug of smoothie for them to drink throughout the week, I find that agreat way to cram them full of fruit and veggies,

My friend freezes fresh fruit and juice into ice lolly shapes too, I havn’t given this a go yet, but I bet they’d enjoy it!
Belly, you’re lucky to have the time to grow all your own foods, i have some fresh herbs that i grow, but id love to grow tomatoes etc :) x

admin answers:

While my son just turned 5 months old and isn’t on solid food yet, he still sits at the dinner table with my husband, my daughter (age 6) and myself. My daughter eats what my husband and I eat, no exceptions. She isn’t allowed to have any junk food unless it’s a special occasion like a birthday or a holiday. For dinner, we typically serve a veggie, a starch, and a meat with water, juice or milk. We also have a no fried foods policy in our home, so she’s never had french fries or chicken strips or the like. She’s never had fast food or soda, and she’s only had candy a few times.

A lot of the veggies we serve we grow ourselves. My daughter enjoys spending time outside gardening with me or my husband, and I think home-grown food tastes a lot better than what we can buy at the store. We also keep chickens and have fresh eggs daily.

Gracie’s snacks usually include celery with cream cheese or peanut butter, or carrots and a little ranch, or a fruit salad or something like that. She absolutely loves fruit, and her favorite foods are strawberries and bananas.

I agree with you that dinner time is a time for a family to talk and spend time together. Dinner time, for us, is a time to learn more about each other, and to share stories about how school or work went. I love hearing my daughter talk about school or dance class or her theatre group because she’s so passionate when she does, and dinner time is a time to share things like that.

Her lunch at school usually includes a chicken salad or a sandwich of some sort on whole wheat bread, some kind of veggie (usually carrots, because those are her favorite), a fruit salad, a carton of whole milk and a bottle of water.

Help with lesson plan: what are some good questions to ask pre-k kids about nutrition?

I am doing a lesson plan tomorrow for my internship at a preschool on nutrition. I am bringing in examples of healthy and non healthy foods and they are supposed to be able to separate the two into their respective groups.

I have to start off the lesson by asking them questions about what they know about nutrition. I have NEVER worked with pre-k aged kids before so honestly, I don’t really know what kinds of questions to ask or what could be appropriate. Like what would they understand at that age…

Thanks so much!!

admin answers:

Start with asking them:
What do you think a healthy meal is?
Then you could ask:
What is not a healthy meal?
And….
What are some different foods that keep us healthy?
What are some different foods that won’t keep up healthy?

Sandra asks…

So making good choices for your kids is bad and making bad choices is good?

This is what I am gathering since it seems that if you are a parent who makes factual good choices you get thumbs down and if you are a parent who says awww so what if it’s bad for them it’s ok then you get thumbs up.

I posted about how I grew up with parents who smoked and that I think it’s selfish because I had chronic bronchitis growing up. I can’t see why anyone would smoke around their kids. So I get thumbs down. Well it’s a mater of fact that second hand smoke is bad so I guess it’s good to make a bad choice and smoke around your kids.

Then a question about fast food twice a week for a 19 month old. I post a sincere post about the health risks and mention that we rarely do fast food and that I think it’s important to set healthy food habits at a young age and suggest healthier choices at the fast food place and get two thumbs down while people who said it’s fine to eat this way got thumbs up. It’s a known fact this food is not healthy and is bad for you. I didn’t thumb anyone down for saying they choose it. If you choose it fine but why thumbs down people for making healthy choices for their kids?

This isn’t about thumbs up or down. It’s about why are people against making healthy choices and for making choices that are factually not the best? I’m talking about issues where something is a known fact like how second hand smoke has been proven to be bad for you etc…I’m not talking about things that are a matter of opinion.

Is it just that they know deep down they are not doing the right things and so it makes them feel better to thumb down someone who is? Or do they really think I am in the wrong for not wanting smoke around my children and for feeding them healthy food?
Jane Doe: so because I try to make healthy choices for my child I am “your greatness”, why are you so mad at me for making healthy choices for my kids? I was not rude to you in my answer to your fast food question. I didn’t put you down for your choice or make it a big deal I just gave my opinion in a nice way and I thought opinions were what you wanted. Oh wait…you just wanted to hear people who would say iot was fine to give your 19 month old soda and fries twice a week and didn’t want to hear anything else is that it?
Bela like I said it’;s not about thumbs, it;s just the thumbs that made me wonder why are people so against making good choices?
How did I go on and on about anything? I simply answered her question just like everyone else it just didn’t match what she wanted to hear.
My kids eat junk food now and then I never acted like we were health nuts. I just said for a child that age….
This isn’t just about the junk food question. Ialso got thumbed down for being against smoking around children. It seems like a pattern around here.
awkwardly balanced, I don’t “control” their eating. Not sure where you got that idea. I teach them to make good healthy choices and not to over do junk food. The question I answered was about a toddler.
oh really Jane Doe? That’s why you got in such a tizzy over some of the answers LOL how about you go fold that laundry and stuff more pop down your baby’s throat I’m sure he’ll thank you some day.
hillbilly lily, just goes to show how much you know about me. I am not a stay home mom, so see what happens when you read into things too much and assume? it makes and A$$ out of you! And she didn’t just ask if it causes those things her actually questions said “is there anything wrong with giving a 19 month old coke and fast food twice a week” QUOTE

admin answers:

Honestly, I didn’t see your answer till just now – so even though my answer was different than yours- I hope u dint think I thumbed you down.

I agree that children should eat mostly (95% healthy foods). I’m there with you. I’m a health nazi. I don’t even think cooked veggies have a great health value. I’m a vegetarian, too- so there are many nights when I only serve veggies and fruits and a bean dish.

Thing is- I don’t think it is a BAD parenting choice for someone to give their child an occasional treat, on top of a 95-98% fully health filled diet and active lifestyle.
It’s Okay to agree to disagree. I think some people are very misinformed about true health/ diet risks (not saying YOU are.. But some people very clearly are).

Plus- it’s y!a. I mean.. What can you expect?

Your Questions About New Army Pt Test

Helen asks…

For the new Army pt test, I understand we are running 1.5 miles but what is the required run time?

admin answers:

The Army Times from the last week of July had a whole article about the new test. I am sure you can find that online.

Ken asks…

What do you think of the new Army PT test?

Sit-ups don’t make a soldier, the Army has decided. So its 30-year-old fitness requirements are getting a battlefield-inspired makeover.

Soon every soldier will have to run on a balance beam with two 30-pound canisters of ammunition, drag a sled weighted with 180 pounds of sandbags and vault over obstacles while carrying a rifle. Those were just some of the tests the Army unveiled Tuesday as it moves toward making its physical training look more like combat.

Right now soldiers have to complete sit-ups, push-ups and a two-mile run twice a year within times that vary by age and gender. Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling, the general in charge of the Army‘s initial military training, said he has been working to change that test for years.

Hertling said the current test “does not adequately measure components of strength, endurance, or mobility,” or predict how well a soldier would do under fire.

A new annual “combat readiness” test includes running 400 meters — about a quarter of a mile — with a rifle, moving through an obstacle course in full combat gear, and crawling and vaulting over obstacles while aiming a rifle. Soldiers also will have to run on a balance beam while carrying 30-pound ammo boxes and do an agility sprint around a course field of cones.

admin answers:

Officers that need or want great bullets on their OER’s always come up with GFI’s. Don’t know what a GFI is ask one of your Army buddies since I can’t mention all of it in this forum. Anyway years ago until they changed to the two mile run etc. Etc. The PT test consisted of a run but there were pullups and you had to run through this little chicane and jump over a ditch and do this three times I guess without twisting an ankle but that was the Vietnam and Post Vietnam PT test. Then some other Staff officer came along and said, wait, Vietnam was over about eight years ago, I know, lets just do this really hard PT test with running, pushups and situps and then they implemented that because were training for the next war, not the last. Anyway, when the TMC’s report that they have to beef up personnel anytime a unit is conducting that type of APFT since we really don’t need twisted ankles, broken necks or legs and such until we actually get to a combat zone, I think someone is going to figure out that LTG Hertlings GFI may not have been such a great one after all.

Nancy asks…

Whats the New Army PT test like?

admin answers:

I do not know but I do know it was released the 8 active duty posts nation wide to come up with standards so for the next 6 months they will test and get a minimum, maximum standard. Look at it this way it isn’t 2 miles anymore which too me sucked, its only 1 min of push ups which is about what everyone did anyways, the rower ehhh we will see about the outcome of that the standing long jump REALLY? Why is this there? And 60 yard shuttle run ehh we shall see only time will tell. If you want a better answer find an active duty soldier around the US on one of those bases and ask him. The CFT/CRT is totally different consisting of 400m run with “full battle rattle”/ weapon any they have a diagram online so go google that and see for yourself.

Laura asks…

The new Army PT Test?

Has anyone seen this? What are your thoughts?
I believe this is better than the repetitive 2 minute pushup/situp and 2 mile run seeing as it doesn’t apply too much.

admin answers:

I’ve been in the Army for a while now and have worked in fitness and rehab for most of that time. The current Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) does fall short of accurately measuring a Soldiers fitness level.
This new test, while only in the testing phase, looks like over kill. Five running events. Shuttle, sprint through cones, 1.5 miles run, running across a balance beam carrying weight and a 400 meter run and obstacle course while aiming a weapon, (can’t imagine how they are going to grade aiming). Then do the long jump (I did soooo many of those in Iraq and Afghanistan). Then buddy drag through an obstacle course. 7 mostly lower extremity test? Really? On the same day?
So, units will have to build 2 obstacle courses? At what cost?
Doing that many lower extremity test the same day, not to mention training for them, is asking for an increase in lower extremity injuries. Lower extremity injuries already leads the way in area injured and produces the highest number of Soldiers being put out of the Army. Now you want to increase that?

William asks…

Opinions on the New US Army PT Test?

As I am sure everyone is aware of it and what the new five events will be. Is anyone here training for it and if so could you please share your workout here such as what exercises re you doing? How many days a week are you working out and doing them? How many sets? How many reps? How long to rest inbetween each set? Thanks

admin answers:

This was a waste of money and time. SMA Chandler already stated the 2 new events (long jump and shuttle run) will be pass-fail events since he’s not so sure they truly measure a Soldiers fitness. The rowers are just another way to do situps, and feels better on my aging back.

I personally believe the Army will continue to change their PT requirements, so I just ensure I am fit and that way I know I can excel in any test the Army throws at me. I PT on my own hours and I do “Insanity” workouts, run, bike and hike. I mean wasn’t that the reason Army leaders wanted to restructure the Army physical fitness test? To ensure Soldiers are fit for combat tasks and stop training for the PT tests?

If you are forced to do morning PT, then make sure you incorporate the shuttle runs into your training. Strong legs will allow for good long jumps, so make sure you are doing squats, lunges, etc. Overall, keep the tempo in your PT sessions high meaning little to no breaks between exercises to keep the cardio up. That’s the biggest problem with unit PT — too slow tempos between exercises and relying on long grueling runs at someone elses pace to keep you “fit.”

Your Questions About Healthy Fattening Foods To Gain Weight

Richard asks…

I’m way under weight and can’t gain it back. HELP!!!?

I’m a 24 year old female 5′ 4″ and I weigh 95 lbs. My goal weight is about 110-115 lbs. I’ve tried so hard to gain weight. I’ll get up to like 98 lbs and then all of a sudden I’m back down to 93-95 lbs. I try to eat more fattening foods but I’m just naturally drawn to healthier foods. I prefer grilled chicken over a hamburger. I don’t care for red meats or fried foods. On top of that I have bad Acid Reflux so I have to watch what I eat anyway. I’m struggling here and don’t know what to do. My doctor told me peanut butter and apple sauce but that’s how I found out that I’m allergic to peanut butter. What are some good ways to gain healthy weight.

admin answers:

Urrgghh I’m in the same boat as you brother. I’m 6’1” and 150 pounds, I was 6’1” and 130 pounds 5 months ago. So I killed myself to gain weight, eating was just my ultimate goal.. It’s all about your mindset really, if you actually want to gain weight you have to be passionate about it. Drinking milk has helped me, also eating lots of nuts (not peanuts) such as avocados and almonds as snacks, just buy a bag and have it laying around and even if you aren’t hungry, eat them because you are straight up gaining weight from those things (90% calories from fat). It’s a slow and painful process tho, I work out at the gym a good bit, perhaps that puts on muscle which you can’t just lose in a day, your weight won’t fluctuate as much. Also I was told to eat 5 -6 meals a day (but smaller meals) I haven’t the time for that little game, but perhaps you do? Do not worry about eating healthy, just worry about eating period, like a hamburger may be nasty, but its good protein.

Michael asks…

55 kgs and cant seem to gain any more weight. help?

im 18, 6’1 and 55 kgs. any suggestions on healthy but fattening foods and tips on lifting weights? i have 3 months till college and i wanted to put on some weight, not really all that concerned with getting jacked as all hell, but just to put on some muscle.

Sandy asks…

how to gain weight in a healthy manner?

Ok I’m 13 (14 soon) I’m around 5 feet and 3 inches. And I weigh 85 pounds. Everyone who first meets me says “Girl, do you eat?” I actually eat A TON! All my friends say I eat more than a full-grown man, but I never gain the weight. I have a fast metabolism and that runs in the family (my mom was the same way) I eat pretty healthy, but I also eat lots of fattening foods. Like right now I’m eating an ice-cream sundae =) I maintain a healthy life, I play a sport every season and so forth. But yet, I’m still 20 pounds lighter than my twin sister! My sister is the same weight as practically all the girls in my grade. I’ve tried drinking “Ensure” but it tasted horrid so I stopped. My mom sometimes threatens to make me drink “PediaSure” the drink that little kids have to gain weight and add nutrition! I have no Desire to drink that so please help! And I’m not interested in stuffing my face with junk all day, if that was what you had in mind! Because that’s not healthy at all!
Thanks =)
-Ami
one of the reasons I wanted to post this question was that tight jeans are in style and like none of my jeans are tight on me! My fave pair of jeans are 14 slims and they’re barely tight on me. Of course they’re like skin-tight on my sister =( oh and the size lower than 14′s are 12′s (In girls) but 12′s are too small length wise

admin answers:

Double up on your protein and start lifting weights, not heavy weights keep them light, you don’t want to bulk up but you want to tone what you already have. And if your that worried about your weight go see a nutritionist. Your only 5’3 you may go through a growth spurt soon. If that’s the case you have nothing to worry about.

Mark asks…

I am way to skinny…. why am i losing weight and how can i gain it by eating healthy….?

all i eat is fast food. but I’m losing weight. we never have groceries in the house so I can’t eat healthy. why am i losing weight? i thought fast food was supposed to be fattening. and how can i start eating healthier and gain my weight back with no groceries ever in the house?

admin answers:

My advice would be that you should check your daily routine first. You should check your BMR and if it shows that you are under weight then its a worry else its fine no need to worry as long as you are having a good health.
If this is not the case then your metabolism can be the reason behind you not gaining any weight. The best methods to gain weight are the natural ones, taking help of drugs to gain weight is very bad idea for your health. Take proper sleep atleast 8-9 hours, include fat in your diet.

Mandy asks…

Healthy Ways For Child To Gain Weight?

My little boy eats a very healthy diet he gravitates toward all those great foods you want your kids to eat such as veggies and fruit and he rarely eats meat or fattening things. However I am afraid he’s too thin and I’d like to see more weight on him.
He eats pasta and other carbs and actually quite a lot of bread but that doesn’t have any effect on his weight, and he also drinks several glasses of whole milk every day.
Can you suggest some foods that are good for him but will help him gain some weight?
He’s 8yrs old and very active.
esmerelda-his doc said he’s fine, my concern has grown since my son spent a few weeks with his Grandma who insists he needs fattening up!
Sandy-I had thought about ensure but I couldn’t see anything on the can about it being suitable for children?

admin answers:

Hi Petra:

Congratulations on the great habits your child has! I think exactly like you about what kids should eat. Anyways, my kids are both really really thin, but when younger they were trully skinny. Besides giving them whole milk (not whole, some milk they sell here especially made for kids, with vitamins and minerals), I give them ice cream. This loads them with calcium but also with some body fat that they need anyways. Another great food is peanut butter, it is loades with protein and calories. I also put butter in their sandwiches, it gives them some protein. After I began doing that, my kids put on some weight, but more than that, they gained height. They are still thin, but now they are not underweight.

Your Questions About Most Fattening Everyday Foods

Daniel asks…

What are the most fattening and low-fat everyday foods?

admin answers:

Well the most calorie dense foods you can find are fresh vegetables. They are low in calories, high in vitamins, and high in micronutrients.

The highest fat foods would be those with saturated fat. Basically any fatty meat you see, avoid.

admin answers:

Here’s a website with tips to help you.

I don’t know the menus available to you, but in general avoid anything fried, choose grilled meats and avoid the sauce (ketchup and plain mustard are okay, in moderation). Avoid sugary soft drinks; water is best, even better than diet drinks. Some studies say diet drinks might cause you to crave more sugar (the calorie-laden kind).

Also, make sure you get more exercise. Can you walk or bike to work? Go for a walk on your break.

The general rule: eat less, move more.

Donna asks…

Can I lose weight in my thighs?

Carol asks…

why are asians more prone to diabetes?

I mean, most asian eat healthy. They don’t eat junkies. So whyyy? :(

I know, diabetes is not a “fat-people-diesease” but eating too much sweet stuff and fattening food can higher the risk of getting diabetes.

Most americans (not all) eat a lot of junkies, almost everyday. They sort of … weight heavier than asian (not to sound insulting), so why are asian still more prone to diabetes.

I’m sorry if i insulted anyone :( Just curious … Sorrry !

admin answers:

It’s called genetic predisposition.

Asians are at high risk of getting Type 2 diabetes due to genetic predisposition. They also get Type 2 diabetes at a lower body weight than white people. Lots of Asian Type 2 diabetics are in fact very thin.

Diabetes is not caused by eating too much sweet stuff or fattening food. That is a myth. It is mostly genetic.

On the flip side, Asians have an extremely low risk of getting Type 1 diabetes.

i really need some advice.so i’m about 110 , i have been doing 100 sit ups everyday. No Running. recently i just stopped doing sit ups everyday and now i do 30 mins on the eliptical 4 days a week and then i do 100 situps 4 days a week too.My stomach isnt really bad.I have no love handles.I just want to get a little more toned.I do not diet at all!! i probally only eat 3 times a day.The most fattening thing ill eat is crispy chicken strips from jack in the box and fries(But i dont eat fast food everyday) and the rest of the day ill have little stuff. Now should i diet.or can someone give me a work out plan and tell me how much i have to workout if i dont diet.please help me?

admin answers:

Hi Emily,

You don’t HAVE to diet in order to lose weight, but dieting is a good complement to any workout program.

However, as you I don’t like the whole diet stuff too much, but it seems you are eating healthy enough. What I do though is eat 6 times per day, smaller meals instead of 3 larger ones.

This will help your metabolism a lot as your stomach won’t shut down between each meal but instead run more constantly.

What you could do inbetween your current meals are add 3 healthy snacks (I often use fruit, but try to add some calories), this should do wonders and be all the dieting you’ll need.

Now, when it comes to workout, its obviously dependant on what you are after. As for toning, I would do some light workout sessions, and complement them with 2-4 30-60min walks per week. And/or perhaps some swimming if you have access to a pool.

Hope that helps a bit

home health aids for children (3rd try)?

don’t answer specifically about the family i am thinking about–i cannot give many details–so you have no way of determining if this particualr family is already getting all the services they are entitled too

are children with minimal physical ability (in general-not necessarily these children) possibly eligible for PCAs/home health aides..or is this never/almost never a possibility…….

if this is a possible service–the parent will contact the appropriate people and apply to see if they are actually eligible..they have previously not even considered it because of the childrens complicated needs–and not being ablt to trust a home health aid agency to provide the right person–but since there is now personal choice in caregivers–they would consider it–

these children would definately be eligible for full time PCAs/home health aides as adults–

but i’m guessing there is different criteria for children who have a parental caretaker–no matter how much of a physical strain it is–
especially when there is 1 caretaker and 2 children in need
i was a child care provider for families that just needed ‘a higher level of care’

this particular family needs much more than that….
under normal circumstances this wouldn’t be an issue–but due to the extreme financial burden of the kids needs that are not reimbursed–having the caretaker on a daily basis is a financial burden….for instance as the children get bigger–it will be impossible to take care of them in the house–so they are making renovations—they do have a grant to cover some it it–but they must pay much of the cost themselves……
they pay a lot out of pocket (although eligible for medicaid-have turned it down as they do have private insurance)–many of their ‘little’ extra expenses add up–quickly–since there are so many of them….
so–they aren’t looking for handouts–just benefits they may be eligible for–that will allow them to keep their money to pay for the many expenses that have no benefits
the problem is–the parents don’t have time to be contacting anyone–unless something is a possibility–they are constantly contacting schools, doctors, insurance, government agencies for things they are already involved with—and they never get to the end of that ‘things to do list’

especially since it is so hard to get a straight answer from most government/insurance/other companies
if they were to contact someone directly–it would be the insurance provider/medicaid–they just want to know if they should bother
i’m trying to get preliminary info before entering the insurance circus
chili-if you had answered the question in the first place–i wouldn’t have reasked in a different way to get people to understand-

you said CHILD CARE is not provided by medicaid the last time i asked

but this is about HOME HEALTH SERVICES..
i onlyy reasked–because obviously i didn’t make myslef clear–as teh answers I were given did not match the intended question…..
so a family with a 200 pound 16 year old with no communication, minimal use of limbs, in diapers….would be expected to provide all the care for that child?
the family IS paying for PCA type care now–the question is are they eligible for reimbursemnet/insurance coverage..

children who are on respirators do get actual home nursing care (from an RN)–i know children like this–the nurse even rides the school bus with them..

school is covered–the district has been great–bringing in addition resources since no one school could provide everything

admin answers:

It depends on where you are and whether you have the money to pay for PCA. I don’t know much about Medicaid as I don’t live in America but they may want to look at the eligibility criteria for it to see if they qualify without insurance or look at whether they can get insurance for the family with a child with a preexisting condition. It’ll probably be hard given the child’s preexisting condition (this will probably be pretty hard.)

There may be some agencies who can provide people which is cheaper than the rest.

The child you mention is definitely eligible for assistance in school as it sounds like he would need assistance to do most of the activities required in a school even in a special ed class.

As for in the home I’m not sure. If he requires active night care (the carer has to stay awake to see to his needs while he is asleep – such as turning him in bed, attending to his equipment such as respirator, etc) then I’d say that he probably would be eligible for care at least for the night time.

Carol asks…

Is this a good example of why fathers should not trust the mother who says just pay the child support to me?

Filing for child support?
When I had my daughter I received medical help from the State of Nebraska. When I filled out the form for medical aid I lied and said that I did not know who my daughters father was. I now want to file for child support. Does anyone know what legal ramifications I might receive from Health and Human Services for falisfying information regarding my daughters paternity?

When these cases happen, when the mother finally gets caught, it is the father who gets punished by being ordered to repay the child support for the same time period.

Why do fathers have to pay back Welfare when the mothers are the ones that cheated?

admin answers:

The argument (if it can be called that) is the old “it’s what’s in the best interest of the child”.

A good example of why men should not trust a woman who says just pay the child support to me is a study conducted by the American Association of Blood banks found that 30% of samples tested revealed that the man who had been told he was the father was not in fact the father.

Women try and justify paternity fraud (fraud is a crime) by attempting to sanctify the crime by citing the supposedly benevolent use of the proceeds from the crime, enter the “it’s in the best interest of the child”. By that rationale a dope dealer should be able to be seen as benevolent because the proceeds from his heroin trafficking were used “for the best interest of his children”.

I’ve yet to hear an explanation on how it is “in the best interest of a child” to not know who their real parents are for emotional as well as medical reasons.

Sandra asks…

If we Must Do Something About Healthcare — Why Not Good Policy?

Good policy does no harm. Takes nothing from anybody. Just adds. It makes things better — let’s have some examples:

1. Tort reform — Keep it simple — OK for regular medicine damages are capped at 3X out of poclets. For emergency medicine, damages are capped a just out of pockets and the Good Samaritan Rule is written into Federal Statute and enforced strongly.

This policy takes the “Alien-Like” Monster of the “legal profession” off the back of the medical profession. Doctors do not need to order unecessary tests just to practice “defensive medicine.

This policy must be combined with a very strong policy on the credentials and qualifications of doctors. Board Certified doctors must be re-tested or re-examined every five years, and every year after they pass age 65. They must be supervised with great care, and regulated by boards of supervising physicians. If a doctor starts to go incompetent he can be regulated back into his zone of competence so he does no harm. Quacks dispense band-aids. Geniuses do the brain surgury.

2. Federal Paupers Primary Care Clinics — the shortest distance between two points is an authentic desire to get it done. Euclid knew this, I don’t think he put it in The Elements though, but I’m telling it to you now. These clinics could be staffed mostly by local doctors, but they would be supervised by doctors of the National Public Health Service. They would be located within a few feet of hospital emergency rooms where poor people go when they feel they need care. All cases triaged out to the Federal Paupers clinic by the ER staff at the hospital would result in 92.5% savings. 90% of the cases can be triaged out –they are not true emergency cases. The Paupers Clinics would operate 24/7 and they would be combined with Pauper’s Pharmacies so it’s one stop shopping for Pauper’s Healthcare.

These clinics would be 100% free of Alien-Like legal menace due to sovereign immunity. They can’t be sued.

This policy must be combined with a very high level of supervisory vigilance to assure that the quality of care is at least very good, and hopefully excellent at these clinics. This means doctors are re-tested annually, no old doctors, no foreign educated doctors unless they are indispensable, highly experienced, and highly Board Certified. Very close supervision of all drugs dispensed, in real time, by computer monitoring of the drug storage area. Excellent physical security.

These two policy options are just a start. I can think of many other possibilities, for a New Healthcare Bill, for the new Congress and 1/3rd of the Senate that will be seated in 2011.

Obamacare needs to be gonged off the stage. Let’s get on to some more productive business in the Congress.

This business of raiding the Medicare Trust Fund for $400 Billion is just never going to happen, and neither are the Public Option ideas. Without those core elements Obamacare is just piffle and wind, it can go in the oubliette with no loss of data. Let’s get on to something else.
For Revoluti:

Paupers clinics are Constitutional as long as all paupers are equally covered. The Constitution does not require that all persons at all times be treated equally. What it requires is that “similarly situated” persons be treated equally.

Postjudice is not prejudice. It’s ok to make careful observations and then make rational assessments. That’s what reasonable people do. If I exclude old doctors and foreign doctors from service at the Federal pauper’s clinics, I have very good reasons for doing so. It may be hard for you to imagine that it could be anything but raw prejudice. And yet, there are more things in heaven and earth that are compassed in your philosophy. Honi soi Qui Mal Y Pense. Shame on you for calling me prejudiced on account of my prudent and careful formulation of policy. I’ve travelled the world, and lived in many countries. What do you know in your 18 years of life? To call the names that your teachers put in your mouth — play the prejudice card

admin answers:

I prefer this policy instead: I pay for my health care, you pay for yours. This makes everyone responsible for themselves and their actions. Fat people, drunks, junkies, tramps, smokers and baby factories would all be held responsible for their choices. If you can’t pay the bill up front, make payment arrangements.

Given the performance of the federal government, I cannot trust it with something as important as my health care. You can’t name a single thing the federal government has ever taken over from the private sector that was run nearly as effectively, efficiently or economically. The federal government has no incentive to be efficient or productive – or even keep its promises.

There is NOTHING in the Constitution of the United States that grants the federal government any authority to interfere in health care. In fact, the Tenth Amendment prohibits the interference.

There is NO PUBLIC OPTION so long as it does not allow anyone to opt out of paying for the fiasco to begin with.

admin answers:

You must step into the shoes of the “school administrator” who interacts at all levels – at all points in the chain of command.
Who will you be interacting with?
Starting with: Students – Parents – Teachers – Cafeteria workers – Athletic coaches, School Nurses and School District employees who purchase and deliver cafeteria supplies.
First of all you’ll need a Licensed Dietitian who will work out the menus and what to change.
Then you’ll compose a letter to the Parents telling them that the school will be changing the menus and offering more low calorie selections to the students.
Then you’ll compose a bulletin to the Facility to alert them to the new healthier approach to the problem of obesity in your school (district)
Then you’ll have the Art department and the whole school come up with ideas on new posters to make the students aware of the health issues of being obese.
And then you have PTA meetings to iron out any problems!
And the school will try to find ways to provide more exercise periods for the students to help them burn off the excess calories.

Happiness is a deeply personal thing which will mean different things to different people.

You could look at different religions and belief systems, most of which help people work on some form of search for happiness in the next world if not this. The Dalai Lama has written books about how to achieve happiness – you might want to check out his website:http://www.dalailama.com/.

————————-
Obesity affecting the child‘s academic performance due to the constant stress of their self-image.

Sub-topic #2
————————
The physical health concerns of children are not only getting worse, but they’re continuing to increase as the numbers of obesity statistics are accumulating.

Sub-topic #3
————————-
A child‘s psychosocial outcome can be affected based on the simple fact of having to deal with not obtaining acceptance within social groups.

Thank you very much

All of your help would be GREATLY appreciated.

admin answers:

I don’t think i am answering your question right but here it goes:

#1: A child’s academic performance is affected when they believe they have a bad self image. Why? Well simply because it’s stresses them out! Imagine yourself at age 12 weighing 156 pounds doing class work. You feel constantly hungry, but know you shouldn’t eat anything since you need to get your classwork done. You are constantly focusing on eating and how it will affect your body if you have that fruit roll up. You don’t want to do your class work since you are stressing out over this little issue. Yeah, put yourself in that spot and I think you can see how a child’s academic performance is affected.
*Make sure to throw in some satistics like for example (I’m making this one up) 1 out of every 3 kids with low grades said that they were constantly stressed out about their self image during school.

#2: The physical health concerns of children are not only getting worse, but they’re continuing to increase as the numbers of obesity statistics are accumulating. No one wants to turn into a two-ton-tammy. Kids are becoming more aware of the obesity and so that applies pressure on them. They know they need to eat healthy, but how is that possible with all of the non-nutrious food on the market? How are they supposed to want to rather eat carrots than eating a peice of cake? If the food industry was to advertise eating healthy snacks rather than advertising cheetos or other unhealthy products, maybe kids would make correct choices.
*Add more satisics and facts to that.

#3: A child’s psychosocial outcome can be affected based on the simple fact of having to deal with not obtaining acceptance within social groups. Most of the time there is pressure on girls that they need to be like skinny models. If a child is obese, some children may reject them because they would be embarassed to be hanging around someone that kids these days refer to as “fat slobs”. Another reason is the fact that some kids might reject them because for some reason they think the obese kid has cooties. Whatever the case, obese kids get made fun and reject and it has a big impact on their psycological state and thoughts of selfworth.

I really do hope my writing helped you out even a little. I love writing essays (go ahead call me crazy) so hopefully this covered it for the most part. Good luck :)

Paul asks…

What do you think of this persuasive essay? (We are trying to make the reader feel guilty) I am 13, go easy!?

Ok here is the hypothetical situation: Our principle is worried about the students and their risk of obesity in our school, so he is thinking about requiring students to do physical fitness tests every year (I know we have to do presidential tests already, but as i said this is hypothetical!) However, he is unsure of weather he should do it or not. We are supposed to persuade him to do it or not to do it. I took the side of making him do it. In the opening paragraph, we are supposed to make him feel emotion. In this case, it is guilty. I am 13 so go easy on me. WARNING: It is long =]

Dear Principal (insert name here)

Everyday, many parents find out that their children are at risk of becoming obese, and the same could happen to the students of (insert school name here) What can I do about this issue, you ask? You need to require each student to participate in a physical fitness test. By doing this, you can lower the rate of obesity. You can also help teens get their aggression out in a good way and help parents save money. Did you know that the possibility of obesity in (insert school name here) is very high, and it is up to you to stop it? Being overweight could affect much more then physical appearance, you know. It is up to you to protect these kids from becoming obese. It is up to you weather or not students suffer various health conditions. Would you like students to suffer health conditions later in life?
One major reason we should have these physical fitness tests is because obesity is a huge issue. It can cause many problems such as diabetes and heart disease. Being overweight can also affect a person’s joints, breathing, sleep, mood, energy levels, and various other health concerns. So, being obese could impact a person’s entire quality of life (1). However, when teens start a daily exercise routine, they will be surprised on how much easier exercise gets throughout life, and how physically fit they become. If you require each student in (insert school name here) to do an exercise routine, you could lower the rate of obesity in (insert state here). Think about how many students get taught here in (insert school name here) every year! Imagine how many people could benefit from your physical fitness tests. Did you know that teens are more likely to do more exercise at home when they are required to do exercise at school? Think about how much of an impact you would be making on these students.
Another huge reason these physical fitness tests are a good idea is because teens tend to become very moody and angry, exercise is a healthy way to get their aggression out and cool down. Not only is it a great way to get their aggression out and cool down, but also a great way for them to have fun with their friends and stay out of trouble. For example, did you know teens are using drugs nowadays? Would you rather see students exercising and having a good time or using some rotten drugs?
The final reason these physical fitness tests are a good idea is because it is a great way for parents to save money. If you think that sounds crazy, think about it. How many bills do you think parents pay when their teen decides to stay at home watching television and eating potato chips? The television bill would go way up and so would the food bill. If the students decide to go outside and exercise, parents could easily savor money and spend it on things that could benefit the school. For example, with all that extra money, parents might be able to give a donation to the school or buy school supplies for their teen.
If you care about your students’ health, you will require each student to take a physical fitness test. You will be impacting students lives today, and their future lives as well. Remember, obesity affects their health very much. It can harm joints, breathing, heart, and more. Would you rather have students playing in the field or have them on the couch eating potato chips and watching some l horrible television show? The students’ health for their three years at (insert school name here) is up to you.

Sincerely,

(insert name here)

(1) http://kidshealth.org/teen/food_fitness/dieting/obesity.html.

P.S. it is in paragraphs, it just doesn’t show!
P.P.S. sorry about the whole (insert name here) thing… I am very protective!
